Brumy User Info... | Alright, i need to know what guitar equipment i need to make pretty good guitar recordings for using a computer. Right now, haha im using an rpx400 and running that into protracks. Its not great but its what i got and i need to know what i should get to get maximum quality with spending less than 800$. The best equipment without spending more than 800$ Thanks a bunch! - Mon, 14 Mar 2005 2:01pm
stringbender User Info... | The best? that is tough, depends on your needs, but if you have an axe and an amp that you really like, all you need is an sm57 mic, a decent preamp, and there you have it for well under $800. properly Mic'd amps usually (not always) sound better than any modelling. If you don't have the amp at all, you could still score a decent amp, mic and preamp for $800. What kind of soundcard have you got on your machine? A decent soundcard with good A/D converters goes a long way too. - Mon, 14 Mar 2005 2:05pm
Ironcount User Info... | Definitely agree with the amp modelling comment - avoid amp modelling if possible and mic your amp at different distances for a wide variation in tone. If you're doing acoustic work find yourself a high quality vocal mic and with a little practice you should be able to get pretty pro sounding results. Basically, a decent mic and a good sound card will take a long way on home computer recordings. - Mon, 14 Mar 2005 3:14pm

The Box Drone User Info... | I just got a Eurorack ub502 mixer/preamp for like $60 at L&M, and I'm very happy with it. They have better models with more input tracks for like $170 too that you might want to check out. That's my reccomendation. - Mon, 14 Mar 2005 5:39pm
cooper User Info... | The modelling vs. mic'ing debate could continue forever, but in defense of modelling, what's the point of mic'ing a crap guitar through a crap amp with a crap mic? There's a purpose and place for both techniques and neither one is right or wrong. Crap in = crap out The route I've taken for my home recordings is SM57, StudioProejcts B1 condenser, Tascam US-122 interface, PodXT, computer. That's less than $800 not including the computer. - Mon, 14 Mar 2005 6:20pm
Brumy User Info... | cooper-...and you got decent sonud out of it? I was checking the stuff. Do you have a sample on the net or somthing that i could check out?? - Tue, 15 Mar 2005 7:33am
stringbender User Info... | First: if you don't know what kind of soundcard you have, then you have a cheapo (ie. whatever shipped with the PC). For ~$200 you can get a good quality card in a M-Audio Audiophile 2496, go to MIDIMAN.net to check out M-Audio products, some of the cards have preamps built in, and are pretty decent (better than a Behringer mixer pre) SECOND: amps vs modelling: I am not crapping on modellers, I have one too. NOTE: I said "if you have an amp and guitar that you are happy with the sound....". I will argue that a properly mic'd amp with decent tone will nearly (note the word "nearly"?) always sound better than a modeller. But, yes, a shitty amp with a shitty mic will sound worse than a modeller. But a sm57 is not a shitty mic for recording guitar amps. It is used in every major studio, it is a workhorse. So the question is, is he content with his amp's sound? I do a lot of my tracking with a Johnson J-station and a POD, but for final mixes, I always replace those tracks with a real mic'd amp. Just a starting point, by no means a definitive list: the following purchases would get you good sound (after you have learned all the technique aspects) within your budget: 1) An M-audio Firewire Solo (has XLR input with phantom power http://midiman.net/products/en_us/FireWireSolo-main.html you need a firewire port on your PC for this. 2) OR the MobilePre USB http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MobilePreUSB-main-1.html you still have money to burn after this. Now, if you want a modeller, you can still afford a Line 6 POD 2.0 or an XT if that is what tickles your fancy. Or you can afford a decent small amp, if modelling amps are what you are after, the Tech21 amps work great and are cheap. If you want a "real" amp, you can go solid state, and there are many affordable options, or you can go with a tube amp, which are pricier, but you could still handle a Fender Blues Jr. Other than that, it is all recording technique. - Tue, 15 Mar 2005 7:38am
