Pooetry User Info... | Does anyone know who the opening bands for Modest Mouse on the Sept. 2 show were? The show was awesome. - Wed, 3 Sep 2003 9:01pm
micoll User Info... | they were chet and cobra high. on a related note, i thought the sound was terrible. eh? - Wed, 3 Sep 2003 10:06pm
Rockbar User Info... | Shitty sound is pretty typical of that room. I thought the vocals were a bit mashed in with eveything else. Sometimes though, if the right set up is brought in it can sound nice in there. - Thu, 4 Sep 2003 6:12am
KnifeGhost User Info... | The vocals weren't very clear last night, bu I assumed that's just cause I was too close to get the feed from the PA..... Most of what I could hear was Isaac Brock's guitar and drums, with some bass and other guitar..... - Thu, 4 Sep 2003 6:34pm
Pooetry User Info... | I went on the first night and the vocals actually weren't very clear that night either. Seeing them was really cool though. Happy I went. At first, dumbass me, was standing infront of the speaker at the front. That was smart. I felt like my ear drums were going to bust out of my head. After that I went to the back, near the bar. There were some wild (for lack of a better and kinder word) dancers. I've never seen anything quite like it, really. Maybe like Elaine from Seinfeld dancing with Parkinson's and on crystal meth? It was entertaining. - Thu, 4 Sep 2003 9:52pm
Brooke User Info... | every time i go to sugar, the sound blows. cat power blew, yo la tengo blew. jeez. and i heard from several sources that modest mouse wasn't the hottest. i was going to see blackalicious, but i know i won't be able to hear any of the words, so it seems pointless. maybe i'm a defeatist. sorry to whoever is doing the sound... i'm sure it's a hard room for it. - Fri, 5 Sep 2003 2:28pm
micoll User Info... | boycott sugar. no way i'd see blackalicious or weakerthans with sound that bad. - Fri, 5 Sep 2003 2:54pm
Dave Noisy User Info... | Aye, the sound at Sugar consistantly blows...for MM it was worse than usual, sadly. But, it's Sugar and a $20 ticket, maybe we're asking too much? *shrug* - Fri, 5 Sep 2003 7:39pm
malcolm SOS User Info... | Thought I'd put in my 2 cents worth here since I was responsible for these shows. I thought the two nights went off really well overall. I have seen Modest Mouse many times and these were 2 great performances. However, on the 2nd the sound definitely could have been better. The problem was that due to hassles at the border and the ferries being very busy, Modest Mouse were 4 hours late. So they arrived after 8pm (doors were supposed to open at 8pm) and therefore could not have a soundcheck. That is why there was a delay getting them onstage and they were doing their best given the situation to make the sound as good as it should be. But in the end the sound wasn't 100%. Anyone who was at both shows will agree that the sound was much better on the 3rd. That's just the way things go sometimes with live shows. Also, there are limitations with the room. There are places in the room that sound really good and there are other places where it isn't as good. But at least it is easier to see the stage than at Victoria's other large bar (Legends) where it is impossible to see the band at all (and the sound can be pretty bad too). All I can say is that I do my best to provide quality shows everytime. I value the fact that people spend their hard earned $ to see their favorite bands so it is important that they are able to see the band and hear a quality show. But in my experience no matter how good I think the show was, some people will absolutely love it and some will hate it. Nothing I can do about that except keep trying to make things better....To the people who think Sugar is a bad venue, I would like to hear your thoughts on what promoters can do instead. Thanks to all the people who came out to these shows and proved that Victoria is a city that will come out when good bands take the time to come over here (especially for 2 nights). - Sat, 6 Sep 2003 1:06am
KnifeGhost User Info... | C'mon, Brooke, Blackalicious would be worth it for the phat beats alone..... - Sat, 6 Sep 2003 1:27pm
rounder User Info... | i saw frank black and no means no there and i thought the sound was great...maybe i was just too wasted - Sat, 6 Sep 2003 1:43pm
Zippgunn User Info... | I too saw Nomeansno at Sugar and Malcolm is right, the room has enormous problems, mainly the giant cube-like bass trap up on the ceiling right in front of the stage. The sound in Sugar can be decent in some of the areas with lousy sight lines but in many places it is absolutely terrible and I can well imagine the problems that MM had with no soundcheck (their soundchecks run at least an hour, too). But, hey, it's a disco not a concert hall. - Sat, 6 Sep 2003 2:12pm
blah User Info... | do make say think had great sound the 1st time they were in vic. the 2nd time through it was okay. --both sugar shows. - Sat, 6 Sep 2003 8:11pm
jesse scott User Info... | i don't know malcom, i have never attended one of your sugar shows(due to my budget constraints) but i can assure you that everyone i know appreciates your efforts. e-mail me about any shows for the boat. - Sat, 6 Sep 2003 11:48pm
malcolm SOS User Info... | Well, exactly my point (in response to those who said the sound was good at certain shows while others are saying it was bad). I thought the Frank Black show had great sound and I thought Do Make Say Think had perfect sound, especially that first show they played here. But some people said they thought the sound at Frank Black was bad. So I guess it depends on where you are in the room because I employ the best sound techs $ can buy and I bring in a top notch turbo sound rig everytime I do an event at Sugar. - Sun, 7 Sep 2003 12:17am
lowBoy User Info... | The last Do Make Say Think show had really good sound. I saw the MM show on the 3rd and the sound wasn't *that* horrible. I heard a complaint from some girl that Cobra High was way too loud, but I didn't think so at all. But then she started spouting shit about how they sounded just like Hot Hot Heat, and after a bit of arguing about how Cobra High was better, I basically ignored her past that point. And Malcolm, thanks a mil for bringing good shows into town. You'll always get my support for great shows like the ones SOS has been putting on. - Sun, 7 Sep 2003 2:46am
