| Curious George | Actually, unlike bandFEST and the M*POWERS, NMW is a pretty cool event. Sure there's the bullshit industry stuff, like, on one afternoon, they fill the Commodore with a bunch of A&R guys. They all sit at little desks, and you walk around like a tool handing press kit after press kit to these guys, who say thank you, hand out some standard line about how "it takes a lot of individual promotion to get a band signed nowadays." Then he chucks your kit into a big cardboard box which prompty gets deposited in the dumpster on the way out. BUT, they hook your band up with a show at a decent-to-awesome venue in Vancouver, and you get a chance to play in a city that you may or may not have had a chance to play in before. A couple years back, my band first broke into Vancouver through New Music West. The booker of the club we played in, also booked for 6 other bars in Van. | Ty Stranglehold User Info... | I used to go to NMW without fail from 95-98, but each year it seemed to be less about unsigned bands and more about seminars on how major labels can make more money. I've heard that they're trying to change that. Let's hope. - Sun, 13 Apr 2003 11:43pm | ||
