Pot makes me write songs and guitar licks very very well... If I ever remember to write the songs down! but, as for playing guitar, anything above funky little chord progressions, I am total crap, although its fun at the time! - Thu, 11 Mar 2004 4:02pm

Record what you are playing and then see if you play better. For years I swore I played guitar and sang better high, then I finally got a decent homestudio set up, and one day recorded one of these "brilliant" sessions. I have never played high (to record) again. It was utter shit. Seriously. - Thu, 11 Mar 2004 5:54pm

I think that drugs can help unleash creativity that would otherwise be difficult to tap, but that your straight mind is a better judge of the value of what you might create on drugs. - Thu, 11 Mar 2004 7:01pm

Yes they can. Pot with espresso (hippie speedball) is good at times. A full bottle of wine (or two) 10 minutes before recording has proven genius in a few recordings. Coke is a joke in my opinion, good in sex only. Heroin is ok for clean jazz or folk sounds but distortion and high volumes are irritating. Meth ok good for developing speed haha, just dont get hooked. Mushrooms or Peyote never did anything for me musically. I played once on acid and every time the keyboard player hit a bad note I thought he was Satan. Seems like every jam where everyone is drinking beer, they always end up playing cover tunes, very annoying. Im sure there is no perfect formula that fits everyone. I found mine and it doesnt include drugs or alcohol every time I play. To me they are potential tools that need respect. We all know what happens when drugs get out of control in someones life, creativity and playing ability goes to hell. If this type of thing works for you it can be musically addicting. If that happens I suggest you never use those same substances any other time in life but preferably learn to do without. A burnt brain is of no use except maybe further experiments. Be careful. - Fri, 12 Mar 2004 12:41am

Well we all remember that Zak Wilde who played with Ozzy years ago. Great talent, good looks and no limits seen for the future of this guys career. Then he discovered cocaine and a collection of Village People LP's. Well it was rock bottomsville from there. All night parties, male prostitutes, 7-11 hamburgers by the dozen, as well as every abused subsubtance known to mankind snorted off these very same Albums. After years of abuse Zak changed his name to ROSS B AY, formed Self Inflicted and has continued to slide ever closer to his self made hell. So to answer your question yes drugs help guitarist acheieve greatness, its the Village People that should be avoided as I suspect they are true messengers of Lucifer himself...... - Fri, 12 Mar 2004 8:09am

The people I know seem to agree that listening to music is often better appreciated while under the influence, but obviously people tend to disagree more on the topic of whether it enhances playing. My opinion is that it might help get the imagination going during the writing process.

I'm a real sucker for Reggae music, which obviously contains a lot of tokin', and almost all songs are about the ganja. I think perhaps the jamaicans use so much that its a part of their normal state.

Chances are, if I *feel* stoned while I'm playing, I'm probably gonna fuck it up somewhere; Whereas if I happen to be high already and get into some cool riffs, it usually does tend to sound pretty well done; I might do things I would otherwise think are too strange or difficult.

I've noticed from my own usage of substances, is it seems to depend totally on how accustomed one is to using drugs while playing. Since I don't always smoke while playing, I find it a bit more difficult. Other friends of mine are more familiar doing both seem to have almost no issue with it whatever.

Somewhat stereotypically I suppose, a lot of Jazz musicians seemed to have no issue with it what-so-ever. I've heard tell that for Satchmo it was mandatory. - Fri, 12 Mar 2004 11:00am

Gotta agree with lonemonk on this one. With my own drug experiments I've found that playing stoned becomes easier with practice. However, you can easily overdo it which is why I'm careful how much I indulge in when playing live. When my band rehearses, sometimes we smoke too much weed and it screws us up. You have to learn what works for you. For instance, it may not be the best idea to try ecstasy for the first time and then play live. I guess it's best to experiment, in the beginning, in a consequence-free environment. - Sat, 13 Mar 2004 12:36pm

I don't use any hard drugs and I very rarely drink, but I used to always smoke weed when I'd write and play. I'd smoked on a fairly consistent basis for about twelve years.

I've been weed free for just about four months. It has really been an eye opener for me. In all honesty, I don't think I'll go back...for a while. Productivity has noticeably increased in every facet of my life, including playing/writing music.

I totally think pot is great for a variety of reasons and I've really enjoyed my time with it, but my body and my mind sure feel a lot better since I've stopped. - Thu, 18 Mar 2004 5:18am
