evilkleg User Info... | Hello Everyone. I noticed in the "Gear Buy and Sell" section that there was a thread about guitar re-finishing and it sounds as though some people have experience with it. I am wondering if anyone knows specifically where to buy the paint (opaque lacquer) locally? I've been to Industrial paints and plastics and most hardware stores and all they seem to have is clear lacquer for furniture etc. Have any of you ACTUALLY re-finished a guitar with lacquer? And if so, could you point me in the right direction so I can purchase the paint locally and not have to order online? I'm talking solid colours here, no sunbursts or anything like that. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. - Tue, 20 Jan 2009 11:15am
superslacks User Info... | Yes I have refinished guitars. If you read the other thread you've already seen the discussion on the various levels of refinishing and that home diy job has it's limitations, and your skill with a sprayer will largely determine your success. I would use a solid colour spray bomb from your local hardware/paint store (unless you have your own sprayer - in which case why are you even asking) with as many clear coats as you have patience. Wet sand between coats. After the last clear coat wet sand up to 1000 grit and finish with Meguiar's #10 (both available at a local body shop). If you want to seek out some specialty car paints you might as well send the body off to the shop where they'll have a proper spray booth and so on, and just pay them. The advantage in that method is it'll come with some guarantee as well as some recourse if it comes out substandard (you no likey, no pay) - Tue, 20 Jan 2009 11:50am Edited: Tue, 20 Jan 2009 2:37pm
evilkleg User Info... | The reason I was asking about where to buy is because I can't seem to find lacquer spray bombs in solid colors. If you know of a specific store that carries them I'd appreciate it. - Tue, 20 Jan 2009 3:45pm

superslacks User Info... | I'm surprised Industrial Plastics didn't have anything useful. Are you stuck on using lacquer (ie nitrocellulose) for your colour coats? My understanding is that lacquer is a clear suspension into which tinting is added - so you won't easily get an opaque colour. - Tue, 20 Jan 2009 8:12pm
hoffa User Info... | go to stewmac.com and buy actual guitar paint. They can't sell you the thinner (explanation on their site-no aerosols or solvents shipped by air) but I believe everything else is available for shipping. You can even buy books by Dan Erliwine on how to do it properly. You'll need a sprayer but you can buy a very simple one powered by canned air. Good luck - Tue, 20 Jan 2009 9:09pm Edited: Tue, 20 Jan 2009 9:11pm
FISH User Info... | Go see the guys at JB autobody on Oak st. They can mix you any color you want in an aerosol either in a base/clear or a single stage. I believe the custom color bombs are about 15 + tax. . - Tue, 20 Jan 2009 10:29pm
evilkleg User Info... | Thanks guys. I'll try your suggestions. - Wed, 21 Jan 2009 11:07am
