Bryn User Info... | Dave Schulthise dies at 47 BY DAN DELUCA Knight Ridder Newspapers PHILADELPHIA - (KRT) - Dave Schulthise, 47, who as Dave Blood played bass in the 1980s punk-rock band the Dead Milkmen, died Wednesday in Westchester, N.Y. His body was found at the home of friends with whom he was staying, said his brother, Joe Schulthise. "This morning, Dave Blood is no longer with us," Mr. Schulthise's sister, Kathy, wrote on the band's Web site. "David chose to end his life. He left a note that said ... he just could not stand to go on any longer." The Philadelphia-based band - Mr. Schulthise, singer Rodney Klingerman (stage name: Rodney Anonymous), guitarist Joe Genaro (Joe Jack Talcum), and drummer Dean Sabatino (Dean Clean) - formed in 1983, and with albums such as "Big Lizard in My Backyard (1985), "Beelzebubba (1988), and "Metaphysical Graffiti (1990), established a national reputation as punk's merry pranksters. Their hits included "Bitchin' Camaro" and "Punk Rock Girl," whose video was an MTV staple. "Along with the Hooters and Cinderella, they were the most successful Philadelphia band of their era," said Howard Kramer, curator at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, who worked for the band's management company. The Milkmen's albums typically sold more than 100,000 copies. The band toured incessantly, driving to all-ages gigs all over the country in a converted ambulance. ""Big Lizard was a rite of passage for a lot of kids because the Milkmen were clever, and never too serious," Kramer said. "Dave was a great guy," said Sabatino, Mr. Schulthise's rhythm section partner. "We roomed together on tour quite a bit. He could be very serious, but he really enjoyed being on stage and playing." Last year, a CD of the Milkmen's early work, "Now We Are 20, and a video compilation, "Philadelphia in Love, were released. But since the band's breakup in 1995, Mr. Schulthise had struggled "with what he wanted to do," Sabatino said. The Temple University graduate, who was a Ph.D. candidate in economics at Purdue University before becoming a musician, studied Serbo-Croatian culture at Indiana University. He moved to Serbia in 1998 to teach English, but returned home to live with his parents in Ridley Park, Pa., during the NATO bombing of the former Yugoslavia. In an interview in 1999, he vowed "to experience the rebuilding of a country." Mr. Schulthise never did return, and his friend Sheila Sullivan said he had been depressed since his mother, Margi, died of cancer in January. "The last year was just very hard for him," Sullivan said. Mr. Schulthise is survived by his father, David; brothers Joe and Kurt; and sister Kathy. A memorial service is planned for later this month. Details will be available at http://www.deadmilkmen.com. --- - Thu, 11 Mar 2004 6:10pm

Bryn User Info... | Yeah, it's surprising and sad that someone whose music was so light-hearted would have such an opposite path to their life. - Thu, 11 Mar 2004 6:58pm

hardoff User Info... | I can understand his decision, he exercised one of the only true freedoms we have left is this sick world. The Dead Milkmen were a postive influence in my life, but it's kinda hard to laugh when you see a limo drive by a homeless person, or see a legless landmine victim child on the news. I'm an Atheist, but i still believe he's in a better place. - Fri, 12 Mar 2004 7:46am
