Dan Long User Info... | Im usually not much of a philosopher but here goes. This is something that has been bothering me. Does any one else think that with all the technology and blabbing and shit talking and joking that people do these days that we as a species have lost all respect and reverence for the written and spoken word. In ancient times before public schools you learned the art of speech from your parents or the elders of your tribe or horde or whatever group you were in. In ancient egypt if there was a mother with a virgin daughter who did not care for a particular suitor then she would go to her friendly neighbourhood wizard and get something called an execration spell. These spells were simply written words on a piece of papyrus paper. She would then grind up the spell and brew it in tea which she would then serve to the suitor, rendering him impotent and thus useless as a man and a husband. This example goes to show the reverence that people used to hold for people who could read and write and the power of the written word. Thoughts? - Fri, 5 Dec 2008 11:43am
Zedius User Info... | I don't think that basic human nature has changed; people just got wise to the ability to read. Blame it on LeVar Burton? - Fri, 5 Dec 2008 3:38pm
grimlord User Info... | The influence of the powerful and the rich had a hold on people's beliefs and made money from those same papyrus papers . - Fri, 5 Dec 2008 9:15pm

Tyler User Info... | Based on the first word in the body of your message, you've obviously lost respect for the apostrophe. Thoughts? Also, please don't threaten to stab me or anything over this. I'm just joking around. - Sat, 6 Dec 2008 2:28am Edited: Sat, 6 Dec 2008 2:29am
Dan Long User Info... | You know what tyler? You have an excellent point. I did say "we" as a species and i am no exception. I like how you used my words as a joke against me too very funny. Languages fascinate me. - Sat, 6 Dec 2008 3:40am
Doc User Info... | I don't think that we are loosing, or have lost, respect for the spoken and written word, but I do think that with computers, the internet, instant messaging and text messaging, etc. that the written word is changing. I have an uncle who is a high school teacher and last time we spoke we were discussing the declining abilities of today's youth to use propper written english. He showed me some examples of term papers that are handed into him and the writting is truly attrociuos. This is something that I work on with my kids all the time and I encourage other parents, or adult role models, to do as well. ~Keping the world safe from democracy Doc - Sat, 6 Dec 2008 11:14am Edited: Sat, 6 Dec 2008 11:14am

evilkleg User Info... | I'm in complete agreement with you, Dan. In fact, this very topic has been discussed here at livevic before. This forum is a nice little example of how far the general public has fallen in regard to the written word. My cousin is a university prof in Halifax and told me it is so bad these days that she isn't allowed to take marks off term papers for spelling or grammar. She is only allowed to grade content. If she decides to be a hard ass, then she gets a reputation as such and enrollment in her classes goes down. Eventually, she loses her job. So in the end, my cousin has to ask herself what is more important?- forcing students to actually write correctly or paying her rent and putting food on the table? You decide. The worst part is that the degree these students eventually end up with means exactly the same as the degree I have except that mine was way harder to attain. And mine was probably much easier than my parent's degree. In the end, when we are firing out resumes, our little framed piece of paper on the wall means the same thing to a potential employer and my only hope is to crush those illiterate fuckers at the job interview. - Sun, 7 Dec 2008 1:30pm
