so what's the deal with getting an agent on the island?
anyone have any good advice about who to avoid, or conversely, anyone you recommend?
interested in hearing some options when it comes to representation, promotion, marketing, etc.

any help would be greatly appreciated ;D - Thu, 23 Jun 2005 12:13pm

I've come across many many up n' coming artists who piss a lot of money away on 'Management', but in a town this size, it's snake oil. If you're good at what you do, you will be asked to be on a bill by a venue or promoter and typically oppertunities will present themselves. It's of much more use to know a cheap printer, designer, affordable merch producer or scrap all of that and go DIY. If your looking to book a tour - do your homework and ask around. If you can write a song, you can probably write a decent press release.

Just my opinion. - Thu, 23 Jun 2005 4:58pm

If you need insight and advice, try talking to someone who knows about the information you seek...advice is usually free, and i think that most people in victoria are more than pleased to offer some. If you are really desperate to spend your money, buy them a bottle of vodka or something.

- take the time to properly assess that the person in question actually DOES know what he\she is talking aboot. - Fri, 24 Jun 2005 8:15am

I don't what kind of music you do, but you most surely won't need a rep. till things start getting heavy and pay cheques end with a few 000.00s.

Just do what Jesse and + recomend and give it a go yourself. If your good, you're star will rise.

When you start getting Hot Hot Heat or Armchair Cynics then look for someone to advocate for you. Maybe email one of the Cynics for advise or Kincaide, they are coming back from a DIY cross Canada journey.

Moneyshot do it all themselves. Maurice has landed some pretty impressive gigs... I think they do it themselves too... email any of these guys. - Sat, 25 Jun 2005 7:46pm

Good advice, although, it can be quite a daunting thing to look at. (promoting yourself) ask around to other people who do it wel and they will help you out.

P.S. Maurice is in relations with Mann Music Management.
P.P.S. Whenever I see Connor I think he is mentally undressing me. - Sun, 26 Jun 2005 12:21am

who said anything about punk rock?

thanks for all the constructive advice, criticisms, etc. its all pretty much what i've heard before, although it was originally a music industry pro who told me to seek management in order to make any headway. so conflicting advice all around.

thanks i guess? - Tue, 28 Jun 2005 10:04am

I love music industry pros. There just wouldn't be any good music scene in Victoria if it wasn't for them. - Tue, 28 Jun 2005 11:00am

Don't even think about it - if you're too shy to call venues to set up gigs, get a friend who's into that kind of thing to do it. Beyond that, by the time you need it you'll have people beating down the doors to do it for you. - Tue, 28 Jun 2005 5:26pm
