wackakapow User Info... | How does one become one of the selected elite, simple popularity? - Wed, 15 Mar 2006 12:55pm
The Box Drone User Info... | I think it's stupid that a local independant record store won't sell local independant CD's... I mean if it's consignment, what do they have to lose? If they're taking up to much space, they could just rotate out the old stuff that isn't selling... - Wed, 15 Mar 2006 1:15pm
lonemonk User Info... | I'm not sure what the criteria is, I didn't even know there was a criteria. That sucks because Ditch is a far better record store than Lyles Place has been for the last decade or so. Hey wackakapow, Pretend you haven't talked to them and take your EP, or the new one down to Ditch anyway and see if they'll take it face to face. Tell them it was done at hendersons. They've always been pretty kind to People's War. Or just flat out ask them what their selection criteria is. I'm not sure who else in town is consistent at consignments. I've had some luck selling CDs out at the sooke music store, but he wasn't interested in consignment selling either. - Wed, 15 Mar 2006 3:42pm
Peter Gardner User Info... | Oh! Goldy Music. They might. Check them out - Wed, 15 Mar 2006 3:49pm
moron User Info... | It will be a mix of both space issues and overall hassle. Normally they probably deal with 10 or less distributors for everything in the store. Each local act increases that number by one, means that they have to keep the money for each transaction separate, they have to keep track of exactly how many are on the floor, deal with the bookkeeping or sell the discs under the table, etc. Unlike live events, most discs will sit around for a long time so they will have these lingering petty transactions for who knows how long waiting to turn into a scene a year later when the band comes back and asks what's sold. They get diddly out of it in most cases, just hassle. So not surprising they are not totally excited about it. Cheers - Wed, 15 Mar 2006 6:19pm
zakco User Info... | Moron is exactly right. With the sheer number of indie releases these days and the VERY low profit margin on consignments it's a courtesy service more than a business venture. I managed a music store for several years where we consigned local CDs and it was a huge hassle for all of the reasons Moron pointed out. Now....if all the local artists formed some kind of distribution collective and had a centralized pricing and inventory system to take the pain away from the retailers I'm sure you'd see far more outlets for selling indie product. Any entrepreneurs out there...? -Z- - Wed, 15 Mar 2006 9:18pm
wackakapow User Info... | ^^^ this is a clever plan, and "moron is exactly right" is tastily ironic. I thought the profit margin for consignment was a bit too low, if you ask me. Lyle's only takes $1.95 for each sale which is hardly worth their while as a business. I'm willing to drop our overall price pretty significantly just to get the cd in stores (though now we've postponed the full album until September so it won't be for a while). Still, if I were to open up a local indie-based store, I would not be nearly so monetarily kind as Lyle's and I think that would allow one to accept a wider variety of cds. Former record shop workers: would your shops have accepted more albums had artists allowed you a greater profit margin, (like 40% instead of 20%) or is selling local acts just a pain in the ass no matter what? - Thu, 16 Mar 2006 3:16pm Edited: Thu, 16 Mar 2006 3:30pm
