Hey, my band, Making Mischief, are recording a small cd in Tswassen in a couple weeks. Does anyone know how to reproduce CD's of good quality for as cheap as possible? Do we have to buy five hundered to get a deal or is there another way? Also, are there any places to record in Victoria that offer good deals? Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

You talkin CDRs or actually pressed cds? The later is cheapest in the thousands, so if you go that route you'd best be selling hella... and i don't think that there's anywhere on the island to do it. CDRs however are pretty cheap and you can print out labels to put on em so they don't look _as_ welfare. - Wed, 4 Feb 2004 3:45pm

LOOK NO FURTHER! I highly recommend Gilles at Millimotor Productions. He offes a SWEET deal (probably the best deal in town) for recordings and does great work (many satisfied customers). He also knows the best places to have CDs made. You can call Gilles at: 704-6978 or email him at: [email protected] - Wed, 4 Feb 2004 5:56pm

Kyle @ Spawner Records is a broker for Sonrise, or something like that. Might be worth dropping him a line to ask about it.

I would recommend silver discs over CDR's as they have a way lower fail rate. Remember a lot of cheap CD players don't like to play CDR's (I found this out the hard way). If you make 500 silver discs it's almost the same price as 500 CDR's anyway. - Thu, 5 Feb 2004 10:52am

Lonny Koch At South Island Studios...did the Bong CD..it sounds great. Lonny has great ears and really nice gear..cheep prices and a good space to work in...
Pacific Music handeled our reproduction and kinda screwed it up..they gave us a 12-15 day turnaround time and we gave them over 30 days and they still couldn't get the CDs to us on time! Remember production schedules are basically fantasy, so learn from our burn!

Here's a question sorta relating to this /topic. Do people find that a lot of studios locally charge way too much to produce/pre-produce CDs, or is it the bands fault for not having their shit together beforehand? (eg. not bring in/laying down basic tracks before hand, and not using the studio to do touchup work/overdubbing?!?). Reason I ask is someone mentioned that there's nowhere cheap enough that does professional work. And yes, Ratsnest Studios is awesome to record demos at due to the price, but are there others?!? - Sat, 7 Feb 2004 12:59pm

Nowhere cheap enough that does professional work???? Well how cheap is cheap? If bands "bring in their basic tracks" then of course the studio has to deal with whatever the band brought in to it and remember, you can't polish a turd. I'm $25/hr., Ratsnest is even cheaper (I believe). That's CHEAP! In the '70's when I first started hanging around studios the charges were more like $65/hr. and it took forever to get going; a single cost about $1000-$2000 to record back then. I currently get album length sessions outa here for $500 all the time. Mostly I can do it because a) I insist that the band is prepared both in knowing their tunes and in having their gear in top working order and b) I've learned how to work fast. Remember a good vocal mic costs about $1500 and all the gear involved to record properly can run you up to $100,000. It has never been cheaper to record than it is right now. - Sat, 7 Feb 2004 1:41pm

Actually Apex mics are really decent. Nice clean sound, I was impressed. I don't think spending big money on equipment is really the way to go. - Sat, 7 Feb 2004 3:07pm

Well, Apex mics are fine, as are my Behringers, Rode etc. but I've found that a lot of people insist on having a really good mic for vocals, like a Neumann. I've actually had people pass on my studio for the sole reason that I had no Neumann (these are often the same people that complain about how expensive I am!). The cheapest Neumann is about $1500, a used U-87 runs about 2 G's. - Sun, 8 Feb 2004 1:11pm

Full Circle Studios does absolutely amazing work for a very reasonable price. Daryl (sound engineer) is great to work with and puts out an amazing product. They have top of the line equipment and a beautiful recording space, too. They're recording Gorilla Monsoon and Fully Loaded right now. Check 'em out at http://www.fullcirclestudios.ca. - Sun, 8 Feb 2004 9:58pm

Those Apex mics pick up tons of sounds, nice clean sound too. I think they go for $225 for 2 mics, at least I think that's what Garry Brainless paid for them. - Mon, 9 Feb 2004 12:22am
