Hey folks. how is this recording?
http://nomotherspride.com/MP3/NMP-NoFeeling.mp3

It was done on a Boss BR1600.

Drums:
4 mics
1-Kick thru ART TubeEQ to board
1-Snare through Behringer mixer (small one)
2 Room mics panned L & R straight to board

Bass:
1-Sm57

Guitar Backing:
1-SM57
Peavey Rockmaster into effects return of RH200SC
There are three backing tracks.

Guitar Lead:
1-SM57
Marshall JCM800 2205 lead channel

Vocals:
1-Sm58
2 vocal tracks. he sang it in just one take for both parts. Crazy.

I've been listening to this thing for so long I hate it now. I don't think the solo fits. If you wanna rewrite the solo I'll send you the track in wav form. You won't get any money or anything but your name may appear on the demo tape. come on you know you want to.

I'm no engineer, but that sounded decent for a demo. A little muddy, and the solo is kinda weak. Not musically/technically weak, but has no presence.

Ya, I don't like the solo at all. But is what I hear when I listen to it so I am kinda stuck with it for the moment. Maybe in a few days, i can redo it. Thanks for the comments. Oh ya, is it un-trebley??? I was listening inthe car and had boost the treble a bit more than usual. Cheers Lucius - Mon, 14 Mar 2005 9:27pm

the kick sounds a little weak and over all the bass frequencies aren't tuned in enough. it's a good attempt of putting together a demo. the drum are just a little flat. that snare needs more CRACK. - Tue, 15 Mar 2005 10:58am

i agree with all above. don't change the solo much it's technically ok for the masses, it just needs more zing.
over all it a very good demo recording.

lyrics are nonesense, but eh! if james brown can grunt and fart through an entire song then it's open season.

Shades of 'nickleback' take that as a compliment of cut that depends on your point of veiw. - Tue, 15 Mar 2005 12:13pm

I can never get the Kick to sound anything like it does in real life. I have tried everything I can think of. I thought the para eq would help but who knows. Do you think I should put a snare mic underneath the snare as well. I have one at about 45 off the top.

Tragedy
Nope, Jay was having trouble making it to practices. He works all the time plus he has got a young family. I think he is singing for Element 7 but I can't be sure. He is by far the absolute best singer I have ever worked with. Have you ever heard Broken Stream?

The recording sucks but showcases his vocal talents.
That dude would so go places with the right band backing him.

Wig
I never read the vocal lyrics I just kinda assumed he was saying something. I guess I will finally read them. I get so caught up with how it sounds I don't even think about it. I guess thats why I post here so you folks can give it to us straight.

Thanks guys. As always your a big help.

for the kick, i'd seperate it from the room by blanketing the whole front. place whatever kick mic you are using to the spot where you hear the resonance of the thump. and make sure you find the mid spot for the kick in the mix. it's soooo crucial that the bass and the kick be in the pocket, sonically and performance-wise. mic that snare with a 57, if not doing so already, 45 degrees sounds good for the aggressive sound i think the song is going in. if you have a mic to spare, get the ring of the rim by placing a mic a mic underneath the snare (watch out for phasing problems.. ha) and situating the "face" towards the rim. again, play around.. because each snare has a different place that the crack! comes from. also, don't use the behringer mixer when tracking the drums. behringer has good stuff, but the pre's on it are no better than the BR1600.

again, it sounds good. but could be tweaked. (don't discount the use of after effects like compression!) - Tue, 15 Mar 2005 2:00pm

You are going to be a little limited in what you can do with the BR1600. Like {+} said, you could play with the bass eq a bit, and it would be nice if you could compress it. Your kick? A good drummer, kick drum, new head, mic, mic placement, and mallet are places to start. I use a D-112. Mic pre is pretty important. Compress when mixing and eq- I find a little boost around 80Hz, a cut around 350Hz, and boosts anywhere from 1kHz to 5kHz. These are usually subtle adjustments, and are done relative to the rest of the mix. You want some thump and some presence, but don't over-do it. If you are serious about a home recording setup, and you aren't scared of the DAW route, I can tell you that Nuendo (now 3) rules. I use it and love it. I use a UAD-1 card as well, which has great compressors, eq's and reverbs in it. For an interface I use a VSL 2020 card and a Soundcraft 328XD board. A few outboard mic pres and some good mics finish it off. I also have a Mackie Control for some tactile control of Nuendo, which is nice, but not really necessary; it just looks cool when the faders move. Anyway, that's my two cent. Oh, and try some vocal harmonies in the choruses, especially in the latter part of the song, but again, don't over-do it. - Tue, 15 Mar 2005 3:46pm

you can export your WAV files from the BR1600 onto a CD and edit them in pretty much any program. get that bass compressed and thumping! you'll really notice how the parts seperate and become more present. - Tue, 15 Mar 2005 6:58pm

Hey there, I like the song but the instruments sound very separate and I 'm not hearing enough of the higher end sounds and lead vocals to balance where the drums are sitting. The guitar is muddied behind everything.
Of course I'm no mixing artist, but the cymbals distracted from the guitar and vocals. Good luck, SweetGrass - Wed, 16 Mar 2005 5:53pm

if you have all the tracks seperately I could give it a go for you ... and also fix up that kick.

basically, I'd do up part of the song as a demo to show you want I can do for nothing.

let me know
