Message Board > General Chitchat > A few words about the controversy surrounding the 'Death To Roctoria show' |
BrandXMedia User Info... | Alright, Ive stood back and resisted posting for some time now but things have gotten somewhat out of hand. First off the Death to Rocktoria title wasnt fueled by dislike, resentment and especially not hatred. When conceptualizing the show, we discussed having a tribute, or eulogy of sorts, because we were so disappointed that Rocktoria wasnt in full form this year as opposed to the previous years. I happen to own the whole collection of Rocktoria CDs since 1992. Each album is innovative, original and blaring with an amazing level of talent and ingenuity. Since my first Rocktoria CD purchase I have not found one song that hasnt captured my imagination, given me a sense of euphoria, and inspired me to rummage through my closet and dust off my air guitar. It is as if the judges who pick out the bands are given help by some sort of divine intervention that gives them supernatural powers to pick the most talented people on the island and somehow compress then down to a 72 minute CD. It is miraculous to say the least. So, all of you who have become offended by this statement, please refrain from making any more slanderous, hurtful or mean spirited remarks. Perhaps the wording was a little off, and perhaps we should have called it something like lest we forget Rocktoria or There Is No Sweeter Teat Then Rocktoria, or Rocktoria Executives Are Gods Amongst Swine. I actually tried to lobby city council to rename this beautiful city Rocktoria, as opposed to the old boring Victoria weve been living in for so long. Unfortunatly due to the timely process, nothing has happened of it as of yet. Well, I hope this clears a few things up. Thank You. If you would like to share your condolences, please feel free to come down to Logans Pub on June 6th, and bring tissue and flowers and 6 bucks for the cover charge. all proceeds will go towards feeding starving musicians (Dylan Davis being the skinniest so far). http://www.brandxmedia.org - Sat, 24 May 2003 8:21pm

Criss Crass | I'm pretty skinny do I qualify? Anyways bring $6 to Logan's on the sixth. For less than the price of a cup of coffee a day you could feed cloth and shelter a starving metalhead/punk rocker. Please give. - Sat, 24 May 2003 9:44pm

Anonymous | Backpeddle, backpeddle, backpeddle... You're a fucking liar Brand X... where are your fucking convictions when the city turns on you. You stupid fucking ass... you hate Rocktoria, and all the bands on it... if this really was a "memorial", why wouldn't you book bands that either a) have been on a comp, or b) could be (ie radio-friendly)... you're just scared toat too many people will boycot, you little twat. - Sun, 25 May 2003 5:04pm

BrandXMedia User Info... | Well anonymous posters don't usually get the time of day from me, but this one was both blatantly ignorant and amusing at the same time. So I'll respond. Q) You're a fucking liar Brand X... where are your fucking convictions when the city turns on you. A) Nobody really turned on me. A lot of great bands really wanted to play, and couldn't fit on the bill. Some even suggested doing death to rocktoria regularly. Four times a year to be specific. I very much look forward to booking many of the bands that have come forth wanting to play. Q) you hate Rocktoria, and all the bands on it A) Sarcasm is said to be a fools whit. So what do I call a person who doesnt even understand sarcasm? Q)... if this really was a "memorial", why wouldn't you book bands that either a) have been on a comp, or b) could be (ie radio-friendly)... you're just scared toat too many people will boycott, you little twat." A) Why would I want these bands to play? I have a firm belief that radio-friendly is usually a term that applies to bands that sound generic and/or watered down. This doesnt apply to all bands, but a hell of a lot of them. If you like it, why should I care? I find "the mainstream" dull, but if that's where you feel safe: go ahead. As for the boycott comment; what would happen if I did get boycotted? Im not making money off of this, so theres not much chance I could lose money on this either, is there? I do it to support artists of all mediums, and help those who deserve exposure get some, if it be someone with a can of krylon paint or someone with a guitar in their hands. You are more than welcome to go somewhere else. I for one am going to have a great time and enjoy some great bands. Thanks for your creative critisism. - Sun, 25 May 2003 5:47pm

Trixie | Geez louise, you know when someone hates what your doing that much, you know your at least doing something interesting. But i suppose if the show wasn't called Death To Rocktoria at all, and was called something else like Smurf o' Rama, there'd be someone harping on ya to leave the poor ole smurfs alone too. - Mon, 26 May 2003 12:30pm
Kyle User Info... | Re: who's playing- Woolly Mammoth - search for them at http://www.newmusiccanada.com (where they are described as alt rock). Meldodic fuzz toned rock. Hank Pine and Lily Fawn (of the Whelps)- weird country/folk/? - they usually play with David P. Smith, master of the hardcordian. This pair may be joined by Ryan from Chet Immaculate Machine - rock/pop - drums, keyboard, guitar. All 3 of them sing. Good melodic stuff. They have a CD out called "the view". Children of Celebrities - roots country/bluegrass/folk (not to sure what they'd describe themselves as, but they rule.) C.O.C. were the highlight of our Tom Waits tribute in March. Gashly Crumb - heavy rock. Fuzzy guitar, loud thick bass. Doesn't come across that great here but: http://www.brandxmedia.org/mp3s/Gashley_crumb_-_Anti-conceivable.MP3 The first gig with our new drummer man Dave (from the Papillomas) Self Inflicted - Metal/Hardcore, along the lines of Chaos AD era Sepultura http://www.bozobits.com/selfinflicted/media/mp3/crimescene.mp3 They also love puppies. And there's no real explaination for Steve Lang... Cheers - Mon, 26 May 2003 12:38pm
Anon386 | "So, all of you who have become offended by this statement, please refrain from making any more slanderous, hurtful or mean spirited remarks. " hmm.. And you can carry on offending with your terrible title! Remarks made on this board are just opinions and meant to be provocative at times. Certainly when someone has made a personal jab and then mentions the Death show as being cool it has brought negative attention back. Songs are radio friendly. Not bands. Not people. - Mon, 26 May 2003 12:46pm

" back to what I said earlier "Sarcasm is said to be a fools whit. So what do I call a person who doesnt even understand sarcasm?" You really ought to cheer up. If you try to please everybody, you're basically striving for boredom. People love to be offended. Why else would they do it so much? - Mon, 26 May 2003 2:45pm
Anon386 | LOL. You sound like me. All I have been doing is taking a specific viewpoint on a topic. Your show has now received plenty of attention from this board at least. Not sure if it will matter one way or the other. Probably not. I'm done with this now anyway. Time to wreak havoc somewhere else. - Mon, 26 May 2003 3:05pm

John Shields | It's not often that I visit. I find that the most of the comments found here are as negative as any issue of Monday Magazine. The difference of course is that Monday Magazine isn't anonymous. I know..."fuck off"! Before I do just a few words...Thank you for the kind words BrandXMedia! We appreciate all comments, good or bad...as long as they aren't personal attacks, we take them all into consideration. In the past, many negative comments regarding Roctoria have been made on this board, suggesting in one way or another that Rocktoria was some form of "animal waste". This is why I'm suprised and pleased. I find it refreshing that someone has felt that Rocktoria deserves a tribute. For the record, I'm certainly not offended by the title. My only comment is that it's misleading. Rocktoria is NOT dead (some will argue that it died long ago)! For the past 15 years, Rocktoria has always tried to reinvent itself, exploring and searching for productive and positive ways to support the music industry. We will continue to do so.If you have any comments or suggestions on how Rocktoria can evolve in the future, or how we can better support the local music industry, please contact me directly. If you would like to offer some critical observations, by all means, contact me directly. I know...I know....Fuck off! I will and...Thank you. - Thu, 29 May 2003 12:55pm

Zippgunn User Info... | Wow, John Shields on LiveVic!!! OK John some hard questions. 1. Tell us the REAL reason, from the horse's mouth, why Rocktoria is staged yearly. (The big one) 2. Name ANY band on a Rocktoria CD that has gone anywhere and done anything (there's one or two I think) 3. Has any Rocktoria band ever signed a major label deal? 4. How many bands have appeared on Rocktoria CD's? 5. Would there even be a Rocktoria if it were not for the CRTC? 6. Why oh why did you get involved with the MPower awards? 7. How do you figure out who will record your CD's? 8. What charities benefit from Rocktoria and how much $ can they realistically expect to get from this event? 9. Before they signed with Warners, had you even heard of Hot Hot Heat? I think these are all fair questions and I'm sure all of the LiveVic regulars would be most interested in honest answers to them. _Griphin_ User Info... | I chatted once with the guy who did the Rocktoria comps, and asked the same question about why didn't any bands survive and get big record contracts. I was told that the bands had to take the initiative to market themselves, and that the Rocktoria appearance was a good way to do just that. That make sense? - Fri, 6 Jun 2003 4:37pm
Anonymous | well hell, maybe you can ask one of them tonight? I'm sure there will be a spy or two. - Fri, 6 Jun 2003 9:13pm
Advocate | Zippgunn - Wow, John Shields on LiveVic!!! OK John some hard questions. Who cares about John... you know the answers or should. 1. Tell us the REAL reason, from the horse's mouth, why Rocktoria is staged yearly. (The big one) Maybe the same reason we have Canada Day once / year or the Juno's. 2. Name ANY band on a Rocktoria CD that has gone anywhere and done anything (there's one or two I think) Special Guests have done more than most rock bands from Victoira. Many of the players in Rocktoria bands still peform and or record. 3. Has any Rocktoria band ever signed a major label deal? Is there a correlation here? Rocktoria is not billed as predict the next commercially viable music group. 4. How many bands have appeared on Rocktoria CD's? They seem to have 2 or 3 each time.. x ten years. 5. Would there even be a Rocktoria if it were not for the CRTC? Would we even listen to any canadian music if there wasn't. The radio station is a business that follows rules. 6. Why oh why did you get involved with the MPower awards? They were asked. Plus this way they couldn't be slagged for being overly self serving with their selections. Why not let the music community partake. That is the non-snob music community who isn't bitter with commericalism. 7. How do you figure out who will record your CD's? The latest compilation won't even have studios do recording. The artists must submit the songs. 8. What charities benefit from Rocktoria and how much $ can they realistically expect to get from this event? The Q web site has details. TLC is the acronym. I think with not having studio time to pay for there is a good chance for more money to be raised. 9. Before they signed with Warners, had you even heard of Hot Hot Heat? Why would a rock station pay any attention to them? Most people hadn't heard of them until this and even until SubPop picked them up they were in obscurity. That's how it works. Duh. - Fri, 6 Jun 2003 9:35pm
uhh... | so were almost all of the bands that got on rocktoria anyway. the only reason anyone ever heard of any of those bands at all was because they got on it. - Fri, 6 Jun 2003 10:06pm
