Oi
We are a small, crappy little band (Fatal Error). We have been jamming 4-5 times a week for the past month and a half or so... We are now looking to record a demo, or something... Just get our music onto the web and maybe a demo CD or something... Does anyone in Victoria do this for VERY cheap (as we have a miniscule budget) or free(hehe)?
Any advice on going about this?

i just want to say i think fatal error is a cool name for a band.

oh yea, if you want to go super cheap you can always put your computer in the jam room, hang a mic and plug it into your comp. it, uh, works - Mon, 13 Oct 2003 8:29pm

Thanks a lot...

hehe... Ufortunately, us idiots already tried using a cheap $1.50 mic, and tried recording on the comp... Damn recording program only took 2 minutes of stuff... AND sounded like shit. I shoulda kept it, though... Hilarious...
Well, now I'm babbling!

no no man, you nead at least a $9.50 mic and some kinda good program to record with. I think we used cool edit pro. steal it off the internet. it's pretty good and has lots of filters and shit for cleaning up the sound a bit. - Mon, 13 Oct 2003 8:59pm

First, get a decent quality mic.
Then go to download.com and get some decent sound recording software/audio editing software.
Record the different instruments separately.
When recording drums, hold the mic about a foot behind the drummer's head, tune the toms to the lowest possible, put a pillow in the bass drum, & if you have a second mic put it in front of the bass drum. Record, & adjust this to your liking.
When recording bass/guitar, you can likely pick up a cheap adapter at radio shack that will plug into the mic port in your computer. I've never done this so I can't offer any advice further than that.
Haven't had any experience recording vocals, either, but just look it up on the net and try different methods and see what works best for you...
Then compile them all in the audio editing software you download (Sound Forge 6 is a fairly simple to use one) & you're good to go. - Mon, 13 Oct 2003 9:00pm

if you go to the audio section of this page and dig the new audio shit my band is called the badgers and those coupla songs were recorded just how i said. they're bad, but not *that* bad considering what we had. recording all the instruments seperately would deffinately sound more professional but to be honest i couldn't imagine recording anyway but live. I too am new to this shit though and you need professional help. - Mon, 13 Oct 2003 9:06pm

Ah what the hell...

Hey Dan, get ahold of Gary Brainless at Rats Nest studios (383-8679). I'm sure he'd be willing to record you guys (or any band, hint, hint :) for a reasonable price. Just ask anyone, he does good work. Anyhow, nuff said. - Tue, 14 Oct 2003 2:32am

And then there's my joint (Sea of Shit, plug, plug 474-8948) where, if you have your shit together, you can do like Bronze did and do a whole album length project for $300. This may be a bit out of yer budget but then if a three piece band can't afford $100 each for a demo... The upside is all the good mics, compressors etc. that really make a difference resulting in the band being able to concentrate on the performing rather than the recording. It all depends on what yer looking for in the recording; a demo to analyse yer material (the single mic/computer thing would be fine for that) or something you might concievably sell at a show (you'll need something better). - Tue, 14 Oct 2003 10:11am

fuck....without scott henderson..or gary brainless..hardly any bands from victoria..( hell...pretty much the whole island) over the last what 15 years plus wouldn't have been heard by anyone. these guys have always supported local bands that usually have little or no money..and repeatedly churn out pretty decent shit. um...in a weekend i may add. so while anyone with a computer can record a song with a shitty mic these days..get a paper route and save up for a half assed recording, not to mention you can learn a shitload from either of these two guys in the process....you'll be glad you did. trust me. - Thu, 16 Oct 2003 8:07pm

Problem is, finding some of those demos that were released, there's a TON of crucial music recorded over the last 20 years, and noone's doing anything about it. What's worse, some bands don't want people to hear their material, even though it rocks and it's just gathering dust!!! - Fri, 17 Oct 2003 1:00am

Well, for what it's worth I have every single master I've ever recorded since about 1984 so it's not like this stuff is lost or anything. Can't speak for Brainless etc. however. I don't give out copies without band permission, just in case you got to slavering over the prospect of getting copies of this stuff. A bunch of it will be available on the Victoria Punk history comp that's coming out someday (2 CD's and a book, I understand). - Fri, 17 Oct 2003 1:25pm

hehe, my first band ever recorded an album with Zippgunn back in 1992/93 in his basement. Scott was really cool to us newbies. The whole album cost pretty much fuck all and we did it in a couple days. Sounded pretty decent for what we paid. - Fri, 17 Oct 2003 1:41pm
