| Sati User Info... | Sorry, we protected the contact e-mails in profiles a long time ago but never considered auto-tampering with board posts. | The Professor User Info... | Awww, looks like spam bots are now really starting to take our forum seriously. We're all grown up. I could probably rig something up that'll hide emails, although, for people who have good spam protection, like with a gmail account, then it won't really matter if they get spammed, and they might want the benefit of the immediate mail link. I get weird calls from mexico sometimes. and some weird text messages. mainly, I blame the phone companies for requiring area codes, because now people write their numbers with the area codes and the spambots get all the info they need. - Wed, 31 Dec 2008 11:03am | ||
| Sati User Info... | Oh CRAP! Seriously? Well what the hell do we do now??? I got a recorded call yesterday, and I never get bs calls. grrr. If there's one thing we make HUGE efforts to do on these sites, is protect people's privacy. If ever you guys catch anything that might be a hole we've missed, PLEASE let me or Nev know right away, and don't assume that someone else will, because I've found stuff thats been obviously wrong for months before. | Pierce User Info... | I have deleted my whole profile of any information. I have had my profile on here with every last piece of my info since 2001. Now it says nothing, literally. I am bandless right now anyways so i shouldn't even be on here. But I got great website invitations, and I must be lucky because I have won 3 phone contests. All i had to do was press 9. You'll have the option of doing so within the privacy of the system, but we really don't want posting regular contact info to be considered a risk. | Doc User Info... | I just never post my phone number on the site. Spambots not withstanding, it's just not the kind of info that I feel comfortable having floating around in cyberspace. As for the e-mail thing, I have a separate e-mail account that I use for websites such as this, and any reply that I make to any poster tells them to include keywords in the subject line of e-mail that they send me so that it can get throguh my filters. It's really not that hard to avoid spam if one puts in just a little effort, and I think that Sati and Nev do tons for us alreasy, why make this their problem. ~Making the world a safer place one kick in the nuts at a time. | The Professor User Info... | I go with the approach of spreading my email far and wide, and my phone number too, for that matter. I've got good spam protection, so I don't worry about trying to hide my email. With my [email protected] account, which is hosted using the same system as gmail, I get almost zero spam in my invoice, even though it's posted unprotected all over this site and the Internet. There's tons of spam that comes to that account but it's all filtered out. I get unsolicited phone calls now and again, but no more, than I've always got. I don't really have any reason to think that anymore got my number from the Internet. Tyler, what makes you think that they had actually gotten your number from our forum, rather than from some other source? I'm sure they could have, but it seems like a wierd approach. I've only distributed my number in private emails, private messages on facebook, this forum, and a facebook event as contact information. for all I know, they're doing 250-000-0000, 250-000-0001, etc. seems more likely. - Wed, 31 Dec 2008 3:07pm | ||
| Doc User Info... | There is a possibility that they are in fact solicited phone calls and text messages Tyler, and you,or someone else, just did it when you were drunk/high/whatever and don't remember. I don't say this to make fun, but I actually think that this is a possibility. I know someone who, when we were out drinking, lost his phone. Someone later "found" it for him, and the next time I spoke to him he had begun to receive alot of strange text messages. My view is that we can't assume all our users will know enough to protect their stuff, so if we're able to prevent a problem, lets do it. Doomhammer, why would you need to do that if you have the option of hiding your address and if you haven't elected for the sites themselves to notify you about anything? And Chopper, we learn as we go. From what I know, we've addressed what went on and taken steps to ensure that it does not happen again. I wouldn't fault anyone if you want to take precautions anyway, but if you believe we haven't done enough, could you please get in touch with Nev or Scott, or myself directly and let us know what you'd suggest?
