XJAyX User Info... | What's the difference?? - Mon, 20 Dec 2004 8:22pm
sootsprite User Info... | Hey dood, A gate mutes a sound until it exceeds your set threshhold volume so as to totally silence any background hum. I think that when you say "suppressor" you are refering to what is usually called an expander. Rather than muting, an expander more gently shoves the output volume down when the volume going into it drops below thwe threshhold. It is the opposite of a compressor. Boss makes a pedal called a suppressor which had both functions. Some of them change your tone a bit though, so you'd want to take one for a test ride I'd think. Kickback User Info... | It's true they do rape your tone to a degree. From my experiences i found gates are only good with solving feedback caused by super high gain pedals or low level hums from pickups that become inaudible when you play. But both of those are solved by rolling off your guitar volume. Some amps that are high gain and hum can be gated though their effects loops, but others just keep that annoying jet sound. The "suppressor" was more flexible for music styles. Good for songs with dynamics, and doesnt do that harsh immediate cut off like a gate. If you want something to cut the volume to your guitar cab email Marshall. They make a product that's essentially a noise gate that goes between a head your speakers thus eliminating any sound going to your cab without harming your head. Works really well if your hiss/hum/feedback is caused by your amp and not pedals. - Tue, 21 Dec 2004 12:55am
XJAyX User Info... | My problem is coming from the EQ pedal I'm running. I have a wireless that I use when I play bass that is fine, but when i use it on my guitar it destroys my tone. I've got the sound back to where it was by using an eq pedal, but the gain from the pedal is crating this huge amount of hiss and noise when it's on. It's not audible when I'm playing, and when I shut the e-q pedal off it's much less (back to where it always is on my amp). So I guess I'll have to rent one of each of the pedals and figure out if one will work better than the other if at all. - Tue, 21 Dec 2004 12:54pm
Kickback User Info... | look for a used wireless system for your guitar. why try to compensate with more gear when you know what the problem is. It might cost a bit more but atleast you'll have no hum or hiss when you play and you wont have to dick around with another pedal - Tue, 21 Dec 2004 1:48pm
XJAyX User Info... | I've tried pretty much every wireless available for rental as well a bunch that friends have and I haven't been happy with any of them. I'm not trying to be cheap or save money or anything, I have honestly been unimpressed with every wireless I've tried. Although I have changed my pick ups since then, I still think I'll have to run the eq pedal with them. When i run the eq pedal straight inline with a normal patch cord it does the same thing. Maybe I need to try a different eq. - Tue, 21 Dec 2004 4:59pm
[+} User Info... | what eq pedal are you currently using? and where is it (in front of amp, in the effects loop)? - Tue, 21 Dec 2004 5:39pm
XJAyX User Info... | The EQ pedal is a boss GE-7. It's inline into the Amp. My amp doesn't have an effects loop, it's a Marshall JCM800 2204. - Tue, 21 Dec 2004 6:04pm
[+} User Info... | i'd get the pedal modded. it's 50 dollars... and is the best around. http://tone-jam.com/GE7_mod_page.html - Tue, 21 Dec 2004 6:56pm
XY-SATAN User Info... | I was listening to the sample sound (12 bar blues) on your link for that pedal and holy out of tune guitars batman ! I was also giving a listening to the pedals sounds on the link and the cheep bare bones model sounds the best , go figure ? - Wed, 22 Dec 2004 4:25pm
[+} User Info... | yeah.. kevin's no shredmaster, but you can hear the fidelity difference and the noise reduction. - Wed, 22 Dec 2004 7:01pm
Kickback User Info... | Nice setup man! i'm running the exact same thing (minus the wireless) might i suggest just ditching the wireless since most bands are playing small stages where 30 feet of cable is overkill - Thu, 23 Dec 2004 1:04pm
XJAyX User Info... | It's not the patch chord length that is the problem, it's the tangle or unplugging myself or worst:stepping on it while swinging my guitar and breaking the jack out of the wood. I jump around way too much regardless of the size of the stage and once you are used to the wireless (which I am with the Bass) it's hard to go back. - Fri, 24 Dec 2004 8:00pm
Kickback User Info... | i hear ya. my jack takes a beating too, but imo a little tech work every week or two is better than a jet plane amp. - Sat, 25 Dec 2004 12:58pm
