i'd like to start off by asking a few key questions about recording on cubase:

1.) how does one export onto mp3 or AIFF?

2.) do i need a "breakout box" to record from external mics/inputs?

3.) are their any other audio recording/producing software titles out there for mac os X with full function at an easier level?

thanks.

What I would suggest is that you post this question on a music technology list. A good one (though high volume so be warned) would be the "music-bar" on ampfea.org:

http://www.ampfea.org/mailman/listinfo/music-bar

Cubase is a full on sequencer / multi-track audio app. Another option would be Logic but I doubt that you would Logic any easier (I think Cubase is genrerally considered easier to grasp than Logic). There is also the free version of ProTools which might a reasonable choice if you do not need advanced MIDI sequencing, just audio recording.

If you want to record stuff in you need to use a sound card of some type (either the built in if you don't care about quality or a decent pro audio card). If you want to record in from a microphone you need either a pre-amp or a mixer. I'd probably recommend getting a litter external mixer since they always come in handy and this will get you some mic pre-amps (a 6 channel Behringer mixer is peanuts).

Anyway, if you need more than that search through the music-bar archives or try subscribing (but remember it is a high volume list).

I think they will but regardless, this fellow is using Mac OSX, not the OS of the beast.

I was at the Pro Tools website just yesterday looking to mooch a free copy, but alas, only available for win98 and no upgrade. Tried the disk too, but it wont load on XP at all.. typical pro tools trickery. For XP, I do believe you have to buy a hardware component in order to get a copy.

Anyhow, tis irrelevant, carry on.

Ive been playing with Cubase SX lately too. - Tue, 25 Nov 2003 7:57pm

It really depends on budget and personal preferences as to what sequencer you use.
For exporting in Aiff and Mp3 check under file menu for "bounce" that should give you the choice of a few formats.

I have only worked a bit with Cubase. I work mostly with Protools in OS 9.2.2 due to plugins that are not in the OS X version.

another sequencer you can use is Logic. It has OS X support as far as I know so its an option too. - Tue, 25 Nov 2003 9:21pm

The most useful and active online forum for recording at home is http://www.homerecording.com/bbs.... they have an active Cubase forum, but the newbie forum is where these questions will get tons of answers, plus you can read a lot of other people's questions and start to get your head around it.

Be warned: there is no turning back, you will be poor and suffer from gear lust for the rest of your life. I know. I am deep in myself. I use a PC with Sonar 2.2XL and way too many other things but nowhere near enough stuff ... - Wed, 26 Nov 2003 5:31am

Cubase is a nice program, for OSX i would check out Digital Performer by MOTU. I played around with this quite a bit and found it pretty nice and easy to work with. LOTS of MIDI stuff but awsome live stuff as well. I dunno what you want but this should be something to check out. Give it a look. http://www.motu.com
