No - it's the people who LIKE reggae is what the problem is. As far as this chronic ganga dude is concerned - if reggae were an actual physical, living being (human, for instance), I would arrange by royal decree to have reggae suspended upside down by piano wire and have molten glass poured down his/her rectum.

It's just incredibly fucking boring, sleep-inducing and repetitive AS FUCKING SHIT, that's all. No big deal. I'll betcha THE MAJORITY - not all, but the majority - of most white folks get into reggae simply because they think they're being pc by supporting some form of ethnic music. Racist? DUH, fuck no - just simply calling it like it is.
Right?
Yeah - right - I thought so.
Also - has there EVER been a reggae song that has NOT begun with some snappy little fill on the timbales? - Sun, 20 Apr 2008 7:59am

I went through a reggae phase when I was about 13. It lasted about a month after I realized that there were precious few good songwriters like Bob Marley in the genre to sustain it.
Its like every genre where there's good stuff and then a whole slew of poorly done, repetitive, derivative imitators. But I think reggae enjoys WAAAAAAY more than its share of lazy, souless, crap performers that way. - Sun, 20 Apr 2008 4:42pm

Reggae has certainly had its influence on western music (Sly and Robbie came from reggae to become two of the most influential club producers of the eighties), but then so has Cajon, Latin, Gamelan, Polka, etc., etc., none of which I personally choose to listen to for any length of time, although I have listened to all of them (and others) in my search for a musical voice. (I've even jammed on some of them too.)

(It is kinda cool though when one of your favourite artists does a 'tip of the hat' to some of their influences.) - Sun, 20 Apr 2008 5:24pm

IMO ska, reggae, and dub all suck. I even played in a band that had a heavy ska influence for 6 years. It took me awhile to understand the whole vibe of it. I found it helped if I smoked a ton of weed, got really stoned, then ate a pot cookie and took some sedatives. Sometimes I would just stand onstage and drink. Nobody seemed to notice. I got paid the same no matter what I did... But I'm a guitarist and holding a barre chord and doing upstrokes on the 2 and 4 gets pretty boring after about 30 seconds. Then again, more people probably hate heavy metal (which is what I do these days) than reggae. At least it is more challenging to play and lets me vent my aggression in a possitive way. - Sun, 20 Apr 2008 5:41pm

Reggae doesn't necessarily suck, it's just sucked since about 1980. If all you know of reggae is Bob Marley and whit boys covering Bob Marley, you should think it sucks, but you would be mistaken.

Before anyone can weigh in with any authority on the value of reggae, they should at very least watch the movie Rockers.

I find I can groove to it for bout' 3 or 4 songs, then get quite bored. That being said I have a soft spot for Bob Marley and the Wailers. One of the first records I listened to as youngster was Legend. Still great. - Sun, 20 Apr 2008 7:43pm Edited: Sun, 20 Apr 2008 7:44pm

"I'm jammin', I'm jammin', I feel like jammin' with you." Singing about jamming is like drawing a picture of a pencil and paper or writing a book about being an author. Seems really short ranged on the imagination to me. I used to work with a bob marley fanatic and like so many other reggae nuts he worshiped the bugger. Listening to him 8 hrs. a shift, reading bob marley books and looking at the bob marley slide show on his lap top that was running the bm mp3's. At least unlike most reggae types I met he wasn't a soapophobe. But really, the music all together has half as much intelligence as a Raffi record. - Mon, 21 Apr 2008 8:30am
