ticklefish User Info... | Do you have much experience in the recording end of things? Just asking, but obviously that is critical, or you need to know people who are highly skilled and be able to hire them. In general though, this town has tons of studios, how many of them make a living at it? I doubt many. It is like any other profession, work your tail off, study, learn, record as many people as you can to develop a resume. There isn't a single granting agency in arts or science that will give money to people without talent/experience/sound business planning. I have started on this path myself, and it is hard work. It costs a fortune to get the gear you need to run a pro studio. Noone is going to give away money to let you buy stuff unless you have a serious product to market (namely examples of stuff you have successfuly recorded). Those are my two bits. - Fri, 26 Sep 2003 9:38pm
Zippgunn User Info... | You are insane Hopefully you will recover but I am not hopeful. I have spent the better part of 20 years trying to build a pro quality recording studio/company that can take on any job and do it as well as anybody in the world. I have recorded hundreds of albums, many of which have been lauded by the fans of the bands that they are recordings of, many of which have been soundly cursed for their apparent defects. I have had a lot of fun. I have made a bit of a name for myself. I am still pretty much broke. Unless the creation of music is an absolute necessity in your life every day I would advise almost any other way to actually make a living. If you are not totally committed to music it will turn into a job fast and you will be fucked; you will learn to hate both music and musicians. You will die spiritually... Just my 2 cents... - Sat, 27 Sep 2003 1:11am
david foster User Info... | Don't listen to this guy. I'm a successful producer, originally from Victoria, who has produced everyone from Streisand to Celine Dion. I'm super rich, and have had a great life in music. - Sat, 27 Sep 2003 2:05am
[+} User Info... | i already have an audio/visual background so that's working for me i guess. i have a numerous amount of microphones and other PA gear, i need to find funding to buy a new G4 or G5 and protools. and from there all i need is the inputs to go into the comp. i'm wanting to go digital. definately. i have some experience with the mixing and mastering side of music on the boards, but digital is definately the way to go. thanks for the input. keep it coming. (question: how does aftermath recording studios stay open if they don't charge any money?) - Sat, 27 Sep 2003 11:09am
ROSS B AY User Info... | here's my expert advice dude - rock on man. rock the fuck on holmes...... - Sat, 27 Sep 2003 5:20pm
Livevic Scott User Info... | I do believe that aftermath is a project funded through a local comunity center, I believe the only reason they are eligiable for such grant is that they are youth baised and so only youth bands can use the facility. Or something like that. - Sat, 27 Sep 2003 7:46pm
[+} User Info... | so if i was an exclusive recording studio that only served a minority of the community, i'd be eligible? aight. - Sun, 28 Sep 2003 9:19pm
Livevic Scott User Info... | well maybe maybe not =).... Getting grant money to start a recording studio is like winning a lottery. Aftermath might not even be on a grant, or if they are they might be getting the grant as part of a youth center (I believe its associated with the Burnside Youth Center so the funding might be comming though the youth center and then being diverted to that project.. or something like that, I'm basing alot of this info i'm giving without alot of fact I could be dead wrong, but I THINK thats the case (or something close to it anyway) - Mon, 29 Sep 2003 1:17am
