Dirty User Info... | Hey there fellow drummers! I had this brilliant idea of putting on a local only drum off. Basically what is involved is a bunch of local drummers competeing against each other to be judged who is the best in the city. There will be judges that have nothing to do with music whatsoever, to make everything fare. I guess what I am looking for is some feedback to see if there is anyone interested in competeing, or just general feedback on what you think of this idea! Thanks for your time Dirty - Sat, 13 Dec 2003 5:45pm
Zippgunn User Info... | This is a great idea... but only if they all play at the same time. - Sat, 13 Dec 2003 8:27pm

KnifeGhost User Info... | Why would you have judges that have nothing to do with music? That would be like me judging the Nobel Prize for synchronized swimming..... - Sat, 13 Dec 2003 11:56pm

Japanese Air Force User Info... | I'm morally opposed to "battle of the bands" and other competition involving finding out "who the best musician is". It's music. It's completely subjective. We've already seen that most people in here attribute technical chops or speed with "who's the best drummer". I play drums and while I can admire people who can play in 7/23 time and do quadruple 128th note paradiddles with their double kick while eating a sandwhich, I get bored as shit by that stuff in about 5 minutes. I perfer a drummer with feel and groove who can lay down a straight '2 and 4' and make it sit just right with the song. Something that makes your body move, without you even realizing it. Not as flashy, but it certainly requires talent. I'd be more interested in seeing a showcase of local drummers/whatevers, no competition, no "best of" prize, no bullshit, just a bunch of guys/girls showing people what they've decided to focus on for their instrument. Now that would be cool. ~JAF - Mon, 15 Dec 2003 12:24am

Kinda like only fat chicks saying beauty is on the inside. - Mon, 15 Dec 2003 3:16am

BBJones User Info... | Most professional, touring and studio drummers will say the same thing. The top qualities in drummers are feel and groove. Being able to play with a song, not wank out and show off. Taste is the hardest thing to "practice" and is more difficult to measure since it is completely subjective depending on the listener and the music. So if you want to see drummer's playing by themselves, you would only be looking at their soloing abilities and display of technical skill. While that certainly would be entertaining, it would by no means indicate who is "better" than anyone else. Every serious drummers has something they do well, whether it be they are super fast and tight, or they can hold down a solid groove that makes you say "greasy!", or perhaps more importantly they are dependable musicians. I only say all of this becuase I know I would lose :P So yeah, I'm like a fat chick... wanna roll me in flour? - Mon, 15 Dec 2003 9:22am
ROSS B AY User Info... | let me get this straight - YOU'RE saying drum solos aren't the best way to go? that's rich. - Mon, 15 Dec 2003 11:07am

stefano User Info... | Not to sound like a tree hugger but if we keep competing against each other the Victoria Island scene may never flourish. A showcase appeals more to me, rather than the "best of" angle. Although if you call the event a "BEAT OFF" then i'm there. -fat chick. - Sun, 28 Dec 2003 4:28pm
el fuckface-o User Info... | if it's you beating off other drummers you will definitely be there. everyone knows about the Dizzy boys and their nut cupping/ass patting ways. you're not so much a tree hugger as you are a pole hugger. - Sun, 28 Dec 2003 4:45pm
H User Info... | Hey, I was just kidding about the speed metal thing. It's the same with us bass players. I mean, look at Bill Dickens. He may be the fastest bassist to ever walk this earth but does he get all the session work? Oh wait, yes he does. Anyways, competition or not, this ultimately would be a showcase. Back in highschool my drummer and his best friend would play talent shows as a drumming duo. They actually managed to compose something simular to a song and it kicked fucking ass. Just give me date and place and i'll be first in line to see this. Oh yeah, and i think i know a couple drummers who should be into participating... - Sun, 28 Dec 2003 7:55pm
