To promote Fernwood we are putting together a Fernwood Compilation CD (working title is - It Came From Fernwood). A jury of community members (as determined by the Fernwood Community Centre and others) will choose 15-17 tracks which will be included. You will need to own the rights to the song (and the recording) and live in Fernwood (the exact criteria will be sorted out over the next couple of weeks). If you are from Fernwood (or part of your band is) then check in with the Fernwood Community Centre (381-1552) and ask for James. The CD mastering and duplication is being sponsored by the Fernwood Community Centre and will be released at Fernfest on Sat Aug 28 at the Fernwood Community Centre. A great way to promote the Fernwood Community and get your music out there at the same time. Please pass on the word as the selection process will close in late July. - Fri, 25 Jun 2004 7:27am

I hear that James Kasper is involved in this CD and that "submissions" will be graded by some sort of jury, just like the M Power awards. Is this true? - Tue, 20 Jul 2004 12:11pm

not at all - rather than any form of grading the attempt is to have the jury make sure that the cd is as representative of Fernwood musciians as possible - as far as I am concerned no track would be not included because of any kind of grading - a track may not be accepted because there were too many tracks of a certain type of music - we are still very much looking for more tracks - any suggestions? - Tue, 20 Jul 2004 4:16pm

Who said that? It will, however, be interesting to see just how well represented Fernwood will actually be on this CD with several internationally known artists residing there whom, I guessing, will have neither inclination nor opportunity to participate. We will see, won't we. - Thu, 22 Jul 2004 2:07pm

He's a fucking broken record is all. He cleverly attempts to not make it look like bitching with a thin veil of 'concern'. SSDD. - Thu, 22 Jul 2004 11:58pm

International stars, national stars, fernwood stars, bring 'em on. we want them all. but we can't put them on the record if they don't give us their CD. yes, just like the Island Music Awards...and The Junos...And The Grammys...and any other compilation CD. Thanks to everyone who submitted. It will definitely be a great album. - Fri, 23 Jul 2004 5:11pm

scott calls it as he sees it - rare and refreshing in my opinion - the great thing about a compilation is that other cds can be done - Sun, 25 Jul 2004 11:39pm

I'm wondering, why Fernwood? I don't even know where Fernwood starts and ends; is Logan's officially in Fernwood? And even though I live in Colwood I practice (and perform live) almost exclusively in Fernwood and its environs. So would an old Langwood based fart like me be eligible? I'm all for promoting local music and all but this one has me a bit puzzled. Also, who is behind this venture, er, financially. Is it yet another child of "government funding"? One thing's for sure; when it comes out I will be listening to it carefully. Nu? - Mon, 26 Jul 2004 11:01am

Fernwood, officially, is framed by Cook St, Pandora Ave, Shelbourne St, & Hillside Avenue.

Fernwood Community Centre Society (a non-profit agency) is financially sponsoring this project and will (hopefully)recoup costs through CD sales. FCC has always made it a mandate (and we have made a more ambitious push lately) to support artists in the community through the All Ages Show Committee, the Fernwood album, inviting Fernwood artists to perform at our special events such as Fern Fest, etc. If you want to help us out, we need to get the word out about our 25th Anniversary Gala coming up in August, which includes a benefit at The Belfry August 18 (Tix @ Belfry & FCC. Door Prize: $3400 handcrafted skin-on-frame kayak with paddle & lifejacket)...and...the 9th Annual Fern Fest Aug.28 in Stevenson Park (behind FCC), at which the "It Came From Fernwood" CD will be released. Thanks in advance for your support!

re: artist criteria for the CD, I think that any performer who has been a mainstay performer in Fernwood would qualify, such as yourself Zipp, Carolyn Mark, Clay George, Dan Weisenberger, etc... - Mon, 26 Jul 2004 8:01pm

I beg to argue. but he is selling original material, for next to nothing, he said it has taken years to come up with it, but I think he kinda ripped it off. either way he likes beer, and boobs. - Thu, 12 Aug 2004 9:30pm
