BBJones User Info... | I think there was a post about this recently but I'm looking for info on stripping paint off a guitar down to the natural wood. Anyone know who does this? Any idea on prices? I have a guitar that was re-painted and was thinking about having it stripped. Mainly want to know about cost at this point. Cheers - Fri, 20 Mar 2009 8:58am
laprider User Info... | Don't pay someone all they will do is brush on stripper and remove it. Your basic can of good quality gel like stripper, brush on wipe off, repeat, and maybe repeat - Fri, 20 Mar 2009 11:38am
BBJones User Info... | Yeah well I can do that myself easily enough, but there's the other things to do with removing all the electronics/parts carefully and properly (and knowing how to put them back together), and how to deal with difficult areas around pearl inlay on headstocks and other such things. I'll probably talk to the likes of Dave Pellow as I can trust a luthier to do it right. - Fri, 20 Mar 2009 11:44am
superslacks User Info... | By 'inlay' are you referring to the binding around a headstock? If so, that stuff is most likely acrylic and will melt as soon as any chemical stripper touches it. If you mess up the binding you are in for a bigger hassle than I could ever describe. My advice is to use a chemical for most, but steer clear of anything non-wood. Sand away that stuff instead, or use a cabinet scraper. Or . . . don't go for natural, just rough up the existing finish, mask, and go with a solid colour. As for the electronics, if you make detailed notes you should be fine. Hopefully you'll only have to desolder the ground to the bridge. If you need help with that contact me off-list. - Fri, 20 Mar 2009 10:50pm
