Shawn User Info... | Does anyone know or have any experience with a live drum machine/program. I am tinkering with the idea of programming drums on to a laptop and playing them through an amp into a PA. Is this possible?? - Mon, 18 Aug 2003 4:00am
ticklefish User Info... | people do it all the time. Depends on your software/laptop as to how stable it will be (gettting dropouts live is no fun). Also will depend on your soundcard on the laptop. If you are sending a single stereo output with the drums premixed, then the guy running the PA can't adjust the relative volume of the kick vs snare vs cymbals etc. If you have a multi-out soundcard, then you can send separate feeds. what software are you planning on using? is it general MIDI drums, or real samples? Is this just for backing tracks? The possibilities are wide open. - Mon, 18 Aug 2003 12:41pm
SentencedtoBurn User Info... | Mortician uses a drum machine. Karl Sanders programs all of those lame Egytpian noises into a Macintosh while Nile plays. If you want to hear drum programming that is just insane, try some Necrophagist ( album = Onset of Putrefacation). I'm pretty sure that guy has never played drums, but his ability to program a drum machine is uncanny. Essentially it's possible, however, I'm thinking it would be rather costly. - Mon, 18 Aug 2003 3:34pm
KnifeGhost User Info... | Reason... I have a few laptop pilot friends who use Reason and nothing but Reason for live shows.... - Mon, 18 Aug 2003 7:30pm
ticklefish User Info... | Reason is pretty good. I have it at home, haven't used it live, but I know it would work well. Also check out Project5, the new offering from Cakewalk, which is very similar to Reason, but will function seamlessly with Sonar. Really, what you want is something with a "seamless audio engine", so it doesn't stall or drop out when you need to make mods on the fly. - Mon, 18 Aug 2003 8:48pm
Shawn User Info... | We use Fruity Loops 4.0 and it is a fairly descent program to record. SO the drum tracks are all at appropriate levels. Thanks a lot for the info, any further comments would be much appreciated. - Mon, 18 Aug 2003 9:42pm
fudg User Info... | forget the computer , program the drum machine , and run it through the p.a. - Tue, 19 Aug 2003 4:39am
KnifeGhost User Info... | Fuck Fruity Loops.... I mean, I've used it my share, but it's got NOTHING on Reason..... Hell, if you're worried about levels, just run a compressor at the end of your signal in Reason, then adjust the level in the board... - Tue, 19 Aug 2003 5:33am
Shawn User Info... | How would one go about obtaining "Reason"?? - Tue, 19 Aug 2003 12:34pm
ticklefish User Info... | Probably available at L&M, or online straight from Propellerheads software https://dynamo.propellerheads.se/shop/index.cfm, but it is $450 US. Project5 from Cakewalk sells for $429. http://www.cakewalk.com both offer free trial versions for download. You can also use Kazaa, if piracy doesn't bug you, but crack versions frequently don't work right, and with both Reason or Project5, the manual is critical to really get the most out of it. If you are a student, or know someone who is, you can nail Proj5 off Ebay right now (academic version, same as pro version, just different pricing) for $215 US. You can probably find Reason v2.5 for the same price on Ebay too. - Tue, 19 Aug 2003 5:46pm
KnifeGhost User Info... | Ignore all that.... Chances are you know 17 people that can get you a fully working copy of 2.5 free of charge, or maybe for the cost of two or three CDRs....... I am, sadly, not one of those people...... - Tue, 19 Aug 2003 6:45pm
