MindlessMikeyJay User Info... | I know this is a les paul but does anyone know what make it might be? The only thing its says is made in japan and it seems pretty old. Its hard to see by the picture but does anyone have an idea.. i just picked it up from a friend. It has a gibson headstock but i am stumped http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l18/milesbeneath/electric.jpg?t=1212536328 - Tue, 3 Jun 2008 4:40pm Edited: Tue, 3 Jun 2008 4:41pm
superslacks User Info... | You'll have to post more info if you want an informed response. ie: does it actually say "Gibson" or is it just a Gibson style headstock? Bolt on neck, I'm assuming? Any info under the electronics plate? It's obviously not Gibson if it's made in Japan. Looks like a '70's lawsuit guitar, maybe Ibanez or Mann - Tue, 3 Jun 2008 4:54pm
MindlessMikeyJay User Info... | It doesnt say gibson Any where... it just has the same head type as a gibson does.. and the neck isnt a bolt on. But i have had a few people say a lawsuit. - Wed, 4 Jun 2008 9:31am
GibsonGuy User Info... | Hey...Ive just recently bought a 79 MIJ Greco Les Paul Custom, what some would consider a lawsuit for its time, and judging by the pic you have posted I may have some doubts if yours was made there. I did alot of research before buying mine and there are some details with yours that would make me believe its probably Korean or Chinese. First off, does yours have the words made in Japan stamped in the headstock, or is it just a sticker? If its stamped then youre probably ok. If theres no name at all on the headstock, that may be another clue it maybe Korean or Chinese. Most lawsuit guitars that Ive seen have the makers name on the headstock, usually Greco, Tokai and Ibanez are the main ones. By the looks of your truss rod cover it has 3 screws rather than the 2 like Gibson uses, again something a lawsuit MIJ guitar would have. The Japanese were sticklers for details on these things and wouldnt overlook something like that. A few other things Ive read on the internet that one would look for would be if it has a short or long neck tenon, with the longer being more than likely the MIJ. If the pickups are original check the wire they use, if its braided than it usually indicates it was probably MIJ just because of better quality. Im not claiming to be an expert on lawsuit guitars, just the research Ive done before I bought mine. If yours has one or more things that Ive mentioned than you may have either or Korean or Chinese model, and not to say theres anything wrong with that, because it could sound and feel every bit as good as a Japanese or USA guitar, and at the end of the day thats all that really matters. Do some research of your own you'll find it quite interesting, hope this helps...cheers - Thu, 5 Jun 2008 3:25am
GibsonGuy User Info... | Sorry one more thing...judging by the looks of the tuners if they are original than it may not be MIJ. Of the lawsuit Les Pauls Ive seen theyve all used either the Kluson style green key, or gold/silver tulip style tuners. The ones on yours dont look at all like soemthing that would be on a MIJ Les Paul, I might be wrong but just one more thing you might want to look at, cheers - Thu, 5 Jun 2008 3:35am
