Laprider User Info... | ha thought that would grab you...every few months this same where to record debate rages on! here are some things that I think really should be adresed, because they are much more relavent. Recording costs money, whether its the cost of a blank CD to burn the stuff you recorded on a crack of cubase with the computer your parents gave you, living in their house playing your uncles old instrument..total cost about 80 cents! or the alternative major label fifth release after 4 platinum selling previous albums...budget ha unlimited! well someone has to pay....ha again guess what even when your signed every penny spent on recording comes off the top out of your deal...so no HHH isn't splitting 3 mill 4 ways to party! sorry off track...any way bottom line you are paying in the end. Having said that chances are you are not signed and footing the bill upfront yourself...maybe a friend or family coughs up or you have one of those "investors" well for a band or solo act thats money you have to pay out, hoping I would think to at least make it back. So lets take a true capatalistic approach to this and look at the numbers and what they mean. VICPUNKBAND is ready to record they want to make a CD and start the road to fame or whatever they want to do. Lets say they decide to press 1000 copies shrunk wrapped and coded. By the time they are packaged with the bare minimum of artwork you are looking at a w tax cost of lets say on average 2300 bux that means each CD cost you now $2.30 so thats manufacturing cost! recording with scott or gary cost you $1000 buying or renting better gear or whatever cost you $500 you smoked an oz and drank 4 flats $300 the CD now cost you $4.10 Since your indie selling from the stage or losing a commision you sell them for ten bux well you might even if you sell 500 which isn't easy you will recoup your costs. scenario two you are unsigned and go big budget and spend 15,000 at ZG or a vancouver studio. you are still indi still selling from the stage for ten bucks but your CD actually cost you over $15 to make sorry thats dumb math I am not a capatalist by any means...just thought the facts needed some light on them. - Thu, 7 Nov 2002 8:09pm
ML7Mike | You are right. There is no real sense as an indi band recording in a very expensive studio. You probably wont be able to afford the time needed to get a product that reflects the studio's ability. It is an experience to record in a studio like ZG, but the reality is that if all the costs were coming directly out of my pocket, or that of my bandmates, we'd be at Sea Of Shit recording with Scott. There would be no other option. It's just too much money to put out. - Thu, 7 Nov 2002 8:32pm
laprider User Info... | hey ML7 mike just want to make it clear none of this is directed to your band, just my opinion. You guys have been around since I moved back here in the early nineties and if not anything at least deserve the opportunity to have recorded in a proper studio just for the experience of it if not anything else. although metal too me is Ted nugent free for all I always dug you the few times I saw you. - Thu, 7 Nov 2002 9:11pm
ML7Mike | Cool Lap.. nah I know you just have a good grasp of recording. It something I like to discuss.. and also something I need to learn alot more about. I feel lucky to get to experience true analog recording, having already gone the digital route. These days too the metal scene is leaning heavily towards expensive production methods. It makes it really hard for an unsigned band in this genre to compete. - Thu, 7 Nov 2002 9:29pm
shortfall User Info... | I hear ya Laprider, We just went through a similar thing. Come check out our CD release show at soundgarden on the 21st. For a vic punk outfit I think (hope) we gots our selves a half decent recording. - Thu, 7 Nov 2002 9:35pm
Tommy | "It makes it really hard for an unsigned band in this genre to compete" That's right. We're recording at Electric Mountain because we want the big 2" analog sound, yet we don't want to roll over to Van or spend mega bucks somewhere else. There is no other alternative that I can see. - Thu, 7 Nov 2002 10:41pm
ML7Mike | And I bet you get a good sound out of there Tommy. I already know of two other metal bands going there and one rock band. Cool to see that studio is getting yet another metal band.. What band would that be? - Fri, 8 Nov 2002 3:30am
trick turner User Info... | Yea. Recording is always a bitch. We just finished recording our own CD with the use of condensor mics, a mackie board, and a digital 8 track. We spent our recording money on our own equipment. Now we can wake up and record when ever we feel its all good. No pressure with going into a studio, and it must be done right in a matter of time. There is no time limit. Once everything is recorded as good as can be, wire it into Cakewalk Pro Audio 9, spend a few nights smokin' bats and drinkin beerz with a wizard who knows music and the program, and the rest is history. I tell ya, Best fuckin decision we ever made. Trust me, it takes money to make money, but isn't it nice to know all that $$$ is invested into your own recording equipment?? Fuckin' eh. - Fri, 8 Nov 2002 3:48am
Bog Boppa | I belive DIzzy are building dey own studio too - Fri, 8 Nov 2002 11:50am
virge User Info... | "you smoked an oz and drank 4 flats $300" where you you get your beer and smoke? tell me! :D - Fri, 8 Nov 2002 12:06pm
Ryan | 2" sounds great, but damn expensive tape. - Fri, 8 Nov 2002 12:12pm
josh User Info... | It is possible today to get very high quality recordings at basement studios, and it's always possible to get crap at a real studio. The difference is having someone in there who understands production. You can get gold for very cheap if you can get someone in there producing who understands recording and production techniques, or you can have all the expensive gear you want, and it won't make a difference if you don't know how to use it. There are certain areas of a recording that make or break it, like source mic choice, drum tuning, input preamp choice, guitar source sounds, room sound, and many others where you can cut corners to save money. Mixing can be done on a PC and be very comparable, just stay away from the cheap effects plugins that leave digital artifacts. If your gonna steal software, steal quality. The difference in getting a good recording cheap is knowing where to cut corners and where to spend money. Or course the studios are going to tell you that you can't get quality in a basement, it's in their interests as a business. - Fri, 8 Nov 2002 1:12pm
green thumb | weed is grown in the great outdoors to supply us all year round, and beer is botled by the batch at the local beer making place. better than sleemans no lie, and cheapest too - Fri, 8 Nov 2002 1:27pm
more truth | also don't forget 'mixing' and 'mastering' two very important parts to a good product. also don't get them confused with recording cost. - Fri, 8 Nov 2002 8:28pm
and even more | does anyone out there know of any duplication places. we are looking at 500-1000 copies . also stickers ..... good ones not those 'fade quick' ones ML7 has ..... good quality stickers. - Fri, 8 Nov 2002 8:32pm
Mr. Hell User Info... | I gotta say this...you get what you pay for. We paid jack all and you all get them for free. We are also looking for non-fade stickers for cheap. - Fri, 8 Nov 2002 9:59pm
laprider | well locally you see an add in monday but I have never received a response from them, pacific music marketing that is...not very good business practice in my opinion. I would recommend cdmanufacturing.ca you can get an instant online quote, they are fast and manufacture properly back east. just remember burning CDs is not the same process as pressing! - Fri, 8 Nov 2002 10:33pm
ML7Mike | Ya those fade quick ones are about $135 cdn, including shipping for 1000 stickers.. - Fri, 8 Nov 2002 11:07pm
