I lost my BOSS BD-2 Blues Driver so I'm looking to buy a new pedal to get a little bit of bite out of the clean channel of my Fender Blues Deluxe.

I'm heading down to Long and Mcquade to try out a Tube Screamer and maybe some other pedals. Any suggestions for a nice bluesy tone? - Sat, 29 Mar 2008 12:52pm

I use a TS-5, this shittiest of the tube screamers and I love it with my JCM800. There are also lots of mods out there to mod any tube screamer to be the holy grail TS-808. Overall I think the general consensus is that the TS-808 is the best, closely followed by the TS-9. - Thu, 3 Apr 2008 1:34pm

Boss SD-1 is better than any tube screamer, just keep the drive down to zero, the tone at half way, and the level maxed. This will help push the tubes and give em a bite when used as a volume boost. - Sun, 20 Apr 2008 4:45pm

I tried a few TS's out and decided on the MAXON one as having the best sound.. they actually invented the classic TS I think, and it was copied by Ibanez. - Tue, 6 May 2008 11:43am

More than you ever wanted to learn about Tube Screamers can be found here:

and here:

I have 2 TS-9 pedals and both were made by Maxon for Ibanez (one original, one reissue). The SD-1 is pretty much the same circuit as a TS-9 but with an added clipping diode (more harmonics) and can be had for much cheaper if cash is tight. - Wed, 21 May 2008 3:15pm Edited: Wed, 21 May 2008 3:16pm

IMHO the best pedal for distortion or overdrive that I've ever used is the PROCO RAT.

you could also spend a few more bucks and get a deucetone which is basically two rats in one pedal.

other than that, I have a korg(believe it or not) PME 40X which is a modular effects unit from the 70's and pretty much impossible to get currently, which I really like.

I've tried several tube screamers and for me,, they were certainly not the holy grail of OD pedals. I use a soldano and don't use a pedal for overdrive any more.

good luck with your search!! - Fri, 23 May 2008 2:49pm
