Its too bad it didnt mention a few more of the active metal bands within the scene, but some decent coverage none the less.

good to see they chose Archon Legion as a main focus. awesome to see the Reverend in the paper. and livevic! and hierophant...

"In the meantime, the heavy metal community has stepped to the fore, covering the most ground -- on stage and off -- of any musical scene in the city."

kind of a big claim there...! - Mon, 26 Jan 2009 9:55pm

Can't expect the TC to mention more bands unless they are told which bands to mention really.
Nice article in general though.
Great that Live Victoria was mentioned. Hopefully that gets people checking it for show listings who didn't before. - Mon, 26 Jan 2009 9:58pm Edited: Mon, 26 Jan 2009 10:09pm

MD has his heart in the right place but when I see a phrase such as "garnering unanimous praise" I just have to laugh. Hell, metalheads are rarely unanimous on ANYTHING (other than, perhaps, that they like free booze). - Tue, 27 Jan 2009 2:22pm

Zipp you've been listening to too much Zappa. I interviewed something like 7 or 8 people for the story, representing all facets of the music community (musicians, clubs, promoters, zine publishers, radio hosts, etc.) and each person mentioned the exact same bands I referenced. But "unanimous praise" was a little over the top, I admit. - Tue, 27 Jan 2009 2:54pm

I know I'm being nit-picky. NEAR unanimous praise shall we say? Even the mighty Zappa had his (many) detractors, no?
I had a great creative writing teacher in high school and one of his favorite pastimes was to dissect reviews of movies, concerts and records; it was a real hoot. One review of a Rush concert talked about the audience going into "paroxisms of ecstacy", a phrase that has stuck in my head for 35 years. Writing about art without going overboard is sometimes difficult. I'll admit MD does it better than most especially in a small pond like Vic where it's really easy to piss off just about everybody without trying to. - Tue, 27 Jan 2009 3:10pm Edited: Tue, 27 Jan 2009 3:18pm

all I gotta say is the more the merrier in terms of exposure for anything to do with music in Victoria (regardless of the style)... quite simply... we need it! - Tue, 27 Jan 2009 10:34pm

*grin* Malevolence = Male Violence!!! I actually have both of the Apparitions and Race To Infinity demos.

BTW: Who the hell are Archon Legion? I'm too out of touch with the scene these days it seems. - Thu, 29 Jan 2009 8:27pm

i think just "praise" would have been fine, "unanimous praise"...is a little unessesary.

"covering the most ground -- on stage and off -- of any musical scene in the city"...if this board is any reflection of the city's music scene, maybe i'll have to agree!

i would have been stoked to see some victoria metal history in there, but a pretty cool article all in all, espcially the free promotion for several of the scene's bands - Thu, 29 Jan 2009 10:04pm

Yeah. If someone didn't know any better, they might think every other band in Victoria heavy music scene sucks shitlogs. - Fri, 30 Jan 2009 12:09am
