well thats too bad that you dont like god forbid perp because i think they are very well arranged, I didn't like them at first but it grew on me very quickly. I have been listening to them for years now and there new cd was very impressive. Any one that wants to know how Dimmu are live, well you really need to go and find out because it is so worth it, fuckin epic! I got a new appreciation after i saw them last time they were in van and holy fuck, when you've got vortex doing his vocals and spitting blood in your face... well if you go you'll see what i mean! Unfortunately I am broke at the moment and will not be there but i would go if i could \m/ - Fri, 23 Jul 2004 10:29pm

Yeah, I do hear that God Forbid is good but they just don't do much for me sadly. Guess I'm too elitist when it comes to death metal. But yeah, Dimmu is a great band to see live, as I was at that same show. But I think we can all agree that Otep lick the hairiest part of a monkeys crack. - Sat, 24 Jul 2004 7:51am

who the hell is Otep? Heard about them for so long...

Meh, Dimmu is ok, I can't stand the drumming though. saw them with Cryptopsy a few years ago. They should have got the 15 minute set instead of Cryptopsy. - Sat, 24 Jul 2004 12:04pm

Dimmu drumming is so triggerd and so pro tooled its like not evan real.

Its like the new Vital Remains. All the drumming is pro tooled. They take 5 secs of trigger track and loop it. There live drummer whos one of the fastest blasters out there(Tim Yeung, ex Hate Eternal),can't evan play the speed of that cd. - Sat, 24 Jul 2004 1:27pm

using ProTools rarely mean someone takes 5 seconds of track and loop it. Pretty much all metal drummers who are triggered into Pro Tools will play the actual tracks all the way through and then an engineer has the ability to go in and either resample hits for different drum sounds, or nudge mistakes around slightly. This way if a drum is hit slightly off for instance in a double kick section, the engineer can 'fix' the mistake. Sure someone can go cut n pasting drum tracks around, but I gaurantee most metal bands arent doing this due to first The Time it takes to do it properly, and secondly, its very noticable most of the time. Ive discussed this in depth with Andy Sneap recently actually, as we are currently using triggered system through a Pro Tools rig in Zero Gravity. What you are thinking is a common misconception that people 'assume' to be true, but isnt, at least not in metal.

As far as using Pro Tools to speed things up.. cmon now.. then what, speed up all the riffs? re-write the song? Ive seen video of Derek Roddy practicing on his trig kit and he is FAST. Get into a studio, fire a up a click track, and any half decent 'pro' metal drummer will have little problem keeping the speed consistent. A schooled jazz drummer can play faster than any metal drumming Ive ever heard on any album without the tiggers.

Pro Tools help keep a drummer consistent, not better.

Well Mike in the new Vital Remains it does mean they looped it. i'm looking for the web page where i read about it. when i find it i'll send you the link...

And roddy only triggers his kicks by the way...

I have talked to people who have seen Vital Remains live recently and YES they do play the songs live slower. So yes they did speed up the riffs for the cd. - Sun, 25 Jul 2004 8:49am

#2. (I'm Going To Get In Trouble For This One) There's Way Too Much Editing Going On These Days In The Studios. Not All We Hear On Record Is What Was Played. Even Some Of The Records You Guy's Are Talking About On This Very Forum! I've Seen It First Hand! You Can Take Somebody That Doesn't Even Play Drums And Make Them Sound Like A God. You Can Fix Bass Drums Or Entire Drum Parts That Fell Apart During The Recording, You Can Play The Kick Drum In Half Time And Go Back And Add The Other Kick Notes By Hand, And The New Big Thing Is "Punching In" To Achieve More Consistent Tempos. Why Do Most Metal Musicians Write Music They Can't Even Make It Through In One Take Or Make It Through It At All! And How Could You Be Proud Of Something That You Know Deep In Your Heart That Didn't Really Play??????? Anybody That Knows Me Knows That I'm Really Against Punching In And Editing Drum Parts. I Had Too Punch The Black Seeds Record Because I Had Two Days To Learn And Record Seven Songs. I Wish I Could Have Had The Time To Learn The Music And Write Some Good Drum Parts. Maybe Then I Would Have Been More Satisfied With The End Result, Anyway. I Know Of One Recording (Which Is Mentioned On The Forum As Being "Some Of The Most Extreme Drumming Ever!") That The Infamous Drummer Came In Played Four Bars Of Every Type Of Blast And Double Bass Beat Known To Man, Along With Various Fills. The Entire Record Was Assembled By Looping The Drum Parts Together With Pro Tools! Yea, That's Brutal. If Something Doesn't Sound Humanly Possible To Play, You Have To Say To Yourself That It Probably Wasn't. You Really Get A Good Idea Of How Drummers Really Play By Seeing Them Live. You Can't Fix Anything Then. - Sun, 25 Jul 2004 9:02am

That truly disgusts me. Makes sence now why Black Seeds sounded so wrong, same drum parts over and over. Fuck, is metal becoming like Techno and Hip-Hop? All samples and loops? The Vital Remains thing I totally believe, since Tony Lazario is credited with guitar, bass, and all drums. Considering he's a guitarist first and formost, It made no sense to me why he was such a good drummer. All the credits on Dechristianize are given to 2 guitar players and a vocalist. Man, this is just plain wrong. - Sun, 25 Jul 2004 9:18am

Just about all pro metal drummers use Pro Tools in some form or another. ( they call it 'industry standard' ) Punching in is common, yes, and fixing mistakes for consistency isnt so bad, but recording parts and looping them is just bad. If Vital Remains are really doing that then that is just cheesy. Most all good drummers are slightly inconsistent and a recording can really shine if one just fixes a few small things.. but to loop entire tracks in songs and speed up the riffs? As a guitarist Id be embarassed to speed up a riff artificially. Of course with some bands thats part of their style/sound of the genre they play, but in metal like Vital's its just shameful.

As for Roddy.. see now there's a drummer who is probably capable of humanly making a song sound killer without Pro Tools. It doesnt surprise me he couldnt play Black Seeds with the time frame he had, but my point is, yah punching in is common and can save alot of expensive time re-tracking songs that are partially correct, but Id think more like play to a certain point, until its perfect, catch your breath, then do the next section till its perfect. I guess some producers just wont stoop to such levels, although if you listen to the consistency on an album like the latest ArchEnemy ( AndySneap recorded ) I dont think its drumming is inhumanly played at all, but it is very inhumanly consistent, there's definate tweaking and fixing going on.

Has anyone ever played with Pro Tools? Id hate to be the poor sucker who has to sit there editing metal drum fills all day long.

I wonder if Kataklysm had to pro tool their new album much. - Sun, 25 Jul 2004 10:31am

And then there's Jeff of Acting Ensign....need I say more.....Spence: What the heck you been up to? Actually I guess we're supposed to be talking about Dime-Burger here. I think, M.T.W.G., that D.B. should've taken the fall (instead of Krisiun) at that Van. gig, so that Cryptopsy could play for an hour and then Krisiun for an hour before the dance kids came in at 11pm. - Sun, 25 Jul 2004 11:10am

Ahhh yes, that too, fucking damn Dance Kids, and how about waiting in the line-up well into the time when the show should have STARTED! Arrrgh, then we 'slept' at Denny's, then it started snowing in the morning. Heh, everyone in the group was in a bitchy mood the next day.

Apparently the bouncers were being dicks that night because there was a shooting at that same bar the week prior to the Cryptopsy show. That night was my birthday and I thought I was about to experince the birthday of a lifetime, but as we stood outside and the clock approached 9 (and the ticket said "Doors at 8"), I knew something shitty was up. Ah well, I got in in time for the start of Cryptopsy's 4 song set, and I stood directly in front of the stage the whole time. I remember turning around and seeing people still waiting outside while they played. I also remember Krisiun sitting at the bar looking extremely upset. ahahaa and at the end of the show when Dimmu's road crew pointed out the promoter in the midst of the crowd, and told everyone there that it was his fault that the night was all fucked, I thought I was about to witness the lynching of the century. But alas, I traded my ticket stub straight across for a Corpse ticket, and saw them play at Studebaker's a month later with Abuse. For free. - Mon, 26 Jul 2004 11:42am

SO Otep cancelled, and SOULSCAR are in! Fuckin A! eh. - Tue, 27 Jul 2004 9:23am

Yup, that was fucking hilarious! Not 5 minutes before the phone rang, I was talking to Igor*soulscar drummer* about the cancelled Otep and Godforbid, and he said "fuck man, dimmu is my favourite band, I'd do anything to get that spot, I wish I could play that fucking show" then 5 minutes later the phone rings and he starts freaking saying "we're playing with mother fucking DIMMU BORGIR!!!!"

His drums got rechromed or something, so they were completely apart.
He had an hour to be there, so we all ran to the jam room and threw that shit togeather just in the nick of time!

Who would have thought I diddn't have to sit through Otep, AND I got to witness one of the hugest flukes I have ever been around for in my life!!!!!

Soulscar ripped it up too, the dissappointed crowed booed as they took stage as they saw them as "just some locals" i'm sure, but soon after Soulscar's audio asskicking was underway, the crowd went from disgruntled arm crossing, to psychotic hair whipping and flailing!!

It was quite apparent that the crowd was pleasntly impressed, and IMO - alot better than Otep anyday!

Huge congrats to Soulscar!!!

Dimmu was good as well by the way! ;) - Tue, 27 Jul 2004 5:11pm
