grimlord User Info... | O.K. here is the age old question ,who started metal? Is it Black Sabbath or Led Zep or some would even say The Beatles (helter skelter has some chunky riff for the times} - Sun, 9 Mar 2008 11:59am
yog sototh User Info... | I am going to say black sabbath, because they never changed there themes from love songs to songs about ramblin and such and pretty much stuck to metalish topics. - Sun, 9 Mar 2008 2:33pm
trevor corey User Info... | Steppenwolf were the first to mentioned "heavy metal thunder" in 1968. - Sun, 9 Mar 2008 5:31pm
Mutilashawn User Info... | I did. You're welcome. - Sun, 9 Mar 2008 6:31pm
Drustanos User Info... | No single band created it. The sound evolved from other styles and would not be around if not for them. Metal is too broad a genre to generalize as starting from one place. Much of it has nothing to do with sabbath or zep. - Sun, 9 Mar 2008 8:08pm
RockNRollRobbieBoyTheRockNRollRockStar User Info... | I believe the term Heavy Metal was coined by the fellow who wrote stuff for Blue Oyster Cult (Sandy Pearlman ?). But then again Steppenwolf may predate that claim with Born To Be Wild - Sun, 9 Mar 2008 8:19pm
[email protected] User Info... | Who cares who coined the term? It doesn't mean anything. Look at the term "rock". It can cover anything from chuck berry to godsmack. Are these bands the same in any way? No. Maybe it meant something in the 60's or 70's but it is just pointless now. Again, the genre is too big to generalize. A better question would be something like "who/what influenced band X" - Sun, 9 Mar 2008 8:36pm Edited: Sun, 9 Mar 2008 8:37pm
Drustanos User Info... | Stupid live vic, why does it display my e-mail address as my nickname when I answer two posts without logging in/out? - Sun, 9 Mar 2008 8:39pm
mikey User Info... | Metal has is and has been many different bands with very different sounds. However, the first and only true father of metal is Black Sabbath. - Sun, 9 Mar 2008 10:03pm
trevor corey User Info... | Judas Priest? - Sun, 9 Mar 2008 11:18pm
Dr.DoomXXX User Info... | No, Johnny Cash. He sang metal type lyrics and was dressed all in black before any of them. - Mon, 10 Mar 2008 9:53am
Tim-Bitchfork User Info... | " No single band created it. The sound evolved from other styles and would not be around if not for them. Metal is too broad a genre to generalize as starting from one place. Much of it has nothing to do with sabbath or zep." Aye - Mon, 10 Mar 2008 10:58am
evilkleg User Info... | It was Black Sabbath. Ozzy is the Godfather of Metal. Their name is metal, their themes are metal, their sound is metal. There was no metal before them. End of discussion. - Mon, 10 Mar 2008 12:01pm
RockNRollRobbieBoyTheRockNRollRockStar User Info... | I bet if you asked Tony Iommi, he'd say they were a heavy blues band in the early days of Sabbath. - Mon, 10 Mar 2008 4:58pm
tom User Info... | Hey R'N'RRB The R'N'R Star, watched an interview with Tony Iommi recently and I believe he said exactly that. - Mon, 10 Mar 2008 7:12pm
Krystal Koffin User Info... | It was a combo of the Doom Death sound of Black Sabbath and the Speed Metal of Judas Priest that opened the gate for the rest of the genre to spew from. You could take from other sorces but this was the major influence that started it all. If you look at any other bands from after that point I am sure list them as their influence. - Thu, 13 Mar 2008 9:42am
Swingin' Joe User Info... | It's a dumb question to begin with..... - Fri, 14 Mar 2008 6:27am

Hang The DJ User Info... | I find there are a lot of similarities shared between classical music and metal... I think classical music, not really by one specific composer, may have aided in the birth of metal... Whoever the "first metal band" was may not have even listened to classical music, but they were exposed to it and other rock music .... so the foundation already existed, they just had to mix the two together. Sabbath, Deep Purple, Iron Butterfly and Zeppelin are usually the ones people will say started metal... Judas Priest kind of lead the genre out of that specific sound... That's one scary Manowar picture that's sure to give me nightmares for, oh, 2 weeks or so... - Wed, 19 Mar 2008 12:44pm

Cream User Info... | There is a really cool documentary called "A Headbanger's Journey" or something along those lines, and it was actually made by an anthropologist from Victoria. You can find it on youtube. He talks about the roots of metal (sabbath, cream, hendrix, zeppelin, deep purple, etc.) as well as the classical influences such as Wagner and Beethoven. Here we are: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PXZ2bctlKA&feature=related - Fri, 21 Mar 2008 4:10pm Edited: Fri, 21 Mar 2008 4:12pm
Nicholas Antoni Marek Gibas User Info... | I'm going to agree with the Metalocalypse hate. Not funny whatsoever. Adult Swim has FAR superior humour going on in all of their other shows. Plus wow making fun of metal, really hard stuff...*yawn* But as to who started metal? Robert Johnson. Period. Sold his soul to the DEVIL for extreme guitar skills. Anyone else do that? There you have it. - Fri, 21 Mar 2008 5:18pm
trevor corey User Info... | Yup R.J. rocks. Although I would like to throw in this little diddy from a Port Angeles band in the early days. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rucCH1b12vw Rumour has it, he was supposed to sing "In the garden of Eden", but was so hammered at rehearsal it came out as Inagadadavida. Sounded good, so they stuck with that instead. - Sat, 22 Mar 2008 1:06am
trevor corey User Info... | I love it when Roundemup uses the term "hesher". One of these days I'll dig out my 1984 George Bonner year book and post pictures of (UTA) Mike and me. You haven't seen "hesher" until you see the shrub contingent from that school, that year. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBsbCMIyG6E - Sat, 22 Mar 2008 1:11am Edited: Sat, 22 Mar 2008 1:15am
