Gazebo Tree User Info... | "Canada falls behind in basic worker benefits" "Doesn't measure up to other countries on sick leave, vacation time and breastfeeding breaks But a new McGill University study indicates that Canada lags behind many other countries on some basic worker benefits. The school's Institute for Health and Social Policy conducted recently an international survey that is the first research of its type to measure Canadian laws and practices vs. those of 180 other countries in such areas as maternity leave, annual paid vacations, sick leave and breaks for breastfeeding mothers. The Work Equity Canada (WECan) index, conducted by the institute's Jody Heymann, Martine Chaussard and Megan Gerecke, found Canada scores well for having policies that guarantee paid leave to care for dependents with serious illnesses. But Canada fared worse in other areas" © The Gazette (Montreal) 2008 You can read the rest of it at this link - http://working.canada.com/victoria/resources/story.html?id=03c21686-12c7-4e4d-b31b-768b436fe6e7 The Full Study is here - http://www.mcgill.ca/files/ihsp/WorkEquityCanada.pdf - Mon, 15 Sep 2008 9:22pm
BBJones User Info... | That's probably becuase union's have sucked all possible cash out of employers already. In otherwords, the pot is empty. Go get free shit somewhere else. - Tue, 16 Sep 2008 9:37am
lonemonk User Info... | You might be right BBJ but labour laws in general should be written by government that give everyone working a better base-line for good benefits, annual leave minimums and acceptable wages so that unions wouldn't have as much traction. Perhaps if people were happier in their jobs in general there wouldn't be such a need to even form a union. Of course modern governments tend to side with the business owners so workers feel like fucking the employer is the only choice. As the article later mentions, self-employed people have very little to rely on. My dad worked for 30 years, had a heart attack, started a business that was ultimately destroyed by weather and no eligibility for any past EI contributions. Anyway, the government is more fucked than the employer/union struggle. - Thu, 18 Sep 2008 9:52pm Edited: Thu, 18 Sep 2008 10:00pm
Hearse User Info... | "union's" Yeah... countries with higher levels of benefits obviously have un-unionized workforces so the employers are able to give them more... out of the goodness of their hearts. Welcome to planet "That doesn't make any fucking sense at all." Population: You. - Fri, 19 Sep 2008 7:55am
lonemonk User Info... | That's why it's the government that would have to have balls, but alas they do not. What I was getting at was to take the decision making on whether employees are treated well or not AWAY from the employer/union conversation and make sure everyone gets reasonable treatment. - Fri, 19 Sep 2008 9:42am
