Anonymous just who are you, ross bay? what band are you in? - Fri, 8 Nov 2002 3:10pm
Areo The eminem movie starts today.
I don't know the level of sarcasm this thread has, but I genuinely like eminem- and I'm stoked about the movie. Who knows if he can act... but I'll check it out anyways.

I think eminem has legitimized hip-hop music as an art form.
I think he is one of the (if not the) definitive popular artist, and icon, of our time- he is one of few who maintains a position in the popular conscious while breaking new artisic ground. He has reached the top entirely through raw talent (not to take away from other Top 40 acts that work hard, and are talented, but certainly owe a lot of their success to luck).

I challenge anyone who says he isn't a genious. - Fri, 8 Nov 2002 3:29pm

Band? I'm not in no stinkeen' band. Maybe one day I'll learn to play and join a rock and roll quartet, but regretfully not today - Fri, 8 Nov 2002 3:37pm
Zaner I dunno if eminem himself is a genius...but I believe that the eminem/Dr. Dre tag-team-combo are. Dr. Dre for sure has got all his shit together, and he knew exactly what he was doing when he signed Slim. - Fri, 8 Nov 2002 3:43pm
Zaner and he definitely didn't reach the top on pure talent...that boy had Dre and Dre's publicity engine churning out maximum horsepower to get him to the top. Not to mention all the controversy he causes..that didn't hurt him one bit either.

I'm not denying that skinny little piece of shit doesn't have talent though. I really like his new album, and I really like some of Dre's shiat too. Snoop-D-O-doubleG ain't too shabby neither. - Fri, 8 Nov 2002 3:46pm
Areo Dre's production certainly helped eminem out-- but if dre hadn't signed em, em would undoubtably still be a superstar. Dre's credibility helped, but em already had the pure skill necessary to take over the hip-hop world.
Eminem's skills got him to the top (Helped undoubtably by the "look"- which is sadly inescapable in our modern world). - Fri, 8 Nov 2002 3:54pm

"Who knows if he can act..."
you are aware he's playing himself? so there really is no acting involved per say.

I'm interested to see the movie too, though i'll probably wait until it comes out on video rather then pay the 10 bux to see it in theater. I'll save my 10 and go see Lord of the Rings! - Fri, 8 Nov 2002 6:02pm
Areo It would certainly still take acting skill to play yourself in a film. A documentary would be another story, but this film is scripted and rehearsed. - Sun, 10 Nov 2002 4:57am

jason Find a white boy to do a black mans gig and He's gauranteed stardom and respect from shmucks to stupid enough to see the pattern. Dre realizes this. so did the record industry when Elvis came along. anybody remember Vanilla Ice? There's thousands of hip hop artists far more talented than eminem, he just happens to be more marketable because of his skin colour.

And as dar as Areo's comments go, there so mindless I can't help but think your just spouting bullshit to get a response. - Sun, 10 Nov 2002 2:57pm

Areo Given eminem's whiteness helped his career, somewhat, once he overcame the stigma surrounding Vanilla Ice. However, if Eminem was black with the same skill he would undoubtaby be a superstar (maybe not in the NSYNC school of superstardom, but more Snoop Dogg).

Eminem is infinitely more talented than Ice- anyone who has listened to Eminem w/ an open mind could surely recognize. In fact- I honestly feel Eminem is more talented than any rapper today. - Sun, 10 Nov 2002 5:40pm
jason I honestly feel Eminem is more talented than any rapper today.

probably because your knowledge of hip hop begins and ends with mainstream acts. and ofcourse hes better than Vanilla Ice. My grandmother could rap better than Vanilla Ice, and shes been dead for ten years - Sun, 10 Nov 2002 6:45pm
Anonymous eminem can't rap, he's all publicity.. they try to make his mindless, crappy rhymes and annoying voice seem controversial and cool so they can sell it to pre-teen kids. listen to some talib kweli or brand nubian if you want to listen to rap, not eminem - Sun, 10 Nov 2002 9:07pm
Anonymous I saw an interviewer ask eminem what he thinks of the messages delivered in his songs, and he replied "It's just hip-hop, it doesn't mean a thing." - Mon, 11 Nov 2002 12:07am
Areo okay, jason, i've listened to hella rap acts but, no one busts the shit like em:

i have yet to hear any other rapper lay down four syllable rhymes for an entire verse (of 16 bars), and, at the same time, invoke the vulnerability and frustration of kurt cobain.

As far as above mentioned underground acts- I have never heard them, so who knows... but I'm not going to bust my ass doing the job of the A&R guys to find underground talent. I have tried that, but most people with real talent get signed. (I'll still check those people out- what songs??) - Mon, 11 Nov 2002 3:39am
Ike Hey JASON - why don't you bang off a few names of rappers who are as good or better than M&M? Might help your cause. To deny the fact that M&M stands in a leaugue of his own as a rhymer is just plain ignorant man. He's mainstream because he's good. The only person I've heard that can rap and breathe as well as M&M is Busta Rhymes. The kid is creative, original and has busted his ass to get where he is (no, I haven't seen the movie). He may make some fairly moronic statements, but the guy is very good at his craft. It is not a black and white issue and comparing him to Vanilla Ice is like comparing Led Zeppelin to the Michael Bolton Band. Furthermore, suggesting that Dr. Dre sold out his own people, because he recognized the value of a white rapper, is the most moronic thing I've heard in a while (no offence). - Mon, 11 Nov 2002 3:40pm
Areo Hell yes Ike!!

Finally someone who can look past eminem's image.

I figure, calling music shitty based on image takes comparable stupidity to liking music based on image. - Mon, 11 Nov 2002 4:09pm
Areo Ps- I checked out Talib Kweli & Brand Nubian... This shit was nailed down years ago by Jurassic Five. (I like it, but its unoriginal) - Mon, 11 Nov 2002 4:26pm
Bryn I think eminem has legitimized hip-hop music as an art form.
I think he is one of the (if not the) definitive popular artist, and icon, of our time-

Whoa, there... let's not go overboard here. I think that other artists just may have fulfilled those positions long before Eminem came along! The guy is talented and funny as hell, but he sure hasn't re-invented music as we know it! - Mon, 11 Nov 2002 4:44pm
Chuck Yeah well I think Eminem sucks, hey come on I saw him play once I am allowed to say it. But at the same time I find some of his tunes have something to say and I kinda want to at least rent the movie. - Mon, 11 Nov 2002 9:56pm
MD Sorry Areo,

But if I heard ya right, Jurassic 5 nailed down their style way before Brand Nubian? Shit man, check your facts: Brand Nubian's debut dropped in 1990. J5's didn't start to come together until the mid to late '90s.

MD - Tue, 12 Nov 2002 12:22pm
Why oh why??? I wonder if even cared after the first album. The guy could fart and belch into a microphone for 45 minutes and people would still buy it. I'm really not into the whole egotistical aspect of his music. I saw Abstract Rude last week at Soundgarden and that was an amazing show. If you want to talk skill that guy (in my opinion) has MnM beat. - Tue, 12 Nov 2002 2:33pm

Areo Alright, what I meant by saying J5 had it nailed down is that the whole laid back, old school vibe isn't all that original or provoking.

I like it, but it isn't laced with emotion to the degree of Eminem. - Tue, 12 Nov 2002 10:11pm
Areo Hey, hip-hop heads: who is the underground west coast rapper who pronounces the "R"s?

It is a very unique style- but I've looked but can't find out who it is. - Tue, 12 Nov 2002 10:15pm
