Cris peterson from leabeau-peterson is really fun, Self taught means you develop bad technique and you can only go so far with it. - Tue, 1 Feb 2005 9:32am

>Self taught means you develop bad technique

That's bullshit. Some of the best drummers are/were self taught (Dennis Chambers, Buddy Rich). A DVD from a top player can teach you more than an hour with a local player with average ability. - Tue, 1 Feb 2005 2:45pm

I had lessons with Murray Creed at Drumgroove Studios- I highly recommend that you make time to give him a call, take it from there.
I had never taken formal lessons until 2 years ago and I'm still applying and learning from what Murray tought me in that one 10 month period.
I'd still be going if money wasn't so tight but i'll get back to lessons for sure. You're only going to get better when you keep learning and who doesn't want to get better?! - Tue, 1 Feb 2005 2:51pm

Bobby, while I'll agree that "some" drummers have made careers with little in the way of formal training, MOST drummers who do not take lessons DO have bad technique and ARE limiting what they can do.

Virtually every professional (or experienced) drummer will recommend you take lessons and you never stop taking lessons.

And teaching is not about the teachers playing ability, it is about their teaching ability. Huge difference there. - Tue, 1 Feb 2005 5:03pm

Yah,if you have a kit play with headphones or to your stereo; as it is like playing to a metronome. Try jamming to a wide selection of styles, to work on your diversity. Lessons help if you have some basics, if you can read then you need 1 drum(surface/something that bounces) and a pair of sticks to practice stick control. It could be boring, like a guitar player practicing scales; however when you take those skills and play it on the set, those rudiments sound tight.
Mainly energy is how you can become a great drum player, as speed is a key factor. Listen to this song & try and pick out the open hats in the chorus. Interracial Terrestrial by Amour De Cosmos -under punk/metal/hardore/
