Message Board > Music Chitchat - Heavy > Punk scene in Victoria? |
T. Depression User Info... | I'm moving to Victoria in a couple months and was wondering what kinda punk scene there is in Victoria. I know there aren't any decent punk record stores...but how about punk-rock DJ nights??? Decent radio shows that play 70's punk, 80's hardcore, 60's garage or power-pop stuff? How about bands...anything decent? - Tue, 2 May 2006 3:20pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | All there is to know about the local scene can be found on the main page. Punk Rock DJ?!? Well a good show to preview the local scene is the Capital Rock City PODCast on The Zone. Lots of decent bands, depends what type of music you listen to. Listen to CFUV for a diverse take of shows. They're avaliable to listen to thru their website at http://cfuv.uvic.ca/. Who the heck goes to punk rock DJ nights?!? :) ...booze, hounds, HOCKEY!!! - Tue, 2 May 2006 5:40pm
jay brown User Info... | Theres tons of good bands here, Logans tends to be the place to go as far as bars go if you want the street scene kinda punk stuff. Lucky gets a bunch as well. Lots of all ages stuff as well. There are no punk rock dj nights anymore, I have helped put on a few of them at clubs in this city over the years and they are pretty hit and miss here. i think for the most part most of the punks would just as soon sit at home and drink beer and play their own albums instead. myka and fraser do a punk, crust, oi show on thursday nights that's damn good, it's at, http://www.chly.ca it is totally worth listening to. Record stores, well, ditch has a great selection for punk and metal, and so does Lyles place and if they dont have what you want Vancouver is only a ferry ride away. - Tue, 2 May 2006 6:34pm
T. Depression User Info... | Which store is Ditch? Where is it located? Yeah...I haven't heard a punk band from Victoria in years (other than The Hoosegow) that I dug. Everything in Victoria seems to have a heavy, metal influence...and I think The Dayglo Abortions were way to much of an influence on that town. Any bands doing anything different? How about some early styled punk stuff(not 2nd gen british, fashion punk shit)? Decent 80's styled hardcore? Power-pop? Garage-Rock? Lo-Fi shit-rock? I just wanna know what'd going down locally... - Wed, 3 May 2006 7:36am
T. Depression User Info... | How about a Victoria punk website...is there a site with band info, messageboards, etc??? - Wed, 3 May 2006 8:13am
_Griphin_ User Info... | Hmmmm.... punk bands? The Remanes, Alcoholic White Trash, The Shivs, Grey Army, Laying Waste, etc. - Wed, 3 May 2006 11:26am
darcy User Info... | If you are looking for some 80's style hardcore, I would definatly check out Wayne Powerman. First show on friday. http://www.myspace.com/waynepowerman . There is definatly some Germs, DOA style going on in there. - Wed, 3 May 2006 11:51am
Anonymous User Info... | victoria's scene these days seems to be focused more on youth crew-y hardcore. a weird phase, but the shows are pretty good. for this: http://groups.myspace.com/vihc - Wed, 3 May 2006 1:05pm
tyler User Info... | yeah the punk scene these days sucks major balls.its all like emo bands..with mall goths/punk audiences.there are a few good punk bands such as alcoholic white trash.but the band im in wayne powerman is hoping to somewhat bring the punk scene back too victoria!..yeah althought were only like 16 years..we can rock the fuck out..well in our minds at least no pussy ass screaming and whining just straight punk rock N roll..yeah party on - Wed, 3 May 2006 1:34pm
Brian VIHC User Info... | I don't think there are any youth-crew influenced bands in Victoria. And the last actual emo band I remember seeing here was Norman Bates Valentine. Oh and the website I have up is http://www.vanislehardcore.com Ignore that myspace crap. ha ha - Wed, 3 May 2006 5:00pm
Kimberleykaos User Info... | You've obviously found your way to this message board, and once you find yourself in this city, just come back to this message board, check the Up and Coming section, and the show listings selection, and see whats happening when you have the availibility. Head out to Logans, or Lucky, maybe and all ager somewhere, and enjoy. I love the scene for different styles of music here, and there is always something, even if it's not your usual...to enjoy. Where you coming from? Too bad you weren't here for Friday, there's a great show - ska style, at Legends, it's gonna rip. (Mad Caddies, One Drop, McGuillicuddies) Hope ya like Vic - Wed, 3 May 2006 5:05pm
Kimberleykaos User Info... | SWEET! That was my 666 th post! - Wed, 3 May 2006 5:06pm
Rawb User Info... | Yep, as far as a site for the bands and people to kibbitz about the "scene"--this is about it. As far as 80's influenced HARDCORE: http://akfortyseven.net This town has produced so many amazing bands with as divergent a cross-section of styles as you could want to see. For it's size I would wager it's been--nationally overlooked or not--the most important, vibrant music scene in the country since the early 80's. - Wed, 3 May 2006 7:03pm
Ty Stranglehold User Info... | When do you get here Tiemen? - Wed, 3 May 2006 7:15pm

Nik Olaz User Info... | Iskra is punk. BuryWhatsDead is punk. Just because they do not sound like the Sex Pistols doesn't make them not punk. - Sun, 7 May 2006 12:07am
Mutilashawn User Info... | hang the gutter punks. and the metal heads too while you're at it. - Sun, 7 May 2006 1:22am Edited: Sun, 7 May 2006 1:22am
ricky jak User Info... | srewwww this punk thang. There hasn't been any punk in Victoria since the early eighties! I'm in for the energy that a band might give off and Vic has some great energy. The above listed groups will all do it for you. Victoria has a great scene and always has..... I can walk downtown Vancouver and be alone the whole time. But in Vic i bump into great people all the time to chat whats new in music. Welcome to Victoria T-Depression, we are all one big family, young and old...... -ricky jak - Sun, 7 May 2006 6:20am
_Griphin_ User Info... | Sure there is, The Shivs is a good example (though I hate to mention any other bands, cause I'm bound to have some people disagree with what I post), but yeah, a ton of good bands aren't around anymore. - Sun, 7 May 2006 10:33am Edited: Sun, 7 May 2006 10:34am
Swingin' Joe User Info... | And The Keg Killers Biatch! - Sun, 7 May 2006 2:06pm
Brian VIHC User Info... | Nik, what are you talking about? Everyone knows that all punk has to sound the same, dress the same, and use the same stage antics. - Sun, 7 May 2006 4:00pm
T. Depression User Info... | So...I've been checking out all the bands people have been mentioned...and looking all over the place for decent stuff coming outa Victoria. Lotsa metal...and metal influenced shit...a buncha modern, so called "Hardcore", and a few bands playing in the Dayglo Abortions tradition of low-brow, scuzz-rock. So..is that what the Victoria scene is all about? How 'bout some bands that play smart punk-rock that isn't about getting fucked up, etc...any pop influenced, 70 styled punk? Raw 60's sounds? Crazy noise influenced shit? I there anything that isn't beer swilling, tattoo sportin', gutter punk...or kids apeing their fave video stars for the all-ages crowd? - Tue, 9 May 2006 11:25am
_Griphin_ User Info... | Oops, and Keg Killers and lots of other bands. Sigh, I really need to work on the demo website (http://members.shaw.ca/Griphin/vdrp/ come to think of it (sorry, I lose my focus). ...I'll take you down (down, down, down) - Tue, 9 May 2006 1:53pm

canon.docre User Info... | fuck that's funny. I always second guess people with full sleeves now, what their motivation to get them were. 'damn I'm going to look badass playing guitar up on stage ..' - Tue, 9 May 2006 5:07pm
Ty Stranglehold User Info... | The Beaumonts are a very 70's influenced punk combo here. Check The Mags too. Rod Iron Haulers do the whole dragstrip rawk thing really well. Sweathogz are cowpunks with slide guitars there's a lot of different shit going on. You just have to dig a bit to get to it sometimes. - Wed, 10 May 2006 12:32am
ricky jak User Info... | a few years ago the only people with sleeves where jail, navy, bikers or skinheads. now look around!!!! I hear what your sayin canon.docre i hear ya loud and clear. I just ordered my sleeve removal machine,,,, just kidding i like my arms. But my back piece really has to go. It's a beutiful sunset with a bald eagle flying in the sky, comeing over the hilltop is a Sherman Tank and in the field is a crowd of nazi soldiers zieg hailing. Quite a magnificent piece. But if you look really close, all the soldiers have clown faces. Hell Yeah! I do wonder what all you young tattooed dudes and doodets are gonna do in ten/twenty years when your old like me. - Wed, 10 May 2006 5:44pm
T. Depression User Info... | Shit...when did it become all "Punk-Rock" to get tottoos anyway??? None of my fave punk bands have tattoos. You want a punk-rock tattoo? Go get a a pink, penis swastika tattooed on your fucking neck. Forget arm sleeves...get a COCK sleeve of a family of panthers, holding hands. - Thu, 11 May 2006 5:58am

T. Depression User Info... | Ricky, I'm not in town yet...but I'll take you up on that pop when I get to town. Instead of meeting at a bar though...wear that tube top down to the skatepark, and we'll have a bowl joust...the winner gets the other guys vest wit da patches. Calgary Slashers with panther sleeves is hardcore...... sounds almost JaKer than JaK.... non the less i'm always into a bowl session. T. Depression User Info... | Yeah...we'll definitely have to hit up some bowl sessions...when I hit town. You guys haul the BBQ down there on Wednedsay nights...or just run to Save-On foods for cheap ass Sushi and Orange Juice? Either way, I'm in. I doubt I was one of those rippers you're speaking of...I've skated briefly a couple times in Vic in the past year, but I was pretty sketchy both times. As for lookin' new wave...I only wave-up when I got somewhere to be...it's hard to skate in those craaazy glasses... - Thu, 11 May 2006 8:42pm
