Gleamer User Info... | I never went to soundgarden, I never saw anyone I'd have liked to have seen playing there. I guess its a shame not having another venue in town but I can't say that I personally will miss it. Steamers never has good bands. There are alot of other bars but there is one that I find to be the saving grace of victoria. Thursdays, or Logan's (shakes head), has been an indie staple in victoria for a long time and they have most of the bases covered in my opinion. They have a great staff, good music and what I consider to be reasonable prices for the services they provide. The only one critisism I have of Thursdays is that with the name change I hope there comes some maintenance improvements. by that I mean making the place really nice to come to. I think it's agreed upon (maybe I'm wrong) that dispite the cool nature of Thursdays it could do with some TLC. Therefore I propose that it hold several nights of really good 10 dollar shows with the best of local talent. With the majority of the money going to renovations on the newly named bar. What does everyone think? - Wed, 16 Apr 2003 7:33pm
Anonymous | Ya sure, I'd be up for it... just as soon as John returns my old Timex wind up that dropped under the side of the stage one night. - Wed, 16 Apr 2003 7:58pm
LOVe it | he already sold it to me though - Wed, 16 Apr 2003 8:07pm
Curious George | That sounds like a great idea! - Wed, 16 Apr 2003 8:34pm
Big Leath | sounds like a shitty idea to me. im not paying 5 extra dollars so thursdays can be prettier, let alone for "local talent" (when was the last time anyone here paid more than 6 dollars for a show that had only local bands?) - Wed, 16 Apr 2003 9:29pm
Chris Logan User Info... | Thanks for the idea, Gleamer, although I don't know how many people would be as generous as you. We're actually beginning renovations this week, starting with the floor. I don't know if it'll be pretty, but it'll be a lot better than the 20 year old carpet (though there are a lot of memories soaked into that carpet, I'm sure). - Wed, 16 Apr 2003 10:03pm
Anonymous | Big Leath: Um. Like, Hot Hot Heat, Nelly Furtado, David Foster, etc? - Wed, 16 Apr 2003 10:17pm
Livevic Scott User Info... | While we're on the topic of renovation at the Logan house .. whats going on with the old pool room? its been blocked off for months now?? I know you got some kind of plan for it but what?? - Wed, 16 Apr 2003 10:59pm
Chris Logan User Info... | We're putting in craps and blackjack tables. - Wed, 16 Apr 2003 11:15pm
Chris Logan User Info... | Actually we're still waiting on approval to expand into that space. Ideally we want to put in a new band room and use the rest for the crowd. It took us four years to get our new license, though... - Wed, 16 Apr 2003 11:16pm
Livevic Scott User Info... | well i'm rootin for ya! .. more crowd space would be ideal. - Wed, 16 Apr 2003 11:25pm
Gleamer User Info... | alright, as long as something cool is being done then I'm fine. The idea is similar to what the brickyard, in vancouver, did. They were also a vancouver indie bar that had great bands. But the brickyard had a worse atmosphere than Thursdays and also they had bad sound. So bands played for free to raise money for improvements. Thursdays doesn't have bad sound but anything done to it could only make it better. - Thu, 17 Apr 2003 5:19pm
XY-SATAN User Info... | I've said it once ,I'll say it twice Thursdays (or whatever) have been nothing but excellent to my wife and I, thank you for the drinks I"ll buy the next ones ! LOL ! And I'm looking forward to seeing the changes ,and the great staff! And Chris if you need to get the shows known post them here ,Im the moderator in the Victoria section http://www.secretarcade.com or e-mail me your show list and Ill put them up when the shows are getting close . - Thu, 17 Apr 2003 5:45pm
Livevic Scott User Info... | moderator? whats that *laugh* =) - Thu, 17 Apr 2003 5:54pm
XY-SATAN | You should get a dictionary and look it up there Scott ! LOL ! And by the way, I have no problem with posting a link to this site over there man ! - Thu, 17 Apr 2003 6:09pm
Anon386 | Gleamer, your statements are ridiculous and idiotic. It's not about your taste for pretentious keyboard art experimental music that matters. Now that Soundgarden is gone expect to see lots of your favourite bands you've never seen or heard making appearances in Logan's. - Thu, 17 Apr 2003 6:44pm
Anonymous | Where did he mention "pretentious keyboard art experimental music that matters"? - Thu, 17 Apr 2003 6:58pm
Anon386 | Nowhere... i just thought I would shoot of some equally stupid and meaningless comments. - Thu, 17 Apr 2003 8:11pm
Livevic Scott User Info... | *laugh* nah post away with the links I was mostly refering to our complete lack of moderators on this site =) - Thu, 17 Apr 2003 8:31pm
Tim User Info... | I've played thursdays a few times, had a blast every time, but the only complaint I have is that compared to what soundgarden had and what Lucky has, unfortunately it does have bad sound. A better sound system would do absolute wonders for this bar, as the atmosphere is pretty cool. - Thu, 17 Apr 2003 8:38pm
KnifeGhost User Info... | I'm a sucker for Thur-- Logan's, I love the place... It would be amazing to get the other part of the joint up and running... Although I've got a few solid months of memories in front of that stage.... - Thu, 17 Apr 2003 8:46pm
Gleamer User Info... | I tried not to tie my own personal tastes in music to the discussion. aside from focusing on Thursdays I think I did that. However you seem to be under the impression that I require musicians to be crying and wearing tight pants to enjoy them. If you need to hear who I enjoy seeing within victoria it comes down to Ghosts, Chet, Run Chico Run, Pauline Sniff Sniff, Frog Eyes (and BR and the CC: Carey Mercer), FMusa and Cut Killos. And from my perspective the main venue in which to see these people is Thursdays pub. I don't know why I'm being insulted and chastized, all I said was that I would like to see renovations done to improve the bar and I proposed a possible way to facilitate it. - Thu, 17 Apr 2003 10:07pm
KnifeGhost User Info... | Gleamer: Sounds like we go to the same shows..... Have you seen The Fine Options, or any of the iterations of Wooly Mammoth? Great stuff.... - Thu, 17 Apr 2003 10:38pm
Anon386 | Gleamer, you said Steamers never has good bands. Kind of harsh don't you think? Escpecially considering how they have been supporting local music for years and are very fair with paying etc. In fact, some of the bands you mentioned have played there. Soundgarden was very open to independent artists and were not overly selective with their bookings. They also hosted bands that have played shows at Thursday's. - Thu, 17 Apr 2003 10:45pm
ROSS B AY User Info... | Steamers is for frat kids. University free-ride people. That aint' no shit neither. Not once have I ever heard of a band playing there that I wanted to check. I played there once and didn't even feel comfortable. That's cool though - every city needs their frat bar with beer commercial bands in it. They don't know how much punkers and metal heads spend on booze though. A little variety would be cool down there. Hell, even SG had rapper bands and DJ's and shit. Perhaps they should hold one - just one - punk/metal show and see how much bling they pull. Then maybe there'd be some cross-over music fans hanging out and drinking a few together (rock/emo folks pounding with metal/hxc people). I'd like to see that. I love college whores. - Thu, 17 Apr 2003 11:03pm
Gleamer User Info... | Yeah, I'm not trying to put down steamers. In fact your probably right, saying they never have any good bands would imply that my own opinion is fact, which its not. It wasn't my intention to force my opinion on others, however, I too have never seen a show being held at steamers that I felt compelled to go to. SoundGarden had one show once that I wanted to go to but didn't because I didn't feel it was worth the effort. But all I heard about recently was the Swollen Members playing there and bands of the same ilk, which I just don't care to see at all. As for the sugestions, I dislike the fine options, to me they just aren't good music. I will look out for the other band though, the wooly mammoths (sp). - Fri, 18 Apr 2003 2:05am
Anonymous | I have seen, chet and the fine options play at steamers. The sound was great and I think that with a little more effort that bar could become even more diverse in the crowd. It was a good time, but some of the staff suck. - Fri, 18 Apr 2003 3:26am
beavis christ | geez, I feel a little compelled to put in a good word for steamers. The staff have always been cool to deal with and I've seen some wicked shows there. Good variety of people. (Maybe I've just gone on weird nights?) The point about a lack of punk/metal shows there is true though..guess they just want to keep a groove thing on, though it's always nice to get a variety of artists through. Whatever sells the beer, I guess. Hasn't Sugar put on some live music? hehe... - Fri, 18 Apr 2003 5:13am
Anon386 | We are fortunate to have several good venues in this city. Regardless of which is the best they are all reasonably open to various forms of music. Steamers being a regular pub does seem to draw the line somewhere down the scale of alternative and hardcore. Thursdays certainly picks up this segment of the market. The bottom line is that Victoria bars will collectively host just about anyone and local independent bands are able to play on any given night with equal access as larger acts. All you have to do is draw and be professional. If anything, we need an exclusive ( or close ) metal/hardcore/punk bar. Soundgarden was covering some of this. - Fri, 18 Apr 2003 11:55am
stank ass | Legends fucking sucks. They dicked us on a pub crawl last night. Although the fight that broke out because of it was pretty funny. - Fri, 18 Apr 2003 12:56pm

Anonymous | We need and all metal venue with a Punk wednesday and a sold out sunday. Then all of us metalheads don't have to hang out at shitty punk bars and worse top 40 clubs. Plus we don't have to drink at home just to hear some carcass. Hell a venue with a metal night that played real metal and not just korn and offspring(evolutions) and although Pantera would be played often there would be a 'no walk' policy and cemetary gates would only be played at the beginning of the night. And the Dj would know who In Flames were and that children of bodom are not a coffee pot(evolutions, true story). And we need a venue that when we request to hear some slayer we are not told it is too heavy(Soundgarden, 20 mins before a metal show). And where Guns'n'Roses is discussed but not played every other song(thursdays). What we need is someone who likes metal(and punk, cause I know you guys get screwed too) to open a bar so we can go to a club/bar/venue and hear the music we actually want to listen to. There is evolutions for all those people who think Korn and Limp Bizkit are hardcore and that playing Eminem for the last song at a metal bar on a metal monday is totally acceptable. - Fri, 18 Apr 2003 3:55pm
Chris Logan User Info... | Someone plays Guns and Roses at (the bar formerly known as) Thursdays? - Fri, 18 Apr 2003 6:31pm
Anonymous | Last time I was there I heard sweet child, paradise city, and welcome to the jungle in the 30 mins before a show with shivs, jak uzi and gallows end. I remember because no one was drunk yet and one of the band members (which band ?) sat there and bitched at us about all the reasons why GNR suck, just to finish off by telling us that illusions 2 was one of the best albums of all time. It was funny shit, but no more GNR please - Fri, 18 Apr 2003 8:11pm
scream for me fernwood | I've heard the first Iron Maiden album being played in there a few times - Fri, 18 Apr 2003 8:53pm
Anonymous | I have deffinately heard some good stuff, but that is the problem, nowhere can you go and hear just good stuff. One or two shitty songs is fine, but one or two good songs is victorias scene. - Fri, 18 Apr 2003 9:05pm

Chris Logan User Info... | Our bartenders bring their own CDs, so every shift is different, but I'd totally be into doing a metal night or a punk night or whatever--our Mondays are free right now. Not the best night of the week, I know... - Sat, 19 Apr 2003 1:39am
Anonymous | I'd go to a metal monday if it didn't suck, that would rule. - Sat, 19 Apr 2003 2:12am
Chris Logan User Info... | Anyone who could do this on Mondays at Logan's? - Sat, 19 Apr 2003 2:42am
Trailer Park Boy Julian | Alls I know is Thursday's (Logan's) is pretty cool by Victoria standards - and I DON'T mean that as a slag. Sure the sound, sightlines, blah blah could be better but you know what that place has going for it? INTIMACY!! That's the same thing that made my ol' stomping grounds in Vancouver - The Pic and the Brickyard (Circa 1997 - 2001)- soooooo fuckin' good. I like "Logan's" alot and I think they have a pretty damn good mix of musical styles playing there. In fact, when I moved back to Victoria last year I was pretty impressed with the atmosphere at Thursday's. It reminded of the cooler places in Van - like the Pic, Brickyard, Marine Club, the 'Balt, the Columbia, and EVEN the Railway club - 'cept for them punk assed uptight university kids!! ;-) They're the only thing that's kinda annoying about "Logan's" - but that's hardly the fault of the venue and more of a statement about Victoria's "scene". Anyway, it would be sweet if there were more r'n'r, rockabilly, country, punk, hardcore, metal, AND hip hop shows and less "indie" rock... but's that's just my preference and I know Vic is more of an University town (hence the "indie" rock emo thing) so's I might be dreaming.... Which leads me to the second part of my rant - which has nothing to do with "Logan's" - what is with the obsession with "indie" rock in Victoria - I just don't get it... I guess I like music with more BALLS.... Fuck - vive la difference I guess.... - Sat, 19 Apr 2003 3:42am
Anon386 | Julian its all about the money.. sort of. Chicks in general don't buy metal or punk albums because the music just doesn't appeal to them. Too narrow in emotional range. So why would they go watch metal or punk? If there are no girls at the shows then why should anyone else go? Yeah sure there are always the usual so called music lovers who insist on categorizing bands but the rest of of the populous avoids the venues unless there is a chance of procreation. Monday it is unless your category Metal, Punk or other basic genre dabbles in pop. Country can find a home in esquimalt unless a hot singer shows up on the scene. For that matter get any hot chick.. even one in a so called "indie" rock band and even you might be at the show. - Sat, 19 Apr 2003 4:15am
Trailer Park Boy Julian | Anon - sooooo sad but soooo true in a way.... It always seems to come back to that sex thing.... ;-) It's a sad statement really.... Anyway, I know my fair share of women who are down with that shit - that's is EXACTLY what makes 'em that much sexier.... - Sat, 19 Apr 2003 4:29am
Trailer Park Boy Julian | ...oh yeah... I wanted to say I don't care about "hot chicks" in bands... for example, I think Neko Case and Kim Shattuck are babes who happen to play music that I dig... but I NEVER go to shows 'cause there's a "hot" chick in the band.... - Sat, 19 Apr 2003 4:55am
Trailer Park Boy Julian | ...though those two "Devil Dolls" who "perform" with Big John Bate's are worth the price of admission alone... and then some!! ;-) - Sat, 19 Apr 2003 5:05am

Gleamer | Well whatever, your in the band so you decide whether it exists or not. I don't just go when you're going, I've been alot more than twice. No I'm not of age, (gasp), but I'm closer to being of age than you. - Sat, 19 Apr 2003 8:56pm
Gleamer User Info... | and no I don't listen to emo. - Sat, 19 Apr 2003 8:58pm
Anonymous | regardless of wheather they exist or not they have never produced anything musical for you to listen to, let alone played a show that you could have seen in victoria, making you (a) a liar, or (b) crazy. - Sat, 19 Apr 2003 9:52pm
Gleamer User Info... | no, thats a lie. There was at one point demos posted on the cut killos site. they were created on one of the members' computer and did not feature any of the musicians but they were on the cut killos site. Secondly, it was a joke. Get over yourself. - Sat, 19 Apr 2003 11:22pm
Dane User Info... | What I'd really like to see is a venue that has an excellent built in soundsystem; and good capacity potential (700 - 800). But then you could have a set up where you could reduce the size of the room to fit 300 - 500. Sight lines should be good with the ceiling high enough to feel like you have a lot of space around you. Time and thought needs to go into the venue so that it would be built with good taste. We've needed a place like that forever. The venue should also be close to town. It should be able to accomodate both all ages and licenced events where we could come and see acts of interest. I suppose that's pretty hard to do but it's very possible. For all ages events, a rental fee would be established. It may be higher than other places but those using the space would be using it for events where they would need to accomodate more persons anyway. For a licensed show, rates could be negotiated based on numbers brought into the bar and other factors. In some cases fees could be waved depending on numbers and revenue generated at the bar. Then there could be some small food service at the venue as well or the group organizing the show could bring in their own. - I guess I'm basically asking for a smaller Commodore Ballroom that could also be made into a smaller venue depending on the act. I remember we've brought in food service into bars that did not have one of their own. We did when we brought in Justin Hinds and the Dominoes from Jamaica to town in 1998 at the Limit. At the time there was a Caribbean restaurant called Blackstreet and Gold Cafe and Catering. They sold Jamaican patties and other nibblies. At the Buju Banton show in Vancouver the Caribbean Restaurant, Nice and Spicy were selling yummy stuff there too. - Sat, 19 Apr 2003 11:57pm
Gleamer User Info... | yeah that would be ideal. its hard to get things perfect though. do you know if it could be done where one side of the stage is in a bar setting and the other is a walled off all ages section? sort of like one of those resteraunts with a bar area only it wouldn't be a resteraunt. - Sun, 20 Apr 2003 12:28am
Dane User Info... | It could be like that, but the other section wouldn't have to be limited to be just an all ages section and vice versa. A licenced event could make use of the space if needed. It cool when there's less division between all ages and licenced events. It would be cool if there were more big all ages shows (especially with beer gardens) but it is often not financially feasible because of the costs of sound and rental fees. This is why a place with a good built in soundsystem would eliminate that cost obstacle somewhat (perhaps enough to get more higher profile bands more often for more people to enjoy of all ages). And although it's hard to get things perfect, I think something like that could be done. For someone that has the money in a small city like this that will grow slowly but surely, it would be such a smart investment. - Sun, 20 Apr 2003 12:37am
Chris Logan User Info... | Good idea, but you can't have all ages/licensed venues in BC. A bar can do a certain number of all ages shows a year, but you can't serve alcohol. So, no wet/dry stamps or separate wet/dry areas at the same time. - Sun, 20 Apr 2003 3:34am
Livevic Scott User Info... | Basicly it sounds like you want a place like "The Exchange" in Regina... and as it would be totally ideal as Chris said with the way the BC Liquor laws are you can't do it =( Does anyone know (Chris or other bar owners on this one?) if you could have a venue where it worked like a beer garden? 2 floors, the bottom AA and the mezzanine bar. You would have like one door to the main floor of the venue and then have a second door (the 19+ door) going to the mezzanine which would serve liquor. I'm THINKING that wouldn't work just because i'm sure someone would have thought of it if it would work, but it'd be cool. Or better yet have the whole thing just be a bar but for special events (ie big shows) pull the liquor licence for the bottom floor and make it just the mezzanine what had the licence, or vice versa? If the place was set up kinda like Richards on Richards you could probably have a pretty decent capacity on the Mezzanine and you could bring in a good crowd of youngins to help get the numbers needed for the expencive acts. - Sun, 20 Apr 2003 3:41am
Dane User Info... | Yeah Scott. That could work. Both the Esquimalt Recreation Centre and the Victoria Curling Club can do that kind of set-up if requested. But I guess for a place that is an actual bar as Chris pointed out you couldn't do it given the current BC Liquor Laws. But it would be worth looking into! The set-up Richards on Richards has would be cool too. It would be so nice if something like what we're all talking about could happen one day. I remember Atomique was trying to get the Curling Club to be like that about 4 years ago. Remember they called it "The Central" but I imagine the expenses were still too high to keep it going on a regular basis especially if there was the odd show that didn't get the numbers desired for breaking even. It is such a big space (Curling Club) and you still have to bring in all the equipment, sound and security everytime. Even if you can bring your expenses down because you some of your own equipment or you use the hall more often; even with those factors in your favour, a space like that would be tough to keep up on a regular basis for sure. Good for them for trying though. Maybe they or someone else will again. By the way Scott - HAPPY EASTER BRO! - Sun, 20 Apr 2003 7:29am
