I ride a scooter. But I'm an asshole, so you probably wouldn't want to ride with me.

What kind of scoot did you get? - Tue, 2 Sep 2003 9:07pm

Sweet. I'm an elitist Vespa rider. Therefore an asshole.

And no, there's nothing wrong with it.

I work at the Tattoo Zoo. Stop by and we'll talk bikes. Or something. - Tue, 2 Sep 2003 10:20pm

Tuesdays at 7 is the plastic bikes club. I'm not sure what they're called.

They won't make fun of your Honda.

I wouldn't either, I'd rather see someone ride cause they like it versus someone who rides as a fashion accessory.

You don't have to ask for *GD, just come in and talk to the guy with the scooter pictures in his room. Me.

God, I know it's probably blasphemous to the Vespa crowd to say so, but Honda Jazzes are so beautiful......

A Vespa would be nice, but I wouldn't buy one unless it was totally refurbished.... I'm not much of a mechanic.... How much would a good used Vespa run a brother?

Advantages of Hondas: Cheap, new, and fucking beautiful..... And they're Honda, so they run like the fucking hell..... - Wed, 3 Sep 2003 4:07am

It's a "Vespa"!!
Scooters are what young children and pretentious water bottling carrying yuppies (probably you) ride. At least the children are innocents. - Wed, 3 Sep 2003 8:21pm

It's not a Vespa unless it's a Vespa.....

If you wanna get technical, it's a motor-scooter.....

Honda Jazzes are Honda's new retro-styled _motor_-scooter..... Good looking machines, affordable, and all that...... - Wed, 3 Sep 2003 11:27pm

I just find scooters to be silly. Hitching yourself to a hamster running on a wheel attached to a chariot would get you around quicker. I've seen bigger moters on an electric weed eater. - Thu, 4 Sep 2003 1:24am

The Honda Jazz is pretty nice looking. But a 4-stroke, so no real guts. Not very fast on the takeoff, and no top speed.

But the nice looking, AND tunable Yamaha retro bike is much nicer. The 2-strokin Vino. Many more options to get out of the 50 km/h zone. Why, with a little de-restriction (maybe 50 bucks?) you can get em up to 70 or 80. And if you want to get crazy, a 70cc top end, a bigger carb, some better belts and variator, a sweet sounding pipe, and you've got yourself one dangerous lil death trap. With all the style and "reliability" of it's metal counterparts.

Of course, all that work done to a Vespa and it is going to push you up past 125 km/h, AND you can do the disc brake conversion...so its a smidge safer...

And after learning how to do it all, why you'll practically be a mechanic. Broke, but a mechanic. - Thu, 4 Sep 2003 1:55am

Are the rental companies a good place to pick up a scooter? Also, do you need a motorcycle licence to ride one -- and if so, can you take the test on a scooter? - Thu, 4 Sep 2003 2:20am

I think you can ride scooters smaller than 50CCs with a learner's permit..... - Thu, 4 Sep 2003 5:12am

ny thing smaller than 100cc's you can ride with a regular license. Anything over you need a bike license. I think jazz,s look stupid as well as vino's I like the trail bike look of the honda ruckus. - Thu, 4 Sep 2003 6:06am

Its anything under 50cc that you can ride with a regular drivers license. And it must have an automatic transmission.

A 50cc Vespa still needs a M/C license because its got a standard transmisson.

And I would say that, no, the rental companies are probably not a good place to pick up a scooter. You'll pay too much for something that has been abused every single kilometer of its life.

You're better off checking the classifieds.

The ruckus is definately cool, but I know very little about it and its motor. - Thu, 4 Sep 2003 11:22am

I own a Ruckus and think it's a blast. Unless you carpool to/from work it is the cheapest mode of transportation (yes, even cheaper than the bus...) The Ruckus is a 4 stroke engine and is very similar to a Jazz. I just like the look better, big tires and very little plastic. My long-term dream is to restore/remodel a Vespa. (Metallic Orange with shiny blue stars and 7 mirrors....) But I needed a ride that was low maintaince (and reliable) for getting back and forth to work. The Vespa will come in time... After owning a scooter, I will never not own one. Just getting on it makes me smile.
As for the club that meets on Tuesday nights, everyone is welcome. The ride is usually about 50k with an optional coffee stop at the end. It is made up of all kinds of bikes; vespa, ruckus (pleural rucki {?}), vinos, jazz, elite, aero... The top speed for most bikes is 60k, but all the fun roads have a posted speed limit of 60k or less. If you join us for a ride, I promise you'll find roads you didn't even know exisited.....meepmeep - Fri, 5 Sep 2003 1:08am

I'm interested in replacing the car with a scooter. What do you have to watch out for when shopping used? Are there mechanics who'll inspect them for you? Any of you scooter nuts know of/have one for sale? - Fri, 5 Sep 2003 3:03pm
