Message Board > Music Chitchat - Heavy > What bands are worth covering? |
Sour_Girl User Info... | when it comes to covering another bands music you kinda have to think about the message you putting out by covering it. what are the most relevant bands to cover? - Thu, 10 Jul 2003 3:51pm
The Ref User Info... | More importantly, what do people want to hear? Do they want to hear old rock, newer rock, punk, metal, dance??? Kind of a tight wire to walk to keep yourself gratified as well as the audience. - Thu, 10 Jul 2003 4:40pm
ROSS B AY User Info... | AC/DC - Thu, 10 Jul 2003 4:56pm
ticklefish User Info... | I always go for one of two things: either it is a song that is a perfect fit for my style, and whether or not it is popular is irrelevant or, go for something that is so unlike my style and give it a total reworking...then it needs to be popular so that people will appreciate the joke/statement (ie doing Pat Benatar Heartbreaker like motorhead) - Thu, 10 Jul 2003 5:10pm
davescene User Info... | I love DC. Have you heard the original version of Back in Black? It's Brian Johnson singing, but with different beginning and guitar solo, ending and sounds just like Bon - it's awesome. - Thu, 10 Jul 2003 5:10pm
Sour_Girl User Info... | should people even attempt to cover bands like zepplin or pink floyd? and if so, do the songs need to be reworked to give the cover artist distinction or are they too good to be fucked with? - Thu, 10 Jul 2003 6:30pm
ROSS B AY User Info... | i said ac/dc. - Thu, 10 Jul 2003 6:51pm
Ty Stranglehold User Info... | In The Hoosegow, we always get a good response with our covers of "Pay To Cum" by Bad Brains and "Wild In The Streets" By Circle Jerks. - Thu, 10 Jul 2003 7:22pm
Sour_Girl User Info... | do you change the songs at all or stick to the original sound? - Thu, 10 Jul 2003 7:46pm
Rael User Info... | I've never understood why you would cover a song and make it sound 'exactly' like the original. It might be fun to play, but for the audience, why don't they just listen to the original?? I think if you're going to do a cover, you should make it into a different interpretation of the song. Lovers in a Dangerous Time by Bruce Cockburn is a good example when it was covered by Barenaked Ladies... they changed the style, etc... so now there's 2 versions of that song worth listening to... if ya like that sorta thang.. - Thu, 10 Jul 2003 8:01pm
ROSS B AY User Info... | all you gotta do is learn the lyrics and notes, structure, then do it like you do it. don't think too much about it. - Thu, 10 Jul 2003 8:37pm
Ty Stranglehold User Info... | I find that you learn the song and keep playing it without comparing it to the original. After awile you can go back and listen to the original and find out how much you've changed it without even trying. - Thu, 10 Jul 2003 9:10pm
Sour_Girl User Info... | good point, but what if the song is Stairway to heaven or something... do you not even attampt or what? - Thu, 10 Jul 2003 9:26pm
Spark User Info... | if theres a song (like stairway) that you really fucking love to play, do it. The audience will feel the vibe if your really into it. I don't think theres any right or wrong when it comes to music only expression. go for it, if someone doesn't like it, fuck em! - Thu, 10 Jul 2003 9:41pm
Spark User Info... | unless your nickelback and kid rock covering Elton John. if so, don't do it! - Thu, 10 Jul 2003 9:45pm
KnifeGhost User Info... | I dunno, you kinda run the risk of looking like assholes if you cover something _too_ classic...... That said, in our previous incarnation, we (The Poppies) threw around the idea of cover Time by Floyd.... That could have worked..... I would love to cover The Safety Dance..... But it's a fine line to walk..... If you cover a song from one of your strong influences, you run the risk of sounding like you're a cover band that happens to write original material..... Like, could you imagine Default covering Nickelback? - Fri, 11 Jul 2003 3:45am
The Ref User Info... | Definately! Once a band is tight and is used to one another and your doing a cover, paraphrase to max! That's one of the great things about music as an art! interpretations... - Fri, 11 Jul 2003 9:43am
ballz andy User Info... | GG ALLEN - Wed, 30 Jul 2003 4:38am
helen von trumpkin User Info... | I think someone should cover buritos by sublime, but thats just my opinion! - Fri, 1 Aug 2003 11:35am
lily_liquor User Info... | BAD NEWS...and you and you and you and you and you - Fri, 1 Aug 2003 12:21pm
ballz andy User Info... | Tiny Tim!! - Fri, 1 Aug 2003 12:34pm
Brandon User Info... | in response to The Ref's post (not arguing, just going off on my own tangent) >More importantly, what do people want to hear? Do >they want to hear old rock, newer rock, punk, metal, >dance??? Kind of a tight wire to walk to keep yourself >gratified as well as the audience Well I dont know about the rest of you musicians out there, but I play music mostly for myself. (maybe i am a inconsiderate bastard) If people like it then, great!! thats rad!! And if they dont like it they can piss up a rope. Or just go have a smoke or something - Sat, 2 Aug 2003 4:06am
Ty Std User Info... | gg allin was a prick. He doesnt deserve to be recognized but his songs might be a good message to send out if you want to promote sex, drugs, and rock and roll. - Tue, 5 Aug 2003 6:31pm
dan conner User Info... | Black betty by the Who and some other people who dunnit... great song! The who wouldn't be too bad for covers... And Ty STD, are you of the STD's? Any shows again anytime soon? - Tue, 5 Aug 2003 10:51pm
Lurker User Info... | Yeah I'll go with GG Allin. Best messages by far. I like the quotes on the album covers like "Play loud and kill yourself. Thanks to no fuckin' body but me." -GG - Thu, 7 Aug 2003 11:50pm
