Dave User Info... | Anyone ever done one of these up professionally? Just wondering what sort of things should be included, etc. - Wed, 29 Jun 2005 12:20pm
Brand X Media User Info... | Really all you need is a bit of background info, maybe a postcard and a CD or demo. Color printing if possible. I've received a LOT of overly stuffed press kits with so much garbage it's not even funny - Color printed folders with 2-3 business cards, fold out posters, bookmarks, cd's with occasional DVD video (usually a badly done music video included). Basically don't send a giant envelope of useless junk that will make you look like your over compensating for the lack of musical merit. Maybe a button and a sticker, nothing to overboard. As far as the writing, keep it simple and try to sound unpretentious. I constantly get statements that are just a giant list of "influences". If you go out and claim that your band sound like a cross between Captain Beefheart, Polyphinic Spree and Black Sabbath - that's what people will want to hear, thus they will probably end up being disappointed either way unless you deliver just that. Also, bands constantly list their "gear" for some reason. Unless you're Harry Partch or you’ve made it yourself out of tent poles and monkey skulls - nobody cares what kind of instrument you have or what kind of amps you jam with. Most people I've talked to who have decent press releases have a friend who is somewhat impartial to write a bio - takes the pressure off and lowers the risk of sounding like a narcissistic jerk, press quotes and tidbits of reviews don’t hurt (unless it’s a bad review) but like I’ve said before – if you’re creative enough to write a good song, you can write a good bio. Bottom line, don’t be pretentious and just try to send out something that you would be happy to get in the mail without blowing tons of money. - Wed, 29 Jun 2005 12:56pm
The One After Two User Info... | I'll agree with Jesse on pretty much every point. Music reveiwers and radio/TV/NewsPaper types get tons and tons and tons of these things. I say, take the time to make it personal. No dear sir madame, and research where you're sending it. If you make metal, send it to mags, zines and radio stations that have or feature some metal. The reviewer is probably a hugr music fan first and digs stickers and buttons. Thats all you need with your disc and some bio info. Factual and to the point. Where you're from, what you do, when you'll be in town. Maybe you got some "name brand talent" that produced the disc or you openned for The Stones.. sure fire that in there. Jesee wrote this and its awesome: "Bottom line, don’t be pretentious and just try to send out something that you would be happy to get in the mail without blowing tons of money." It doesn't hurt to blow a little smoke up the mag's ass too. It works. Dear Jesse, I love reading Brand X, its a great site and I like how much effort you put into writing up independant bands. We are a Victoria band and have a new disc out. I'd appreciate if you could find some time to review it. Love and Kisses, Area 151 Edit out the spelling mistakes and you're gold. - Wed, 29 Jun 2005 4:07pm

Brand X Media User Info... | Hey The One After Two I appreciate the compliment, unfortunately those spelling mistakes will likely keep poppoing up - I'm a drinker. If you want a review send it out to the address on the site. http://brandxmedia.ca/submit.htm Cheers. - Fri, 1 Jul 2005 10:20am
