Lucius User Info... | I find myself changing my rig around pretty much every year or two (except my guitars). Now, to quantify this, I aint a professional player but have been known to rip it up pretty good on the old guitar soo take that for what its worth. I guess my question is do you dudes/dudettes who actually make a living at playing change your gear as much as the bedroom wanker IE: me. My current setup is: Guitars: Ibanez Jem, Ibanez 7-string 7321, Kramer BarettaI, Jackson Rhodes (aka: yellow banana). Amps: Marshall JCM800 2205 (head), Randall Rh200SC (head), Verlage VTR 100 (head from late 60's), Marshall JCM800 1982 (cab), Peavey 412MS(cab) Effects: Peavey Rockmaster preamp,BBE sonic Maximizer, ART Tube Eq (little parameteric), Line6 Echo Park, Tokai Flanger, Boss DS-1, Boss SD-1, Boss OD-2 ( I think??) I think that is pretty much it not including my recording gear. I have changed amps pretty much yearly for several years. I know I have wasted a tonne of time gear hunting when I could have been playing so don't give me that lecture please. Cheers Lucius - Sun, 13 Feb 2005 7:59pm
cooper User Info... | Oh my, story of my life right now. Post-secondary student trying to pay my own way through skool with the goal of no debt upon graduation, all while contributing hard-earned dollars to a gear addiction. Result? No current band and no finished work (album) to my credit. It's not so much the guitars and amps with me (not that I wouldn't want to fill my walls with different axes), but rather the effects & stompboxes. I have already outgrown my pedalboard and would need a second one of equivalent size to fit all my toys, yet I'm continually on the lookout for deals on pedals. Case in point: this weekend in Vancouver I picked up an Alesis Ineko. I've never heard this unit before, nor do I have much practical use for it, but I bought it anyways because I figure I'll get some cool sounds out of it, even if no one but myself is ever going to hear it. I'm not going to list my gear collection on here, but yes, I know what you're talking about, and yes, I get bored with my gear on almost a monthly basis. There is no hope for us... ...well, gotta run! (need to check out what this Ineko is capable of...) - Sun, 13 Feb 2005 10:34pm

mica User Info... | There is a name for it. It's called GAS (Gear Aquisition Syndrome). - Mon, 14 Feb 2005 12:00pm
Zippgunn User Info... | The industry LOVES people like you; the guys who buy and buy and buy yet are never satisfied with their gear. This just in; there is no magic bullet that will make you the next Malmsteen or satriani, no magic amp that has every tone known to man. What's more, what would you do if you had every concievable tone combination? that's right, you would probably spin your wheels doing nothing while scrolling through thousands of mostly useless sounds. I can tell that most of you don't play live much; those of us who do have figured out long ago that the more pedals that you have the more there is to go wrong. As for me, well, yes it's true I have a gazillion guitars, amps and pedals (13, 8 and about 20 respectively) but I still use my FIRST EVER decent guitar almost exclusively for live work. I prefer to use as few pedals as possible (although recently I have used as many as 8, an all time high for me) and my most used "amp" right now is actually an old 50's era record player, which sounds fantastic. the bottom line is, of course, practicality. I love the sound of an Ampeg SVT cab but after 4 weeks of schlepping one around Europe and moving it up what seemed like dozens of Dutch staircases I craved something just a little bit lighter. Ditto for pedals; after you've had a few gigs screwed up by dodgy pedals you start to discard the ones that you don't use too much just to keep things running more reliably. I remember when Richard Thompson played Harpo's some years back; in mid-set he announced a "special guest" and who should saunter onstage but (experimental free form guitarist) Henry Kaiser who proceeded to attempt to set up a massive, convoluted MIDI guitar thingy that naturally didn't utter a peep of sound. He finally gave up after about 10 minutes of farting around and left the stage suitably chagrined. So even though I have seen Kaiser, I still haven't seen him play. Stupid, no? - Mon, 14 Feb 2005 2:15pm
mica User Info... | So Zippgunn, you have a 41 piece guitar rig? I guess that means that the industry loves you too. You've got GAS. Face it man, most guys I know find it entertaining to toy around with gadgets and a lot of people just like to collect stuff. Shit, if I had the dough I'd have a properly humidified room with classic guitars lining the walls. Would I gig with all of them? Probably not. But I would definately try recording with all of them to see what kind of sounds I could get. The same can be said for effects. Yeah, its good to get to know your gear, but there is definately nothing wrong with experimenting whenever one gets the chance. - Mon, 14 Feb 2005 5:25pm
Lucius User Info... | The industry LOVES people like you; Just happy to do my part. The does seem to be some misleading comments in your post however. When I play on stage, I only use my amp, and a delay. However, I am not against using a nicely stacked pedal board :-) - Mon, 14 Feb 2005 7:22pm
slipintotheshade User Info... | i have a fender 10 watt junior and a 57 re-issue buddy holly strat; i have an analog digital delay pedal. oh yeah and some patch cords and a strap. and no i do not ever get tired of my gear. - Mon, 14 Feb 2005 11:51pm
Kickback User Info... | Over the first 6 or so years of playing i went through so many different amps, pedals, and guitars. Although it was more of exploring tones and gear. I used to run 10-15 pedals and a bunch of amps together but it was complicated and any little change to a knob screwed up the whole sound. Moving it was a bitch, stuff broke easily and setting up again was just as bad. I started giggin about the same time i picked up my first JCM 800 2210. Simplicity started with that amp! So today it's just a JCM 800 2204, chorus, overdrive, eq, wah and my SG and LP. Super easy to set up, and it's a warhorse. Hell i dont even really need my pedals they barely effect the tone and i dont use my wah much. Aside from switching amp models from the 2210 to 2204 last year my setup hasnt changed in years and i'm happy as shit with it. - Tue, 15 Feb 2005 12:50am
Ian johnson User Info... | i play live monthly or bi monthly in diplomatic impuinity and one ave. i only have 2 guitars and one amp and 2 basses and one amp i have 5 pedals. but i still constantly want more gear it has nothing to do with playing live i dont even take my pedals to concerts that often it has more about having fun and branching out man like i have a 69 tele thinline reissue i love that guitar so much i tattoed it on my arm. still doesnt stop me thinking about jazzmasters or rickenbackers cuase there new different and fun to play. getting more gear is more for getting stuff thats more suited to other genres (if ur not too close minded this shouldnt seem strange) like i play in a reggea band i woldnt really like an sg or anything they're too phat for that i would want something more twangy like a tele but if i started a rock band on guitar i would probally by a les paul or sg so ya, its more about branching out than it is about accumulating gear - Tue, 15 Feb 2005 12:57am
Lucius User Info... | Hey Dave what is an analog digital delay pedal? Who makes it and how does it work?? Cheers Lucius - Tue, 15 Feb 2005 9:27am
alain User Info... | My guess, analog simulation available on a digital delay pedal. As for me, one amp, one guitar, but I'm a pedal lover. - Tue, 15 Feb 2005 9:50am
[+} User Info... | too much stuff. stop now. - Tue, 15 Feb 2005 11:20am
Brendan User Info... | I'm totally guilty of being a gear junky. I've got a Les Pual, SG, and strat, plus a Larivee, and I just picked up an old Gibson acoustic too. I have boatloads of pedals, a couple muffs, small stones, a fuzz face, electric mistress, the list goes on. And I finally got my hands on a space echo. But I'm a one amp man, that's a Fender Prosonic. It rules the universe. And, yes, Aidan, it's got tubes. Jack ass. hahaha - Tue, 15 Feb 2005 3:06pm
slipintotheshade User Info... | whoops, i was drunk when i wrote that, its an analog delay pedal by boss. - Wed, 16 Feb 2005 12:08am
Colin {Sic} User Info... | this brotha used to be a gear junky, and I still love the junky's cause you keep my paycheck comming. But lets be serious, the most fun I havce been having with music has been in the last two years when I focused on MELODY AND SONG STRUCTURE. My rig right now is Strat with heavy ass strings (11-58) into a memory man into a Bassman re-issue. I sometimes use a od-3 or a tube screamer if I cant get it loud enough to breakup. The big muff is cool tool. If i could buy one more piece of gear it would be a Dual REC or a DSL 50 just cause I want to get a heavy riff band together. - Wed, 16 Feb 2005 4:17pm
dooker User Info... | colin is a gear junkies dealer (maybe a pusher too) - esp us old farts who actually have some money from time to time - right now I have settle don a couple of hot rods in stereo with a Boss VF1 processor controlled by a behringer midi control pedal - an old japanese squire strat and a new jag which is pretty for the new wave stuff (I also picked up a cry baby for christmas) - i swear by boomer customs with a 10 on top and a 52 on the bottom - noone mentioned pics - .73 i think - Wed, 16 Feb 2005 7:37pm
Wheate User Info... | I just bought Native Instrument's Guitar Rig, has emulation of almost every freakin amp, cab, effect box and outboard gear available, all fro under 600 bucks. The future, as much as purists will deny, is in computers, soon you'll see guys rippin up on stage getting unbleievablr tones with nothing but a stack and a laptop. - Thu, 17 Feb 2005 11:22am
goff User Info... | buying gear is stupid. just use friends stuff till you break it - Mon, 7 Mar 2005 9:21pm
Isolation Ride User Info... | If you get sick of your gear its a good sign.It means you are working your way into finding the sound thats right for you.Once you have that guitar and amp you like. You probably will never part with it....perfect example "Pink Floyd" they use a tonne of their old shit they used on the albums live in concert to this day. - Tue, 8 Mar 2005 3:55pm
