I am trying to quit smoking and I was just wondering what worked for other people?
Cold Turkey?
Ziban?
Nicorette?
The Patch?
I tried cold turkey but it didn't work very well I went about five hours before I was ready to rip someones head off at work. I just put a piece of nicorette in my mouth so we will see how that works. I need something that is going to make this a smooth transition, cause I work in customer service so I can't really get super cranky. - Mon, 8 Sep 2003 10:10pm

Man, the spinniest, spaciest girl that I worked with last year quit cold turkey..... We all predicted it would last until noon, but as far as I know, she quit successfully....

That might not work for you, but if Koralee could do it, it's proof that it's possible.... - Mon, 8 Sep 2003 10:34pm

I smoked for about ten years. Then I read this book on mediation by this enlightned Indian Master named Osho.

For some reason there was a section pertaining to addiction and in particular, smoking. His suggestion was to really study every action involved with having a cigarette and also the effect it has on the environmet around you. Watch it closely as it burns. Pay close attention to the feeling of the smoke entering your mouth, your airway and your lungs. The smell. The way it looks when you put it out. The color of the filter. It's texture in your fingers. Everything.

I figured I'd try it and after about six weeks the act of smoking really became ridiculous to me. I would still crave a cigarette, but as soon as the craving arose I found myself reflecting on all of the useless actions involved with actually having that smoke. It gradually became quite easy to drop the habit and I have not gone back.

Sounds nuts, but it worked. - Tue, 9 Sep 2003 12:10am

Cold turkey. Why pay more money to quit. Putting
more shit into your system to stretch out the process
is silly. After a month youll be fine. The hardest
part is drinking and not smoking. Its been 5 years
for me.ps I loved to smoke. - Tue, 9 Sep 2003 12:12pm

Well, I dunno if it's totally sucessful as I've only been quit for a week, but I went cold turkey and haven't touched one yet.

Although the cravings are there, instead of saying "I wish I could smoke" or "Look at those lucky smokers," I think "Glad I don't smoke" and shit like that.

Basically, try to think of smoking as something you do not want to do instead of something you want to do but are denying yourself.

The urge to smoke has definitely dropped off - I go whole hours without even realizing that I'm not smoking!

If you do get back into smoking, I also recommend D.S's method of paying close attention to how smoking feels while you're smoking - another book I had a while ago suggested this and it did help make me see that I really didn't like smoking at all.

I tried that Osho meditation method about twelve years ago and found it worked really well. I started smoking again because I wanted to (idiot), but I'm thinking of quitting and will probably try the method again. - Tue, 9 Sep 2003 1:57pm

What about hypnosis has anyone tried that? If it's going to work than I don't have a problem with the cost. I am using nicorette at the moment and I haven't smoked in 14 hrs. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I agree that my biggest problem is going to be when I'm drinking so I'm just going to lay of the drinking for a while :( I think the other problem is going to be at work. I smoke exactly every 1 1/2 hrs so I really am gonna have to not look at the clock!! - Tue, 9 Sep 2003 2:23pm

That description that Dicksplint gave made me want one. LOL Ive quit for 10 years now and still crave them in a wierd way. I remember when I had just quit going to parties and standing near smokers just to be able to inhale. I guess i might as well have lit up. But I quit. Remember there is no such thing as a GOOD TIME to quit. You will find all sorts of feeble reasons to have JUST ONE MORE. DONT! My Grandfather had emphesyma in his later years and remembers vowing the day a carton of cigarettes cost more than $5 would be the day he'd quit. RIP - Tue, 9 Sep 2003 3:07pm

Well I was doing great. I am using nicorette and it is helping. I just keep thinking about how much I need a new vehicle and it deters me from smoking. Except that last night I went to the NO USE FOR A NAME show and ended up smoking. I bummed a few smokes and then I broke down and bought a pack. I only smoked about 4 out of the pack and then I gave it to my boyfriend this morning. I had 1 today but that's okay because I was smoking at least half a pack a day before. I puked my guts out last night and this morning and I think it was from smoking after not smoking for almost a week. That and all the double vodka and cranberry drinks :) - Sun, 14 Sep 2003 9:44pm

JESS- Congrats on your success. You smoked like a mofo in the past, as did I. At this point in time, it feels like two large oysters are trapped in my lungs due to the fact that I smoked like a fuck last night - which is pretty well the only time I smoke. Really. Maybe last night threw me into COPD land. Feels like it. So, if you ever want to have a lung race up Mt. Tolmie or wherever let me know. The first one to hack up their lung wins, k? - Sun, 14 Sep 2003 10:02pm

um.. well that's not to bad so far. when i was quitting i found it helpful to think "i don't want a cig, it's gross" rather than things like "i can't have one!" cause the fact is that you can have one if you want. so dont want one. like most drugs its all in your mind, so try not to use crutches if you can. cold turkey is the only way to go. you can do it - Mon, 15 Sep 2003 11:23pm

Why don't my posts ever make any sense? What I MEANT to say was something alongs the line that my lungs are congested due to the fact that I smoked and excessive amount when I was injesting alcoholic beverages the night before.

Ah, yes. Yet another posting by me that has had the humour sucked out of it due to my shitty editing skills.

Hey J,

Well, after I've smoked since I was 12 or so (21 years,) I now haven't touched a smoke in 2 weeks - not a puff.

At first, I'd have to tell myself that I didn't want to smoke every 5 minutes or less, but now, hours go by and I don't notice it.

You just gotta keep thinking "nah, smoking isn't necessary" and "smoking will make me feel WORSE, not BETTER" and "nope, not right now."

It doesn't even matter if you believe it as long as you keep saying it to yourself.

And while I don't think that 'falling off the wagon' is a permanent loss, it can become its own habit - smoking when drinking, hanging out with friends, etc. It seems easier just to realize that I didn't need to smoke in any situation.

What seems to be working for me is that I just keep thinking of myself as a non-smoker who wants a smoke. I also keep thinking that I have made it this far and put everyone around me threw my horrible crankiness so it wouldn't be fair to them for me to start again. And honestly I can't stop thinking about food long enough to think about smoking. What the hell is that all about? I have heard people gain weight when they quit smoking but holly fuck I CANT STOP EATING! - Tue, 16 Sep 2003 12:08pm

I quit "cold-turkey" almost 7 years ago (and counting). I still crave them once in a while (even though they disgust me). The secret for me was to get really sick (bronchial pneumonia). You can't breathe let alone smoke for a few days, and by then you're practically a non-smoker.

Willpower is still required, but it gets easier after the first few days. Quitting smoking was one of my ultimate dreams and now it's finally a reality. Well worth the effort to shed that evil shackle. Good luck! - Wed, 17 Sep 2003 1:19pm
