RSBF User Info... | Hhhmmmmmm........... someone should really call Bruce Willis. LONDON (Reuters) - A giant asteroid is heading for Earth and could hit in 2014, U.S. astronomers have warned British space monitors. But for those fearing Armageddon, don't be alarmed -- the chances of a catastrophic collision are just one in 909,000. Asteroid "2003 QQ47" will be closely monitored over the next two months. Its potential strike date is March 21, 2014, but astronomers say that any risk of impact is likely to decrease as further data is gathered. On impact, it could have the effect of 20 million Hiroshima atomic bombs, a spokesman for the government's Near Earth Object Information Centre told BBC radio. The Centre issued the warning about the asteroid after the giant rock was first observed in New Mexico by the Lincoln Near Earth Asteroid Research Programme. "The Near Earth Object will be observable from Earth for the next two months and astronomers will continue to track it over this period," said Dr Alan Fitzsimmons, one of the expert team advising the Centre. Asteroids such as 2003 QQ47 are chunks of rock left over from the formation of the solar system 4.5 billion years ago. Most are kept at a safe distance from the Earth in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. But the gravitational influence of giant planets such as Jupiter can nudge asteroids out of these safe orbits and send them plunging towards Earth. - Tue, 2 Sep 2003 12:23pm

The Mad Subwoofer User Info... | according to the super-accurate 5000 year Mayan calendar, all bets are off as of 2011; the date their astronomers thought the thing to be no longer relevant. http://www.thestarcenter.org/Info_Center/Articles/mayan_calendar/mayan_calendar.html Many cultures through out history all seem to have singled out the period around the year 2000 as being the "end time" for one reason or another. New age dogma maybe, but one of those things that make you go "hmmm.." Don't think I'll be maxing out those credit cards just yet. Oh wait...did that already. - Wed, 3 Sep 2003 8:47am
FeLiXtheCaT User Info... | i really don't believe in this stuff. if the world was to end, then it would surprise everyone because no one can tell the future. i think maybe after we all die and our childrens, childrens, childrens destroy all the natural resourses people will just start dieing off. no more trees and people will just start breathing in pollution. after that then maybe the planet can rebuild its self in millions of years. and once again it could carry life. - Wed, 3 Sep 2003 2:52pm
The Mad Subwoofer User Info... | Well, in essence you are quite correct. Energy (and by that I mean ALL things in existence)does not have a "beginning" or "end" only an endless cycle of transformation and change. This "impermanence" has been echoed bu many cultures and philosophies, mostly eastern (Buddism for example.) As we begin to gain a greater understanding of the true nature of the universe, time and time again the same mathematical archetypes keep presenting themselves. Both cosmology and quantum physics consistently show that what we used to precieve as just mere "co-incidence" is in fact a reflection of the fabric that we are all interwoven into. We see thes patterns in nature, art, science and philosophy. What was once often thought of as superstitious nonsense has often shown to have basis in fact. The Hindu creation myths have proven to be very real with it's cycle of death, re-birth, transformation, etc. This is analogous to our star creating the solar system only top swallow it up again sometime later, same diff. My point above was just that through out history many of these seemingly un-related cultures often point to THIS point in time as the crux of "some" sorta great change or transformation. While we may not be able to "tell the future" we must keep in mind that time and space arE not linear, one "event" happening after another. Each have profound influence over the other, bending and folding into one another (where the concept of a wormhole is possible?) This may in some way validate things like precognition or deja vu. "Chaos theory" has somethingh to do with thjis as well i think, that "butterfly flapping it's wings in singapore causing a hurricane in the carribean" concept; all things interconnected and influenced by the other. Quantum physics is some pretty heady stuff that I only _just_ barely understand but is worth the attempt if for no other reason than to see science and theology beginning to compliment each other. The advances that are being made have forced the scientific community to completely re-work what we thought we knew every few months or so....everything get's thrown out and rebuilt with each new discovery. Trippy shit. You can read a quick little bit of what this babble is about here; http://www.phanes.com/beggui.html The flick "Waking life" also touches on this and might be worth a gander. my head hurts now... - Wed, 3 Sep 2003 4:19pm
