69 User Info... | As far as I'm concerned, Randy California is the greatest unknown guitar player of all time. I bet you don't even know who he is, do you? Do a search engine on his name and you'll see what you've been missing. - Tue, 17 Feb 2004 2:04pm
Robnoxious User Info... | Randy Hansen is another cool relatively unknown. Stuck doing Hendrix tributes. I have a solo album of his thats pretty cool. Does a wicked cover of I Wanna Take You Higher by Sly and the Family Stone. Living players I have to say : Al DiMeola, Allan Holdsworth, Steve Vai, Jeff Loomis, Steve Morse, Yngwie Malmsteen. Lots more as well. Might not really like some of these guys but they all make me say "Holy F*ck" with their ability. - Tue, 17 Feb 2004 2:09pm
69 User Info... | By the way, I forgot to mention that when Randy California was only 15 & 16 years old, he played in a band w/Jimi Hendrix in NYC. When Hendrix was moving to London, he asked Randy to come with him (for the J.H. Experience) but his parents wouldn't let him as he was only 16! - Tue, 17 Feb 2004 2:12pm

Troutbreath User Info... | Get a Mississippi John Hurt LP (you remember those big vinyl platters?) and then try to figure out how you can play a lead, rhythm and base line while singing, all at the same time. Then come back here and tell me why he shouldn't show up on at least one of your lists. In no particular order: Mississippi John Hurt John Renborn Bert Jansch Django Rhinehart John Fahey The guy I met Hitchhiking in Arizona The guy who walked from upstate New York and I met in Nelson BC Mark Knofler Ry Cooder Lester Flatt Carlos Santana Yeah, I know that's more than ten but why stop there Dick Betts Paco de Lucia I could go on............. - Wed, 18 Feb 2004 6:49am

aleris User Info... | Well I don't know all that much about guitar players, or very many. So my opinion isn't all that valid. That being said, I'll vouch for Joe Satriani, Brian Setzer, Dimebag Darrel (my inspiration to finally try and teach myself to play guitar), whatever the name is of the guitar player in Queen (no matter my opinion of the band as a whole), and others that I forget because where I am right now, The Beatles are being played really loud and it's hard for me to think when there's music blasting out of a speaker right above my head. Oh and Zac Wilde's really good too, but as for being among the best guitar players in the world, I think that may be over-rating him a little. That could actually be said about everyone I've listed, with the probable exception of Joe Satriani. Hey who knows, the best guitar player in the world could be some guy that nobody's ever heard of. - Wed, 18 Feb 2004 3:18pm
greatestatguitar User Info... | yah thats true - Wed, 18 Feb 2004 5:06pm
Zippgunn User Info... | Well I like Troutbreath's list best so far. For me I guess it has to be Jimi with Robert Fripp, John McLaughlin, Frank Zappa, and George Harrison personal faves from my formative years. Guys you've never heard of who are completely unique: Derek Bailey Bill Harkleroad (aka Zoot Horn Rollo) Davey Graham Pete Cosey Sonny Sharrock Eugene Chadbourne Albert Lee Jerry Donahue Richard Thompson Elliot Sharp Fred Frith Henry Kaiser and there's more I'm sure. All of these guys are masters and none of them are "guitar gymnasts". About half of this list have appeared on at least 50 albums. look 'em up on the All Music Guide. You'll be glad you did (unless Yngwie is your idea of a master guitarist) P.S. Randy California is great too. Listen to any of the records he did with his band Spirit. - Wed, 18 Feb 2004 9:18pm
Dr.V User Info... | Steve Stevens and Adrian Belew - Thu, 19 Feb 2004 3:44am
Cordova Bay User Info... | Okay... I'll bite. No particular order... Willie Nelson Peter Green Mark Knofler Robbie McIntosh Bonnie Raitt George Benson Lindsey Buckingham (2nd FleetwoodMac'er - must mean something) Johnny Winter Glenn Campbell Dan Lanois Jeff Beck Keith Richard Rory Gallagher Jimi Hendrix Jimmy Paige Django Reinhardt Otis Rush Buddy Guy Eric Clapton Carlos Santana Duane Allman Elvin Bishop Gee... a lot more blues guys than I expected... oh and without too much criticism (I hope) I should add David Gogo ;) - Thu, 19 Feb 2004 7:54pm
Fools in Love User Info... | The Ventures, guy who played with elvis (presley), that wacky player from tom waits band who plays that really wacked out solo on costello's Spike album (someone help me here), Carlos Santana (never heard someone make the guitar sing quite like that) BB King (my first concert in 1973), Jeff Beck, Steve Howe (YES), Hendrix, Clapton, Page, Harrison, Lennon (not for his technique but for his soul), Chet Atkins, Bruce Cockburn (his early acoustic stuff - hated his electric stuff), guitar players from XTC, lots of great rythmn guitar players too (thinking fo the side man for BB King), that guy from White lines has some great sounds and chops, Wes Montgomery... have to stop now.... - Thu, 19 Feb 2004 10:23pm
Isolation Ride User Info... | Tom Farrow of Victoria. - Fri, 20 Feb 2004 3:17am
Zippgunn User Info... | Hey, Fools in Love, I think you're talking about Marc Ribot. He learned everything he knows from Robert Quine, another great squonk-meister. Knopfler is a poor (rich?) man's Richard Thompson. And don't get me started on Dave "the pain of the universe is in my guitar" Gogo. IMO he doesn't make the top 10 on the ISLAND. - Fri, 20 Feb 2004 8:45am
lonemonk User Info... | Jimi and Frank Zappa for me. - Fri, 20 Feb 2004 8:56am
rotten User Info... | Randy Rhoads would have to be the greatest guitar player of all time. He did more in such a short time span before he died than most people could deam of doing in a life time. when you think of a guitar icon its Randy Rhoads, he didnt want fame or fortune he just wanted to play music and more important learn as much as he could about playing guitar, and who knows what he would be doing now. Before he died he wanted to quit Ozzy and go to music school because he loved music not being famous. And now he is immortalized forever. - Fri, 20 Feb 2004 10:47am
Danny Silverfish User Info... | Yeah , he would take classical lessons in every city they hit while on tour.Playing guitar was more like a religion for that guy, love him or hate him he was/is pretty inspiring - Fri, 20 Feb 2004 11:37am
Charles User Info... | Nice to see there's notice and respect for Randy in the way too many talk about Jimi. No one posted Prince for best guitarist. What"s up with that? Prince rules! - Fri, 20 Feb 2004 5:26pm
Fools in Love User Info... | squonk miester - great term - I am a huge fan of players who can go outside (like Monk) and end up pulling it together at teh end of a solo - and I can't believe I forgot Stevie Ray Vaughn and I agree with Randy R as well- I am also impressed with the guitar player for the latest Ammiee Mann record - I love players who really know how to use the guitar to add amazing color to a recording, Gilmour too - yikers - there are just too many... - Fri, 20 Feb 2004 6:36pm
Danny Silverfish User Info... | Iam really not a fan of prince but I have to admit he does have guitar abilities - Fri, 20 Feb 2004 7:04pm
Perpetual_Burn User Info... | Most people here are posting thier favourate guitarists because of the songs they wrote. Being a wicked guitar player and being a wicked songwriter are 2 completely seperate things. For example; Kirk Hammet was a great player right(meh)? He didn't write barely anything. That was Lars and James. He started writing for Load and Reload, and where did that get him....*shudders* - Fri, 20 Feb 2004 10:29pm
Rollerballs User Info... | Tony Iommi Randy Rhoads -end of story. guitar solo's suck - Sat, 21 Feb 2004 7:03am

KnifeGhost User Info... | Rollerballs, have you ever heard Crazy Train? Rhoads invented the metal solo..... - Sat, 21 Feb 2004 8:24pm
Fools in Love User Info... | I saw a great player in Lenny from the band Winston last night - he was doing some wacky and outside stuff with his sounds - which is great to see in a melodic power pop band - often the best guitar players are the ones who can create emotionally as well as technically - lots of speed players out there without the ability to interpet - Sun, 22 Feb 2004 6:19am
ONION User Info... | El Hefe, Dave Navarro, Slash. - Sun, 22 Feb 2004 5:33pm
Dano User Info... | Not my favourite player, but my fav solo; David Gilmour - Another Brick In The Wall - Sun, 22 Feb 2004 5:48pm
Instrument of Karma User Info... | I think everyone should lend an ear to Gary Moore, outside of his Thin Lizzie stuff. Serious Irish blues\rock. and the second axe-grinder from Manowar. - Tue, 24 Feb 2004 6:17am
Rob User Info... | Did anyone see that post in 'found on web" last week. If so, im sure youll agree, the best guitarist ever would have to be FRED DURST!! - Tue, 24 Feb 2004 8:33am
Perpetual_Burn User Info... | Yeah, David Shankle from Manowar was great. Brothers in metal we are! - Tue, 24 Feb 2004 9:46am
