Some shameless corporate pillaging of punk's cultural heritage:

Here's Nike's apology after a stink was raised:

No sure what I think about it. . .

Is Nike's reference to Minor Threat any different really than folks ripping off Marvel comics for gig posters, bands stealing the Metallica or AC/DC logo outlines or corporate spoof logos that are on shirts all over town?

I've no love for Nike, just not sure how to say justify this is being wrong when I've been just as guilty of appropriating other's symbols for my own purposes.

Cheers

I would say yes. Not that plagarism is cool, but when you borrow/steal a theme from a logo or comic book, etc, it's a different reason. When that's done, it's done for the reason that this is a like minded entity that has similar ideals to another. In some cases it's more like a tribute. Nike is simply co-opting yet another target demographic that they feel they haven't yet conquered. I would compare it to a tribute band like Power Clown or BC/DC vs. Green Day just blatantly ripping off Oasis (who, by the way, also sucks). - Fri, 1 Jul 2005 9:08am

There was a follow-up post where people submitted some other artwork (mainly album covers) that could be "stolen" by evil corporations... some are really good.

All images are ripe for co-opting - when situationists do it, it's detournment. The problem is that the situationists were right, and the commodity spectacle now uses their methods to sell 'culture' back to 'the kids.' In 1982, Minor Threat and skate culture was radical; in 2005 skate culture, and even punk rock (as a musical style), is completely mainstream. I think the lesson is to continue to critique one's own 'style,' or accept that 'style' itself is reactionary. - Fri, 1 Jul 2005 4:45pm

Yes; one Nike is trying to fool people into thinking they're something they're not, with no ironic intent. The other is a joke, since I'm pretty sure when I stick "The Thing" yelling "it's clobberin time" on a poster no one thinks I'm trying to sell them superheroes, cosmic radiation or comic books. - Mon, 4 Jul 2005 6:11pm
