Someone was nice enough to post a Neo's album into the punk newsgroup. Who are the Neo's?!? One of the first Victoria punk bands (nice work remastering that Scott) and it sounds great!!!

Aahh...The NEos. At one point, acknowledged as THE fastest band on the planet. I kid you not. I think by the end of their run they had gotten the original set of material from theirt first album down to about a third of the length(!) Arguably Victoria's most world reknown group next to NMN, they helped put Victoria on the map.
To all you metalheads who think you need speed or cocaine to achieve Slayer-like intensity, yer fuull of beans. The NEos were 10x faster (and scarier IMO) and ironically, were straight-edge as fuck; I'm not sure they even did coffee...
Mario the drummer was a big inspiration for lots of today's players (John London, Ken Kempster) this ws just B4 The Infamous scientists dissolved and NMN really came into being. Funny, Mario was really into the doo-wop I beleieve and kept trying to work Motown into their 15 min+ set (?!) A quirk of nature that la....shoulda seen him play. Wow.

Actually I didn't remaster the CD, that was Mark Franklin's handiwork (talk about polishing a turd!). The Neos were more intense, more punk, faster, crazier, and louder than just about anybody before or since. The things these guys would do. Mario's drum stool, for example, was simply a piece of wood that he would balance his pelvic bones on; excruciatingly painful for more than 5 minutes. I saw them play a gig at Steve's house (guitarist) one summer. it was boiling hot, there was 75 or so kids there but it wasn't extreme enough; they got every electric heater they could find and lined them up in front of the stage so it was even hotter. It got so hot that, even with the heaters turned up full blast, the heaters just shut down and refused to turn back on. This is the stuff that legends are made of. And their influence was far reaching; Jello Biafra to this day counts them as one of the best punk bands ever. I saw the cover to their 2nd EP tacked to the wall in an Amsterdam record store once and when I asked where the record was the snotty little clerk told me that they only had the cover and even if they did have the record "you couldn't afford it". When I told him that I had, in fact, recorded the record and had 3 or 4 copies of it at home he did a complete 180 degree flip and started treating me like Phil Spector. Ah stardom. - Sat, 13 Dec 2003 11:27am

I did a bit of research, the 2 EPs posted on the newsgroup were: End All Discrimination 12" and Hassibah Gets the Martian Brain Freeze 7". I wonder if someone had both albums somewhere in the world and decided to rip them, or Mark decided to release it onto the net? - Sat, 13 Dec 2003 8:46pm

Actually Jason Flower has re-released them on CD on his Break Even label as well as a 7" that was a rehearsal called (I think) "Fight With Donald" or something (I would go check but my 7"s all got mixed up, and I have a LOT of 7's) - Sat, 13 Dec 2003 9:37pm

That's probably where this came from, both albums were on the same CD it seems. - Sun, 14 Dec 2003 9:03am

I work with Kevin. He's the nicest dude ever. He said he has a bunch of Neo's CDs at home as well as some of the other projects he was in...some MOC and MPA possibly. If anyone wants to buy one off him, I'll see if I can hook you up. Or he might come into the thread as I told him of it. Never know. - Mon, 15 Dec 2003 3:08pm

Just don't call him "Jerkface" Kev no more....that's a no-no.
I think Steve and Kev did the "Harvest of seaweed" project shortly after the Neos, then John London, Mr.Smith and I did "Sludge Confrontations." The material that he and London constructed defied descroiption really...was loud and fast at times but so harmonically dense, we never bothered with a bass player.Sorta "Natl.Geographic" non-linear, structres....with stream-of-conciousness" fully improvised vox atop (don't ask, please.) John was in the best form of his career I'd say....THis was before the whole long-hair, Black Flag-sound-like-Sabbath-now" phase. Kev is most likely the most brilliant composer none of you will ever hear as he is very much content to produce his art for himself. Greg Ginn/ Coltrane vibe...before I ever knew about Zappa or Sharrock. HE can really scare the puddin' outta ya if the mood strikes him tho'....watch out.
Our more memorable gigs were with BLack Flag (they HATED us) and all those times at the OAP or La HAcienda (Dan Beer HAS the LA HAcienda sign incidentally.) - Mon, 15 Dec 2003 6:53pm

I'll buy a Neos CD... then again, Kev should get Ditch records to sell some of those CDs. Mission of Christ?!? Strange, I actually saw one of there 7 inch records last night (as well as numerous other local 7 inch releases). If Kev has a mastered version of some of the MoC material, I'd also be interested in buying a copy of that too. - Tue, 16 Dec 2003 11:46am

Now that I've had time to think, he may have been saying they were tapes. All he told me was that he had some recordings, so I'm not sure.
Either way, I told him more about this thread when I saw him this morning, and he said he might come check it out tonight. - Tue, 16 Dec 2003 4:21pm
