Never, ever, ever, buy Gibraltar anything. They are useless, unreliable, cheap pieces of shit. I used to have a low-end Pearl double kick and it lasted me 2-3 years before it started going south on me. I've heard alot about Tama's Iron Cobra's and Axis pedals, but both brands are ridiculously expensive. I'm going to buy Pearl pedals when I buy new ones, I would say that they last the longest and are built in a sound, easy to fix manner. But if you have the cash, go for Axis. I beleive that they are the only rod-driven pedals out there. - Sat, 6 Dec 2003 7:23am

Drum workshop pedals work pretty good for me. Got mine (DW4000)second hand for under $300.00. I believe they range from $300.00 to &500.00 for brand new. - Sat, 6 Dec 2003 11:11am

Hey brad if your looking for sure speed it's AXIS. They are great if your using triggers cuze there light tapers. If your not in to triggers wich i know you not, then your looking for a little more of a hard hiter. The most fast hard hitting is the Cobra power glide. Not cheap though. If you want good gear you gota pay! - Sat, 6 Dec 2003 11:47am

Top speed is Axis longboards hands down. They are NOT light hitting pedals. That is a technique issue.

Cobras are alright, same kinda crap as DW's and the Pearls really. Any other top end model will give you the same results. It's more about what feels right for your technique.

Try pedals out for a month if you can before you buy them

Axis are worth the money if you want top speed.

I just happen to have a set of Iron Cobra power glides, 6 months old for just under $300. They are about $450 new.

I also have some older DW500's. Good for backup or if you aren't doing crazy speed stuff. Under $200, close to $500 new.

Axis longboards start around $675. - Sat, 6 Dec 2003 6:06pm

Axis are light hiters. I'll prove you wrong if you would like. - Sat, 6 Dec 2003 6:46pm

How would you prove me wrong? By playing them lightly?

I've got Axis, DW's and IC's. I know what they can all do. A person's technique has a lot to do with how hard you can hit with a set of pedals. It also depends how you set them up and any other modifications you make... like adding oak beaters.

You by no means NEED triggers to play fast with Axis pedals. But if you're going to be double bassing over 230bpm with any pedals, you will generally use triggers becuase it simply evens out the sound.

I just find all the pedals apart from Axis sluggish at the higher speeds... - Sat, 6 Dec 2003 7:39pm

As I suspected, metal musicianship has evolved into some twisted sort of gymnastic exercise where technique is everything and the music is somewhat of a by-product. Congratulations guys! - Sun, 7 Dec 2003 8:38am

everytime I read and or hear people say comments like ability overshadows feeling I have to wonder a)is it because you play like shit? b)you would rather all music be played by technically inept goofs with emotional problems or is it c) you play like shit? - Sun, 7 Dec 2003 4:05pm

I know Death Metal Dave is all over the triggers and his new DDrum set-up but give me a mike anyday over the triggers.
Every pedal is different and so are the shoes you wear(or barefeet if your a real f*ing Animal) will feel different.
That's the beauty of the challenge. - Sun, 7 Dec 2003 4:38pm

get 2 midgets and tape wood mallets to their stump-arms, put 'em down by the kick drum(s) and boot the back of their fucking heads over and over real fast. cheap as hell, unless you have to feed them. - Sun, 7 Dec 2003 7:30pm

I thought i add my 2 cents. I've never had the fortune of trying axis pedals, but i use DW 5000 accelerator pedals and there pretty damn good. Very sensitive and lots of response for high speed kicking. - Sun, 7 Dec 2003 10:46pm

I too have a Gibralter pedal and it's so friggin sturdy that IMO you would have to play like an ape to break one. OK prices too. But if you are a typical metal-style drummer and are serious I suspect you should just pay the dough and buy the best; it will save you going through three or four pedals and having to get used to each of them (which is a hassle when you play blitzkreig double kick). - Mon, 8 Dec 2003 11:24am

hey..thanks for all the input guys! i know in the end it all boils down to personal preference..but it does help to hear about other peoples experience...and scott..no..im not a metal drummer..not near good enough!.. as you know- i do play fast hardcore though...and like the occassional double bass part...my current pearl dbl pedal which i bought back in 1992..is finally dying a painfull death..and needs to be replaced ...cheers! - Mon, 8 Dec 2003 4:15pm

I just posted this in the gear section, but I have an offer of $270 for the 6 month old Iron Cobras. If you can beat that they are yours. And no, I don't mean $270.01. - Mon, 8 Dec 2003 5:15pm

Hey man, in my opinion the Axis can seem a bit rigid. In place of the traditional strap or chain drive is a pivoting metal titanium arm, all one piece. You may find that your dynamics from light to hard will suffer because of this...i think it all depends on what style of music as well. For speed metal this pedal may be a secret weapon. Either way it just takes a little time to get used to it.

If you decide to go with the DW5000 - my advise would be, Careful of the chain drive.
I found that because the chain plate doesn't have a gaurd supporting the slack of the pedals "play back" action if you got going too fast and released your foot from the pedal board at any time you may run into the problem of de-railing. like riding a bike and the chain falls off, not fun if you're on stage or nailing that perfect take in the studio (at $100 per hour). I suppose you can tighten the response by removing a link or two but realistically all you're doing is reducing your chance of a possible nightmare, not eliminating it.

I play the Tama Iron Cobras and i find they work best for me

Just my opinion, everyone plays different, good luck. - Mon, 8 Dec 2003 8:59pm

Hey does anyone know how go about trying to remove links from a chain-driven pedal? I suppose it's different for every company. I'm wondering if there's a specific tool one can get, or if it's best to just take it into a shop and have a shop guy do it. I've got a Gibraltar Intruder 2 which needs 1 maybe 2 links removed, any help would be much appreciated. - Tue, 9 Dec 2003 9:49am

Ya I'd have to go with the Tama Iron Cobra's, not only do they have the coolest name (It's like a Louis Gossett jr movie) but I find they work the best for me.

Pearl had engineering issues with the Power Shifter series. The footboard wasn't parallel with the base. I took it to the Pearl factory, and all their Power Shifter pedals had this defect. Later, I snapped the beater rod. - Tue, 9 Dec 2003 7:53pm

I have Iron Cobra's, but I just picked up a set of yamaha direct drive flying dragons. The yamaha's are a very nice set of pedals, extremely sturdy and really smooth. makes me wonder why someone didnt make a direct drive system sooner. I prefer the yamahas to the iron cobras. - Wed, 10 Dec 2003 7:59pm
