McGillicuddys User Info... | Alright listen up folks. I keep seeing all these posters for St.Paddys, spelled St.Patty. So just a little lesson. Patty is the short form of Patricia as in the woman's name. Paddy is the short form for Padraigh (Patrick). So it's St.PADDYS not St.Patties. It is after all a day to celebrate the saint not a burger :) Though that would be a pretty cool day too. - Thu, 12 Mar 2009 9:20am
Jose Arrogantio User Info... | Though I'm not the biggest fan of language police, this one really gets on my tits too. Of course, I'm sure you also meant to add that it should be possessive as well - Saint Patrick's, or Paddy's - not plural (there's only one of them, after all), like Paddies, Paddys [sic], Patties, or, God forbid, Pattys. - Thu, 12 Mar 2009 10:15am
McGillicuddys User Info... | Yeah, not trying to be grammar police, it just absolutely drives me nuts, and yes, yes, possesive, though in modern English the possesive no longer has to have the apostrophe ;) - Thu, 12 Mar 2009 10:20am
Doc User Info... | I invite you to come down to the college and share that view of possessives with my English professor. ~Mmmmmm, tits. Doc - Thu, 12 Mar 2009 10:27am
wheate User Info... | Who cares? St. Patty's is gay anyways. - Thu, 12 Mar 2009 11:22am
Tyler User Info... | Padraigh is a dated name, especially to modern North America, where Patrick is much more common. This is how a language evolves. People collectively choose what makes sense to them. If a culture where nobody hears the name "Padraigh" steers them to abbreviating Patrick to Pat, then adding an "ee" sound to the end, and spelling it "Patty" to be consistent with "Pat" and "Patrick" - who am I to complain? A Google search for "st patty's" returns six times as many results as "st paddy's". The people have spoken. But yeah, St. Patty's is lame. I believe that a possessive word does, in fact, need to retain the apostrophe. That's what the Copyeditor's Handbook: A Guide for Book Publishing and Corporate Communications (Amy Einsohn) states, although some business names choose to omit it out of tradition, following more dated rules. More info from the net: "Sometimes the apostrophe is omitted in the names of clubs, societies, and other organizations, even though the standard principles seem to require it." "Where a business name is based on a family name, it may or may not take an apostrophe (compare Sainsbury's and Harrods), though in recent times there has been an increasing tendency to drop the apostrophe." So really, that's why it's okay in this case. - Thu, 12 Mar 2009 12:23pm
McGillicuddys User Info... | I invite you to come down to the college and share that view of possessives with my English professor. Hehe, the funny thing is, it was my Technical Writing prof out at Interurban who told me that. After consulting numerous style guides though, he is (or was) completely full of BS. So I've learned something new today..lol. Normally I still use it, not sure why I didn't in that post, just typing fast. Damn it's turned into a grammar thread. - Thu, 12 Mar 2009 12:34pm

McGillicuddys User Info... | Joe Benge? No, this was back in 2000, I think it might have been Ian Cameron?? I seem to remember he was teaching the Technical Writing course back then, and I think he was just a fill in for that course for 1 or 2 semesters. - Thu, 12 Mar 2009 2:58pm
