Message Board > General Chitchat > Sever radiation storm...right frickin' now! |
The Mad Subwoofer User Info... | Uh...just a quick note to let all you nightowls know to look up this eve. The largest solar flare EVER recorded lasted away from the sun a few hours ago and is headed directly for us. Storms like this in the past have knocked out entire provincial power grids (Quebec) and also treat us to some real purdy light shows. Check it out here; http://www.sec.noaa.gov/SWN/ - Tue, 28 Oct 2003 8:26pm

S.V. User Info... | I think this is facinating stuff! It really puts into perspective just how insignificant and fragile we humans are. Can you imagine the chaos if many of the worlds major power grids were disabled simultaneously...scary! Did anyone catch any auroras? - Wed, 29 Oct 2003 8:47am
The Mad Subwoofer User Info... | Well...not exactly. 'Spose the fresh air did me good tho'. I have seen them here in Fairfield just last year, during the meteor shower no less; that was quite the sight. Lotsa websites that will show you the aurora in real-time from satellites, which is all I managed. Those X-flares are the ones that wipe out satellites, knock out power grids, silence all radio and cell transmissions and also cause intercontinental flights to be delayed due to the radiation hazard. Those air routes are high enough that in a case like last eve, you'd recieve the equivelant of a years worth of chest x-rays. Serious stuff. Theoretically, a big enough one would just wipe away our atmosphere....>poof< Freaky and cool. - Wed, 29 Oct 2003 9:11am
Pierce User Info... | What exactly is a years worth of Chest xrays.... One? Maybe 2 a year, if not none! It is actually based on amount of xrays, last night if you were in a plane effected, it would be equl radiation to 100 chest xrays at once! - Wed, 29 Oct 2003 9:28am
RSBF User Info... | Christer was just leaving the studio last night and looked up to a freakish dark blood red sky with some interesting tracers and the appearance of what looked like sun rays (but dark red). he called me out so we walked back over into the dark because in the street lights you couldn't see it at all, and i noticed a lot of stars twinkling kinda strangely. VERY spooky, cool for Hallowe'en. it really looked like it was shining right down onto our house as if there were a large dome of some sort (well that's how he described it). crazinesses. - Wed, 29 Oct 2003 11:02am
_Griphin_ User Info... | I remember seeing about the solar flare activity on CNN, and apparently we're pretty safe from getting hit and knocking out power grids and stuff. Something to do with the angle of the earth in direct relation to the sun. http://edition.cnn.com/2001/TECH/space/04/04/solar.storm/index.html - Wed, 29 Oct 2003 12:58pm
The Mad Subwoofer User Info... | Yeah probably, but where's the fun in knowing that? Some day, sometime...it is quite concievable that some _seriously_ large X-class flare could hit us square on, blowing away our atmosphere like so much fluff; kind of exciting, no?Highly unlikely of course. Our magnetosphere is what shields us from the solar malestrom, brushes it aside but still, a big enough burst of plasma and... Hey, cool article? I subscribe to this site; http://www.spaceweather.com/ It sends me "bulletins" for when the major events happen so you can anticipate them or something...knowing when the aurora will occur is sort of nifty. This was Metchosin last eve; http://science.nasa.gov/spaceweather/aurora/images2003/29oct03/Buttnor1.jpg - Wed, 29 Oct 2003 2:14pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | Damn, I always seem to miss the Aurora :( Heck I lived in Sooke for years before they got the street lights in, and the coolest things I saw was clear skies, cold temperatures and a very bright full moon (turns night into a China Blue), or else a ton of stars in the sky (camping in the hills). - Wed, 29 Oct 2003 7:52pm
