Message Board > General Chitchat > Pooetry: are you still a volunteer for the SPCA?? |
some girl... User Info... | well, are you? I emailed them last week telling them I wanted to help out and was wondering what volunteering would entail (job and hour wise).. but they didn't get back to me. Actually, I had email S.T.R.E.E.T.s part of the SPCA (for the bad behavoir kitties). What do you do there anyways? - Mon, 8 Sep 2003 5:37pm
jepsycho User Info... | I don't think she is a volunteer for the SPCA. She was volunteering for VARCS. I was volunteering for the SPCA doing foster care for puppies but I haven't got the call for a while. Phone them at 388-7722 to volunteer it's easier to get a hold of them that way. They are having a walk a thon in Oct to raise money how bout trying that? I'm thinking about doing it but I'm looking for some company? POOETRY are you interested? - Mon, 8 Sep 2003 5:41pm
some girl... User Info... | Were you the one that talked about volunteering at the SPCA on the cat thread which was deleted when LiveVic changed servers?? (wow, that was quite the run-on sentence!!) Is the walkathon on the weekend? I've never done one before so you'll have to educate me: how long is it, where is it, what do I have to do.... If it _is_ on the weekend I'm all for being your walking buddy. But I must stress WALKING buddy--> I don't run. Infact, I don't even run for the bus. I ONLY walk. If you're willing to walk and talk with me then email me at [email protected] - Mon, 8 Sep 2003 5:45pm
Pooetry User Info... | Yo! I used to do dog walking through the SPCA. It'd probably be faster to call or just go down to the SPCA to talk to them about volunteering. I think there's a form or something you have to fill out, plus become a member ($5 per year, I think). Speaking of volunteering, today I signed up to volunteer at the AIDS Walk on Sept. 21. So if anyone wants to pelt me with rotten eggs, I'll be at one of the water stations. AIDS Vancouver Island is still looking for some more volunteers, if anyone's interested. The number is 384-2366. Jess- "Walk-A-Thon"... just that word makes it seem like one hell of a long ass walk, eh? Do you know what date it's on? I'll probably be up for it. Ciao for now, amigos. - Mon, 8 Sep 2003 6:55pm

some girl... User Info... | jepsycho-- you're Sparky's mailwoman/mailperson friend... are you not? - Tue, 9 Sep 2003 10:41am
jepsycho User Info... | I'm not sure what you mean but no I'm not a mailperson. It would be nice though they make a decent wage. I work at a taxi company. - Tue, 9 Sep 2003 11:53am
some girl... User Info... | I obviously have you mixed up with your doppelganger. You and her have the same name and both work at 5:30 in the morning and both care about animals and carry the same witty-attitude... perhaps you have a split personality and simply don't realize that you're actually part taxi-cab worker- part mailcarrier???? Kind of like "The Faces of Eve". - Tue, 9 Sep 2003 2:22pm
jepsycho User Info... | hmmmm ....... I guess that's why I always find mail with other people's names on it under my bed. Teeheehee. So who is Sparky? I was posting as J.J. but that was boring so I changed it. Did you think about the walk? - Tue, 9 Sep 2003 2:30pm
Dave Noisy User Info... | To clear up the info about walking dogs at the SPCA (i'm a dog-walking coordinator): You don't have to be a member, tho you do need to go through some (~2hrs) training. There are a few requirements as well, mainly being able to commit to coming to the SPCA at least once a week on a regular schedule (Sun-Sat, either 9-10am [could be dif. now] or 6-8pm). As an example, you'd sign up for Tues Evenings, or Sun Mornings, and come by and walk at least one dog for 30mins. Pretty easy actually. And it's great for the dogs to get out, and meet new folks. I'm not sure when the next training sessions will be..if there's a bunch of people signed up, they're more likely to push ahead with it tho. There are a few other programs, fostering being a big one. People can foster a dog on the SOS (Sleep Over and Socialize) program (pick the dog each nite around 4:30, drop them off the next morning), or there's the CAT SMART program ( http://www.IslandVeg.com/catsmart ) where you can provide a temporary home for a cat who's been at the shelter too long, and is getting rather wigged out. The latter is GREAT for students, since they're rather temporary, and it's a short-term committment. (Usually 1-3 months.) With the cat program, you keep the cat at home with you the entire time, and the SPCA will provide you with food and supplies. Phew! Hope i covered everything! Best to stop in the SPCA at talk to them in person, phones and email aren't so great.. - Tue, 9 Sep 2003 5:52pm
jepsycho User Info... | Hey Dave I fostered 4 puppies for the SPCA and for the record they only supplied food for 1 dog. Personally I don't mind but I don't want people volunteering to foster and expecting food t be supplied when in actual fact it's not. Also I told the SPCA that I could foster adult dogs if they got along with my dog as well as puppies so why haven't I heard from them since I fostered a puppy at the beginning of the summer? I had puppy after puppy then suddenly none? Unfortunately I can't do the SOS program because I work shift work. - Tue, 9 Sep 2003 6:57pm
some girl... User Info... | jepsycho- I'm busy at 10:45 every Sunday so I don't know if I can actually partake in the SPCA walk-- but it looks like I may be helping out one of my friends with the AIDS walk (behind the scenes stuff--she's the one that put on the Gong show and volunteers at VARCS). Why are walks/marathons so early in the day??? I thought they'd be at noon. - Fri, 12 Sep 2003 12:12pm
jepsycho User Info... | I dunno seems pretty silly to me. I would probably participate in more if they were not so flippin early in the morning. I'm not usually up until like 2pm! - Fri, 12 Sep 2003 5:42pm
Great Big Eel User Info... | Yeah. I don't get up til 4 p.m. I drink red wine, drop acid and listen to stupid music. Life is good. - Fri, 12 Sep 2003 6:17pm
Dave Noisy User Info... | Did you ask for more dog food? If you don't ask, they prolly won't give it to you..some folks are happy paying for it themselves. The dog walking times are from 9-10:30am and 6-8pm. The reasons for the times is to accommodate the adoption hours, and keep the dogs on-site. However, on holidays, you can walk a dog any time of the day. - Sat, 13 Sep 2003 12:56am
Dinkus User Info... | Hey, I want to walk a dog. You guys got dog food. Hey Pooetry, meet me at the 7-11! Hey, dogs is good. Do you like dogs. Hey, I like to sleep in, do you? Let's have a sleepover...... ahhhhhhh! - Sat, 13 Sep 2003 1:03am
Pooetry User Info... | Dinkus, I'll meet you at the Sevie at 5pm tonight (parents have a 6:30 curfew). Me and my posse will be there with bells on to "meet" and "greet" you and your thugs, hommie. Anyone have any brass knuckles I can borrow? - Sat, 13 Sep 2003 10:23am
jepsycho User Info... | DAVE NOISY I was fine with paying for the dog food I already have a 100 plus pound dog so a little 10 pound puppy really doesn't eat much. I just don't want people fostering an animal and finding out at the very last second that a buy the way you must supply the food. When I filled out the fostering questionarre I was asked if I needed the food supplied and I said yes. When I actually started to volunteer I was told food was not supplied. Penny gave me some food fpr the third dog, but I think it was because sahe would call me for an emergency situation and I would be there in half an hour! - Tue, 16 Sep 2003 3:44pm
