I ride my bicycle to work every day. Like most people who ride their bikes to work, I try to be careful and aware of the traffic and pedestrians around me. Also, like many riders, I don't strictly adhere to the rules of bicycling. I know the same rules apply to bikes as vehicles, yet they are two different animals and liberties can be taken on bikes that cannot be taken in cars; Liberties such as not dismounting in a crosswalk and also riding on an empty sidewalk. Does the fact that these liberties can be taken make it ok to do so? No. Is taking this liberty worthy of our City Cops time and our collective tax dollars? Not in my opinion.

This morning I rode through a crosswalk and coasted down a deserted sidewalk on the wrong side of the road as I approached my office. Was I careful? Yes. Was I doing the right thing? No. Was I breaking the law? Yes. Did it warrant an $87 fine from one of Victoria's finest? I don't think so. However, he was kind enough to point out that he was giving me a break by not tacking on another $142 for not dismounting in the crosswalk. Thank you Officer.

I understand that what I was doing was "wrong" and against the Law. However, the way the Officer carried out his line of Duty was completely ineffective. His actions have had no effect beyond making me angry and lessening my trust and faith in the practice of Law Enforcement in this City. While he was busy giving a working man a ticket for a totally unjustifiable amount of money, there could have been someone pedaling crack a few blocks away. And there was undoubtedly City Police on their mountain bikes cruising around on the Citys sidewalks and through the Citys squares.

I would have taken this man more seriously had he stayed on his motorbike and told me to get off of the sidewalk. I would have been embarrassed, but I wouldnt be angry. I would have listened. I wouldnt be telling my co-workers and everyone within earshot my view of how pathetic and inappropriate the Officers actions were. If the Victoria City Police care about their reputation they should take into account that word of mouth is one of the most effective forms of advertising. - Wed, 17 Sep 2003 1:18pm

May be he has a quota to fill??

I don't ride my bike because I'm a wuss. I'm too scared to ride amid cars because I know too many people who have been hit. Also, I'm too slow of a rider to keep up with even the oldest granny drivers and, therefore, I'm also a danger/hazard to myself and to others. I don't understand why we can't ride on the sidewalk. Okay, no riding on downtown's sidewalk sounds fair but really--> a deserted one shouldn't matter. - Wed, 17 Sep 2003 2:07pm

I do the same thing on my way to work sometimes. I guess I'm lucky I didn't get a ticket. I probably would have argued the "common sense defence" and got myself that extra crosswalk ticket. I even wear a helmet, which is useless unless I am landing on my head. It's a crazy place. - Wed, 17 Sep 2003 2:16pm

I ride on the sidewalk 90 percent of time. Unless someone is walking on the sidewalk then I usually ride on the road or dismount. I have been hit while riding my bike 3 times (when I used to ride on the road) so I'll be damned if I will ride on the road again. The one time I have been stopped I told the cop my sob story and told him to check ICBC if he wanted and told me just not to get caught again. - Wed, 17 Sep 2003 2:28pm

I think cycalists who think they get both pedestrian and vehicle privelages deserve a ticket.
Riders who swerve in between the cars, ride down crowded sidewalks, cut off traffic, all you people deserve far more than an 80 dollar ticket AKA five accross the eyes, however having said that, this cop in question is a total asshole!
If theres noone to potentially hit/disturb whatever, why in the fuck should the cop care???
Well guess what, technically, they shouldn't...

It sorta borders on the J walking law...
You are allowed to J walk if there is no potential danger and that is beyond any doubt, however say A cop saw you, well if he thinks you were hazardous he can by all means write you up, but if you were %100 safe, he's not susposed too...

Sounds like you got shafted by the typical pig shooting for a quota scenario...

And as for the crack dealers, the same pathetic scum infront of the dougie have been trying to sell me heroin and coke etc. for the past 6 years almost every single goddamn day, they turn 14 year old girls into drug addicted prostitutes, and what are victoria's "finest" concerned with????

Ticketing skate boarders, cyclists and the occasional pot smoker.

VPD is a fucking disgrace.

What we need is a lynch mob to clean the streets, and then the police station itself... - Wed, 17 Sep 2003 2:40pm

I don't think that I had any classes with you though (I was in a grade below you but I skipped ahead later on). I used to only dress in kilts and had long curly hair. Do I sound familar at all? We used to talk to eachother but this was a long time ago... - Wed, 17 Sep 2003 2:45pm

I once got jacked up for riding on the sidewalk.. a deserted sidewalk up Johnson.. Anyhow, I said to the young cop "I see you guys riding on the sidewalks all the time!"

His reply "We are proffessionaly trained riders.."

I laughed in his face! He didnt think it was very funny.. But I told him Id probably ridden more bikes in my lifetime than he had in his 3 or so years as a cop.. Oh well, they gave me a ticket which I never paid, and 7 years later its never resurfaced.. - Wed, 17 Sep 2003 2:56pm

I used to play.. a long long time ago (guitar because a guy I used to go out with basically made me). I was never really in any bands though. I did what most kids do and only played with friends. I still have my guitars and a couple violins but laziness has taken me over so I don't practice.

I'm usually always on here during working hours because I have nothing else to do (since I'm my dad's secretary).

Are you playing any shows soon? I'll be at the Rod Iron Haulers show (at lucky on the 25th I think)-- may be I'll see you there-- that is, if you want to somebody to remember the good old days of Parklands!! - Wed, 17 Sep 2003 3:29pm

HAHA I know who you are too, Some girl. I dated Tiana's sister 6 or 7 years ago. We ran into each other a few times since I was good friends with Jackie Donaldson and a few others who you hung around. You were usually pretty quiet from what I remember.
Onto yet another incident of completely retarded police action, you are going to love this Mica. From Wednesday, September 17, 2003 Penninsula news review. Page 6 in police Briefs:

There was an accident involving a pedestrian and a vehicle at the corner of Bevan Avenue and Third Street in the morning of September 9. An elderly female was crossing Bevan in the marked crosswalk when she was struck by a car that was turning left onto Bevan from Third. The vehicle was being driven by an elderly female driver,
The woman that was struck was taken to Victoria General Hospital where she was treated for non-life threatening injuries. The driver was given a warning for failing to yield to a pedestrian.

LOL You got fined for riding your bicycle on a deserted street and this old lady hits another old lady and only gets a warning! I tell you if anyone under the age of 30 was driving that car there would have been some serious charges going on. - Wed, 17 Sep 2003 5:46pm

Metalneck-- Can you help me with my memory on you? The only guy that I know Tania's sister went out with was Ben. how do you look? I don't remember any Bradleys...

Wow, you remember me being quiet???? You must not of had any classes with me. I hung out with Denise and other Deep Cove kids really only wben I was in grade 9. After that I stuck to hanging out with the older kids (my sister's crowd, people I worked with at DQ, my boyfriend's collage friends..). But you're right, I was quiet outside of class (during breaks) since I was usually trying to catch up on homework that was due that day. - Thu, 18 Sep 2003 8:59am

I went to Stelly's and so I didn't see you at school. I dated Jolene in 95 or 96, can't really remember. I would run into you when I was in Sidney and we would be having sessions and stuff. Metalneck-- my brother Peter went out with Kate; and yes, I did work with her too. I don't remember Dave though. I knew a Dave who went out with Jackie but I don't remember his last name. Why would I know you from Airdre?? I thought I only knew Metalhead (or may know him, I'm not sure)... or are you Metalhead but you changed your alias?? I'm sorry, I still don't remember you. Tell me more and more!!!! Tell me your deepest secrets!!

I went out with a guy from Stellys a l---ong time ago: Rob Mason. He was a really nice guy that worked at a gas station! Wow! Such a skid!!! I ended up working at the Bargain Shop with Rob's mom as one of my supervisors. Yeash, Sidney is such a small town. There's no way a person can get away from their history and ex-s!

Queen- I was a senoir staffer at DQ!! Don't tell me that you worked at a Dairy Queen too?!?! All that I really remember about working there was how the bar crowd (from the Bear) would come in late in the evening and sing "Beth" (Kiss) to me. Oh how I hated that job. - Thu, 18 Sep 2003 3:57pm

Death,
I don't remember subway very well (the employess). Can you jogg my memory some more?? Were you friends with Tom Saville? [Tom didn't work there but he was known around the pot smoking community in Sidney]. Your picture looks like a handful of guys I used to smoke pot with (since it's a side profile photo). Also, what do you mean here?--> "your *might be old* boss pat used to be mine years ago when I degraded myself making subs for pot money..." I didn't work for a Pat.. or am I reading this wrong? Are you 'patting' me? (heee hee.. pat me... oh I'm a sick child) or is pat a manager from Subway? My manager at DQ was Mark. I did go to Subway all the time for dinner when I worked at the Bargain Shop though! I really really need some coffee: I'm starting to get a lack of caffine headache. - Thu, 18 Sep 2003 5:14pm

That is shitty luck Mica. I bet that statistics per year show that there are more deaths as a result of bike riders being hit by cars then the number of injuries inflicted by bicycle riders to pedestrians.. I mean how often do you hear about someone dying from getting hit by a bike rider? NEVER, let alone even breaking a bone. I will ride on the side walk if it is safer for everyone. That's the bottom line. What's a cop gonna do if you ride away anyways? Chase you, shoot you? arrest you? lol - Sat, 20 Sep 2003 5:40pm
