Whilst reading the local paper, there was an article in regards to local radio and why people don't listen to it. The main reason, according to the article, was that more people are downloading and burning music.

So the question of the week is: Why don't you listen to local radio?!?

I'll start: I don't listen to local radio because I'm too busy either listening to local bands :) or CDs. But I do listen to local radio when I'm working (it's background noise in most cases).

Nuff said, comments?!? - Fri, 12 Dec 2003 10:40am

There's no classic rock stations here anymore, so it's the Van stations for me. I won't listen to anything other than Kansas. "Nuff said.... - Fri, 12 Dec 2003 10:49am

It is because the local radios play crap. Only good ones that I recieve are 99.9 (seattle) 92.9 (bellingham) and 101.1 (vancouver). - Fri, 12 Dec 2003 10:53am

I dont listen to local radio ( except some CFUV shows ) because I cant stand 90% of the mainstream pap that they try and shovel down your throat, ESPECIALLY the CanCon they force on you.

If I have to listen , Ill tune into 99.9 or 107.7 which are both american stations who actually have the balls to offend a few people in their quest to play decent music once in a while. - Fri, 12 Dec 2003 11:03am

CFUV has definitally opened my eyes to new types of music. I can name lots of shows just off the top of my head

The Disciples of Dr. Demento
Area of Refuge
Skanksters Paradise
Eclectic Jazz (that followed soundcheck?)
Skaterday Morning what ever it was called.....
SoundCheck
Stranglehold
minors revenge
Alive and Dread
Garage Grooves
Sounds Of Skunk - Fri, 12 Dec 2003 11:49am

CFUV is basically the only station I tune in to, with the exception of the occasional specialty show on other stations (ie. Young and the Restless on 107.7) simply because I find the majority of commercial stations repetitive and boring. They offer little variety in their content and quite frankly, I'm not all that interested in hearing the same kind of song hour after hour. Campus/community radio has given me a much broader view into music as a whole as well as its many different genres, as opposed to commercial radio which tends to be quite restrictive in the types of music it plays. - Fri, 12 Dec 2003 2:43pm

ska music is for homeless homos. if you have ever listened to ska music, you may as well go get a lifetime membership to a steam bath in west vancouver. - Fri, 12 Dec 2003 4:43pm

where did this anti-ska comment come from? It would appear that you sir, are a total idiot. the people in the thread were talking about radio stations, not ska or homeless homosexuals. If your going to send in randon obcene comments please join one of the many MSN boards dedicated to the ramblings of prepubecant skaters.
On topic, I've been able to find some realy cool radio stations off the internet. Pirate stations and what not. Radio is an awsome medium if done well. Sadly victoria has little to no concept of quality radio. - Fri, 12 Dec 2003 5:08pm

I was a massive tv addict. I'm glad to say that I also am mainly reading and listening to the radio. radio doesnt seem to give the same mind raping feeling as television. Who wants to have a "Kill your tv" party. We all get together, bring our sets and................ smash. - Sat, 13 Dec 2003 1:00am

I like ska, and I don't see why eveyone hates it. In 69 and earlier all the skinheads used to be into that shit. Now everyone hates it. If your talking about the 90s pop ska like Reel Big Fish and shit I can see where you are coming from. But nothing beats a good traditional ska song.

ps I am fucking hammered so I don't take responsibility for what I SAY - Sat, 13 Dec 2003 1:45am

yeah the original ska music was awsome. now I belive we are on to third wave ska. Completly diferant shit. Conpairing real big fish to the specials is kinda like conpairing linkin park to mushuga or conpairing the donna to souxie and the banshies. Give the quality stuff a listen before you bash the whole fucking genre. - Sun, 14 Dec 2003 2:50am

Only "local" radio i listen to is CBC. I guess i'm just not into the stuff that is often played on the radio, and if i am into it, chances are i own it and can listen to it through my hi-fi stereo, with cd quality as apposed to F.M. I have nothing against local radio, its great, but not my cup o' tea! - Sun, 14 Dec 2003 4:20pm

Honestly, i dont see whats wrong with 91.3. I mean hey, they might not always play the best music.. ok maybe not even that close to always, but i like how they are so activly promoting the local music scene. I dont listen to the radio for more then an hour or 2 each week, so i really cant say too much for which radio station is best etc.. but for the limited listening i do hear, local 91.3 works fine for me. - Tue, 16 Dec 2003 9:46am
