| Anonymous | ok. emo. has anyone of you heard of few bands that started in d.c. in the mid eighties. rites of spring, embrace, fugazi, dag nasty..those are the ones who are responsible for the birth of emo. a common characteristic of emo music is quiet verse to loud chorus. think of nirvana and smells like teen spirit..quite verse-loud chorus, limp biscuit...same deal..nickleback...and so on and so forth. when people go on about how much something like "emo" sucks and have no idea what it's even about it's a little frustrating,it's kinda like someone saying that the beattles suck and have no clue what they've done for modern music. - Thu, 27 Feb 2003 6:12pm | ||

I don't pretend to be an expert on hardcore -- that should be completely obvious from my use of pre-rap Beastie Boys as an example, instead of, I dunno, a "hardcore" hardcore band.... Beastie Boys were hardcore... They happen to be one of the few old-school New York hardcore bands I've _heard_ of, and certainly the only one I listen to.... I've heard enough old-school hardcore to know I ejoy it... Therefore, I'm justified in saying that I think old-school hardcore is cool shit... As for the emo thing, is it not true that emo came out of the hardcore scene when the punks got tired of being loud and angry all the time? I mean, I may be wrong, but that's how I've heard it explained..... The way I heard it, early emo was early-mid 80s thingy that formed in/from the hardcore scene..... So, if I don't have my facts straight, I would welcome straight facts, if you can provide them.... | josh User Info... | does anybody else tire of this stupid little battle between the 'hardcore' and 'emo' kids? it's sad, i haven't seen such ignorance since highschool. but at least there it was all the 'different' kids against the mainstream. i got tired of being called emo and punk (one and the same? does it matter?) so i graduated. what the fuck does it matter that i dress differently from you? or play different music than you? if you don't like it then fuck off. if you're going to put the time into disliking someone do it for a reason. dislike THAT 'emo' kid 'cause he never stops whining about his girlfriend. dislike THAT 'hardcore' kid cause he never stops whining about emo kids. dislike people because they're not as intelligent as you are. not because they look different, or like different music. there is a lot of shitty music within each genre, and a lot of good. you shouldn't judge somebody by the style of music they like, but instead judge them based on the overall intelligence/integrity (or pure entertainment value) of the music they listen to within their preferred genre. in short, learn to differentiate between authenticity and shite, THEN pass your judgements. - Thu, 6 Mar 2003 5:13pm | ||
