Bounce User Info... | So I’m taking a solo road trip to Cali in a few weeks, driving from Victoria, Map quest says it takes 21 hours to drive straight to Las Angeles, I call bullshit! Anyone drove there lately? Know how long it really takes? Have any suggestions on where I should stop along the way? - Wed, 7 May 2008 11:42am
evilkleg User Info... | Hey Spring, It's Craig here. I just did that exact trip two months ago and you're right- 21 hrs is BS. There is no way you can do it that fast. It took me 26 hrs over 2 1/2 days on the I5 averaging between 120 and 150 kph. And that figure doesn't count rest breaks/food/gas. Also, I slept at rest stops along the way which is not necessarily the best idea for a woman travelling alone (probably wasn't that great an idea for me but I had to make it down for a wedding and I lost a day because my car broke down). One thing I didn't realize is that it takes as long or longer to drive the length of Cali than it does to drive through Wash. and Oregon combined. So factor that in. Drive the coast (HWY 1) if you have time because it really is beautiful but it takes WAY longer. HWY 101 is like a combo of HWY 1 and I5- not as pretty as the coast hwy, but way nicer than I5. Faster than the coast, but slower than I5. If you want to know more, give me a call if you still have my number or email evilkleg~at~yahoo.com Good luck. - Wed, 7 May 2008 2:36pm
trevor corey User Info... | Drive down through Washington's highway 30 to the bridge that crosses over the Columbia river mouth to Astoria, then down highway 101 along the coast . There are many beach front towns along the way in Oregon and north California well worth stopping and camping in their State parks. Lincoln City, Newport, Nehalem Bay, and Florence all have good restaurants and lodging. Check out the dunes, and state park in Florence, Oregon, and the Redwood forests in Humboldt county, California. I've driven straight through to Sacramento in 18 hours, on the I-5, but that is boring. - Wed, 7 May 2008 2:49pm
Bounce User Info... | Thanks guys! ...Yeah the rest stop thing kind of freaks me out, and stopping for gas in unfamiliar places. But still all a part of the adventure! I have 10 days of travel time so I think I might do the coastal drive! - Wed, 7 May 2008 3:46pm
KRYWY User Info... | If your goal is to enjoy the scenery definately go along the Washington coast. But if your goal is to spend as much time as possible on the beaches of LA go on I-5. Last time I went I left first thing in the morning and made it Yreka, CA (roughly 12 hours of driving) and got a Motel 6. Then the next day I made it to Bakersfield and was in LA by the next afternoon. Just writing this makes me want to go back and surf at Huntington Beach. - Wed, 7 May 2008 9:49pm
